Results with collagen injection into the vocal folds for medialization.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review outlines the indications, surgical techniques and follow-up, with results, for current collagen use. RECENT FINDINGS: Micronized AlloDerm (Cymetra) is a presently available injectable substance made from human collagen and elastin particles. A mean follow-up of 8-10.5 months showed lasting results after injection for vocal fold immobility. Collagen injection is one possible method for treating a vocal fold scar - or sulcus -vergeture by medialization of one or both of the scarred vocal folds. Collagen injection laryngoplasty is presently the treatment of choice

On the influence of laryngeal pathologies on acoustic and electroglottographic jitter measures.

This study compared acoustic and electroglottographic (EGG) jitter from [a] vowels of 103 dysphonic speakers. The EGG recordings were chosen according to their intensity, signal-to-noise ratio, and percentage of unvoiced intervals, while acoustic signals were selected based on voicing detection and the reliability of jitter extraction. The agreement between jitter measures was expressed numerically as a normalized difference. In 63.1% (65/103) of the cases the differences fell within +/-22.5%. Positive differences above +22.5% were associated with increased acoustic jitter and occurred in 12.6

Dynamic extremes of voice in the light of time domain parameters extracted from the amplitude features of glottal flow and its derivative.

In the first part of the study, the subjects (4 females, 4 males) produced sustained breathy, normal and pressed types of phonation. The maximum AC flow (f(ac)) and the negative peak amplitude (d(min)) of the first derivative of the glottal flow were extracted from glottal volume velocity waveforms estimated by inverse filtering. The ratio between f(ac) and d(min) (amplitude quotient, AQ), which gives an estimate of the closing time of the glottal flow, and its normalised version (NAQ) were computed. The NAQ values correlated strongly with the closing quotient of glottal flow. In the second pa

The effect of perceptual training on ability to use the Vocal Profile Analysis Scheme.

The Vocal Profile Analysis Scheme (VPAS) (Laver et al. 1981) is the vocal perceptual scheme most often used by British speech and language therapists. In this study, the voices of four speakers with normal voices and four with a voice disorder were recorded in reading and independently rated on the VPAS protocol by Dr Sheila Wirz and by the author. Inter-judge reliability was established and agreement reached in judging the twenty vocal quality features for each speaker. Thirty eight speech and language therapists were assessed on their ability to describe the voices. Significant improvement w

Some effects of deafness on the generation of voice.

Glottal volume-velocity waveform data were collected from twenty male and female hearing-impaired adolescents by means of a reflectionless tube. The subjects each provided samples of phonation in normal- and soft-voice modes and in a three-syllable word with primary stress on the medial syllable. Analysis of the data, in comparison with characteristics of phonation produced by normally hearing subjects, indicates that deafness affects primarily the time-varying characteristics of the glottal source. Among the hearing-impaired subjects, the following abnormalities were noted; diplophonia and cr

Changes of some functional speech disorders after surgical correction of skeletal anterior open bite.

Skeletal anterior open bite (AOB) or apertognathism is characterized by the absence of contact of the anterior teeth and affects articulation parameters, chewing, biting and voice quality. The treatment of AOB consists of orthognatic surgical procedures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of treatment on voice quality, articulation and nasality in speech with respect to skeletal changes. The study was prospective; 15 patients with AOB were evaluated before and after surgery. Lateral cephalometric x-ray parameters (facial angle, interincisal distance, Wits appraisal) were measure…

Voice Rehabilitation After Early Laryngeal Cancer: A Narrative Review.

OBJECTIVES: Early-stage laryngeal cancer, particularly glottic carcinoma, is commonly treated with radiotherapy or transoral CO₂ laser microsurgery. Although these treatments offer favorable oncologic control, voice impairment often persists as a long-term functional concern, affecting quality of life and communication. Voice therapy has been proposed as a rehabilitative intervention to address these voice limitations; however, no standardized protocol currently exists. This narrative review aims to synthesize and critically evaluate the available evidence on voice therapy techniques employed

Associations between the Transsexual Voice Questionnaire (TVQMtF ) and self-report of voice femininity and acoustic voice measures.

BACKGROUND: The Transsexual Voice Questionnaire (TVQMtF ) was designed to capture the voice-related perceptions of individuals whose gender identity as female is the opposite of their birth-assigned gender (MtF women). Evaluation of the psychometric properties of the TVQMtF is ongoing. AIMS: To investigate associations between TVQMtF scores and (1) self-perceptions of voice femininity and (2) acoustic parameters of voice pitch and voice quality in order to evaluate further the validity of the TVQMtF . A strong correlation between TVQMtF scores and self-ratings of voice femininity was predicte…

Alaryngeal Speech Enhancement for Noisy Environments Using a Pareto Denoising Gated LSTM.

Loss of the larynx significantly alters natural voice production, requiring alternative communication modalities and rehabilitation methods to restore speech intelligibility and improve the quality of life of affected individuals. This paper explores advances in alaryngeal speech enhancement to improve signal quality and reduce background noise, focusing on individuals who have undergone laryngectomy. In this study, speech samples were obtained from 23 Lithuanian males who had undergone laryngectomy with secondary implantation of the tracheoesophageal prosthesis (TEP). Pareto-optimized gated l

Treatment Efficacy for Functional Voice Disorders with Dysphonia: A Network Meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Functional voice disorders are the most common laryngeal disorder, occurring as primary disorders or secondary to organic causes, and are typically managed with voice therapy. Frequently, dysphonia (abnormal overall voice quality) is present as a main symptom. Expert perceptual ratings are considered the gold standard for evaluation. Multiple voice therapy approaches exist, but there is no comprehensive evidence to rank their efficacy. DESIGN: Our study design was a systematic review and network meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE, CENTRAL, Scopus, and Web of Science databases a…

Assessing the Effectiveness of Voice Therapy Techniques in Treating Dysphonia: An Otolaryngological Review.

Dysphonia is a prevalent condition that can impact individuals across all age groups. It occurs when normal voice quality is altered, caused by structural and/or functional issues. Evaluation and assessment from clinicians are warranted if dysphonia persists for more than four weeks and/or is coupled with risk factors or other concerning clinical manifestations. Additionally, voice disorders can increase the risk of depression and anxiety disorders, as well as raise stress levels and lower self-reported health indicators. Dysphonia can have a substantial influence on interpersonal interactions…

Although resonant voice therapy is a widely used therapeutic approach, little is known about what characterizes resonant voice and how it is … oductions and that the degree of harmonic enhancement in the range of 2.0 to 3.5 kHz was related to voice quality: nonresonant voice had the least amount of energy in this range, whereas a resonant-relaxed voice had more energy, and a resonant-bright voice had the greatest amount of energy. Visual-perceptual judgments of the videoendoscopic data indicated that …

Establishing validity of the Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V).

PURPOSE: The Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V) was developed to provide a protocol and form for clinicians to use when assessing the voice quality of adults with voice disorders (Kempster, Gerratt, Verdolini Abbott, Barkmeier-Kramer, & Hillman, 2009). This study examined the reliability and the empirical validity of the CAPE-V when used by experienced voice clinicians judging normal and disordered voices. METHOD: The validity of the CAPE-V was examined in 2 ways. First, we compared judgments made by 21 raters of 22 normal and 37 disordered voices using the CAPE-V and …

Voice reduction in cardiac auscultation sounds with reference signals measured from vocal resonators.

This study proposes the use of vocal resonators to enhance cardiac auscultation signals and evaluates their performance for voice-noise suppression. Data were collected using two electronic stethoscopes while each study subject was talking. One collected auscultation signal from the chest while the other collected voice signals from one of the three voice resonators (cheek, back of the neck, and shoulder). The spectral subtraction method was applied to the signals. Both objective and subjective metrics were used to evaluate the quality of enhanced signals and to investigate the most effective
