A Methodological Approach for Exposure Assessment Studies in Residences Using Volatile Organic-Compound-Contaminated Water.

This paper presents a methodological approach for assessing total exposures to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in residences using contaminated water supplies. This approach is founded on assessment of ingestion, inhalation, and dermal exposures; both long-term (i.e., 12 to 24 hr) lowlevel exposures and short-term (i.e., =10 min) high-level exposures are considered. The methodology is based on the collection of water samples to establish the identity of the contaminants, maximum source terms, and possible dermal and ingestion exposures; integrated whole-air samples are collected to assess lo…

Volatile Organic Compound Emissions and Human Odor Perception of Dental 3D-Printing Photopolymer Resins.

The increasing use of photopolymer resins in dental three-dimensional (3D) printing has raised concerns regarding occupational exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This study aimed to characterize and compare formaldehyde (HCHO) and total volatile organic compound (TVOC) emission profiles of five commercially available dental 3D-printing resins and to explore their relationship with subjective odor perception. Subjective odor perception was assessed during routine educational laboratory activities using a numerical rating scale (0-10). Time-resolved HCHO and TVOC measurements were su…

Dual biotic stressors shape volatile organic compound emission patterns in pome fruit trees.

Plants release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as part of their defense mechanisms when attacked by phytopathogens and herbivores. These specific volatile emissions can help plants avoid damage. In this study, we investigated the effects of the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), Halyomorpha halys, and the phytopathogens "Candidatus phytoplasma mali", causing apple proliferation (AP) or "Ca. P. pyri", causing pear decline (PD) on the volatile emissions from apple (Malus domestica) or pear (Pyrus communis) trees. We analyzed VOCs emitted by uninfected and infected trees exposed to male and fem…

Using Machine Learning to Overcome Interfering Oxygen Effects in a Graphene Volatile Organic Compound Sensor.

Discriminating between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for applications including disease diagnosis and environmental monitoring, is often complicated by the presence of interfering compounds such as oxygen. Graphene sensors are effective at detecting VOCs; however, they are also known to be highly sensitive to oxygen. Therefore, the combined effects of each of these gases on graphene sensors must be understood. In this work, we use graphene variable capacitor (varactor) sensors to examine the cross-selectivity of oxygen at 3 concentrations and 3 VOCs (ethanol, methanol, and methyl ethyl ket…

Association of volatile organic compound levels with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases in NHANES 2013-2016.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) represent a significant component of air pollution. However, studies evaluating the impact of VOC exposure on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have predominantly focused on single pollutant models. This study aims to comprehensively assess the relationship between multiple VOC exposures and COPD. A large cross-sectional study was conducted on 4983 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Four models, including weighted logistic regression, restricted cubic splines (RCS), weighted quantile sum regression (WQS), and the…

Profiles of ambient semi- and intermediate- volatility organic compounds (S/IVOCs) in winter of urban Chengdu.

Semi-volatile/intermediate-volatility organic compounds (S/IVOCs) are considered to be missing precursors of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). In this study, ambient S/IVOCs were collected in the winter of Chengdu and were analyzed by a thermal desorption-comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-quadrupole mass spectrometer (TD-GC×GC-qMS). Molecular characteristics and volatility-polarity distributions of the S/IVOCs were specified. A total of 351 compounds were quantified with S/IVOCs concentration of 2.63 ± 1.25 μg m-3 in gas phase and 1.83 ± 1.15 μg m-3 in particle phase. The volatil

Database of emission factors of volatile organic compound (VOC) species in motor vehicle exhaust in China.

The synergistic strategy for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and O3 pollution prevention and control has emerged as a pivotal approach in combating air pollution. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) serve as crucial precursors to both O3 and secondary organic aerosols (SOAs), with motor vehicles representing one of their significant sources. In this study, a standard for establishing a database of VOC species emission factors for motor vehicles was developed, and a database containing 134 VOC species was constructed through field tests and literature surveys. The VOC emissions of light-duty gaso…

Diurnal variability in urinary volatile organic compound metabolites and its association with oxidative stress biomarkers.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are ubiquitous environmental pollutants that are associated with birth defects, leukemia, neurocognitive deficits, reproductive impairment and cancer in humans exposed to these compounds. Exposure to VOCs can be assessed by measuring their metabolites in urine. Little is known, however, about the temporal variability in urinary VOC metabolite (VOCM) concentrations within- and between-individuals. In this study, we determined the variability in the concentrations of 38 VOCMs in urine samples collected from 19 healthy individuals across a period of 44 days. We a…

Feasibility of volatile organic compound in breath analysis in the follow-up of colorectal cancer: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) has a worldwide incidence of 1.4 million patients and a large share in cancer-related mortality. After curative treatment, the risk of recurrence is 30-65%. Early detection may result in curative treatment. However, current follow-up (FU) examinations have low sensitivity ranging from 49 to 85% and are associated with high costs. Therefore, the search for a new diagnostic tool is justified. Analysis of volatile organic compound in exhaled air through an electronic nose (eNose) is a promising new patient-friendly diagnostic tool. We studied whether the eNo

Fecal microbiome and volatile organic compound metabolome in obese humans with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The histopathology of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is similar to that of alcoholic liver disease. Colonic bacteria are a source of many metabolic products, including ethanol and other volatile organic compounds (VOC) that may have toxic effects on the human host after intestinal absorption and delivery to the liver via the portal vein. Recent data suggest that the composition of the gut microbiota in obese human beings is different from that of healthy-weight individuals. The aim of this study was to compare the colonic microbiome and VOC metabolome of obese NAFL…

A simple and portable vacuum assisted headspace solid phase microextraction device coupled to gas chromatography based on covalent organic framework/metal organic framework hybrid for simultaneous analysis of volatile and semi-volatile compounds in soil.

Various microextraction methods have demonstrated a positive effect when assisted by vacuum. However, working with such systems is often laborious, they often require expensive and non-portable vacuum pumps, and may even suck off some sample vapor or solid particles during the evacuation process. To address these issues, a simple, and affordable vacuum-assisted headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) device was developed in this study. The device, named In Syringe Vacuum-assisted HS-SPME (ISV-HS-SPME), utilizes an adjustable 40 mL glass syringe as a vacuum provider and sampling vessel.

Classification of Volatile Organic Compounds Using a Novel High-Frequency Quartz Crystal Microbalance Sensor Array Based on Ethyl Cellulose Microstructures.

Detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is essential because they affect air quality and can serve as biomarkers for non-invasive early disease detection. VOCs can be identified using electronic noses combining cross-reactive sensors, pattern recognition, and classification algorithms. Here, a single-polymer 12-sensor array based on 30 MHz quartz crystal microbalances was developed using three ethyl cellulose (EC) microstructures: casting films (CFs), anti-solvent microparticles (ASMs), and electrospray microparticles (ESMs). The array detected ethanol, ethyl acetate, and heptane at ppm co…

A portable fast gas chromatography-mass spectrometry workflow for quantification of biogenic volatile organic compounds with humidity‑dependent sensitivity correction.

Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) regulate key atmospheric and ecological processes but remain challenging to quantify in the field due to reactivity, mixture complexity, and variable ambient humidity. A portable fast Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) workflow was developed, coupling needle-trap (NT) sampling with a compact GC-MS system to enable BVOC quantification with minimal logistics. A 15-compound gas standard (28-91 µmol mol⁻¹) was generated under controlled water vapor pressures (ea = 0.7-2.3 kPa), and two independent calibrations sessions were performed to assess …

Measurement of Stable Carbon Isotope Ratio of Volatile Organic Compounds Using Thermal Desorption-Gas Chromatography-Combustion-Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry.

This paper presents a method combining a thermal desorption (TD) unit with gas chromatography-combustion-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-C-IRMS) to determine compound specific δ13C values of seven VOCs (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m/p-xylene, o-Xylene, styrene, and cumene). The main innovation lies in the systematic validation of TD-GC-C-IRMS for atmospheric VOC analysis, which enables reliable δ13C determination with minimal isotopic bias. The optimal TD conditions were 300°C and 5 min. Advantages include high precision (SD ≤ 0.4‰), good reproducibility, long-term sample stability (up
