Severity of obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome and subsequent waking EEG spectral power.

It is well known that most patients with obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome (OSAHS) suffer sleepiness, although the underlying mechanisms of this relationship remain unclear. The present study examined the relationship between nocturnal variables and the subsequent waking electroencephalogram (EEG), in order to determine if sleepiness was related to OSAHS severity and due to sleep fragmentation or to nocturnal hypoxaemia. In total, 12 moderate-to-severe OSAHS patients underwent a total sleep night followed by a 24-h period of sustained wakefulness where the waking EEG was measured eve…

Time to wake-up: sleep problems and daytime sleepiness in long-term stroke survivors.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In work with chronic stroke patients the authors observed that patients frequently appear sleepy and often comment on their poor sleep. Sleep difficulties are frequently reported and indeed clinically recognized in the acute phase post-stroke, but little is known about the sleep and daytime sleepiness of chronic stroke patients with sustained disabilities. The latter, however, deserves clarification because sleep is a critical modulator of health, daytime performance and wellbeing. The present study therefore explored the sleep and sleepiness in a chronic stroke populat

Autonomic changes during wake-sleep transition: a heart rate variability based approach.

Autonomic function during sleep and wakefulness has been extensively investigated, however information concerning autonomic changes during the wake to sleep transition is scarce. The objective of the present study was to non-invasively characterize autonomic function and additional physiologic changes during sleep onset in normal and abnormal sleep. The estimation of autonomic function was based on time-frequency analysis of the RR interval series, using the power components in the very-low-frequency range (0.005-0.04 Hz), low-frequency (0.04-0.15 Hz), and high-frequency range (0.15-0.5 Hz). T…

Sleep-wake habits and disorders in a series of 100 adult epilepsy patients--a prospective study.

The aim of the study was to assess sleep-wake habits and disorders and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in an unselected outpatient epilepsy population. Sleep-wake habits and presence of sleep disorders were assessed by means of a clinical interview and a standard questionnaire in 100 consecutive patients with epilepsy and 90 controls. The questionnaire includes three validated instruments: the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) for EDS, SA-SDQ for sleep apnea (SA), and the Ullanlinna Narcolepsy Scale (UNS) for narcolepsy. Sleep complaints were reported by 30% of epilepsy patients compared to 10

Differential effect of sleep-wake states on lingual and dorsal neck muscle activity in rats.

Postural tone is reduced during slow-wave sleep (SWS) and absent during rapid eye movement sleep (REMS). In obstructive sleep apnea subjects … during REMS. In contrast, the mean lingual EMG during SWS was only 5.9+/-1.6% (S.E.) of its mean in wakefulness, and during REMS, it increased to 46+/-15% (S.E.) (p<0.03) due to the appearance of phasic bursts, the intensity of which progressively increased. The lingual and nuchal activities also had different time courses during state transitions. In obstruc …

Sleep-wake cycling on amplitude-integrated electroencephalography in term newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) study was to evaluate the influence of perinatal hypoxia-ischemia on sleep-wake cycling (SWC) in term newborns and assess whether characteristics of SWC are of predictive value for neurodevelopmental outcome. METHODS: From a consecutive series of newborns born during a 10-year period, the aEEG tracings of 171 term newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy were assessed for the presence, time of onset, and quality of SWC. SWC patterns were categorized with regard to the background pattern on which they pres

Within-breath control of genioglossal muscle activation in humans: effect of sleep-wake state.

Pharyngeal dilator muscles are clearly important in the pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome. Substantial data support the role of a local negative pressure reflex in modifying genioglossal activation across inspiration during wakefulness. Using a model of passive negative pressure ventilation, we have previously reported a tight relationship between varying intrapharyngeal negative pressures and genioglossal muscle activation (GGEMG) during wakefulness. In this study, we used this model to examine the slope of the relationship between epiglottic pressure (Pepi) and GGEMG, during …

Sleep-wake pattern of medical students: early versus late class starting time.

The sleep-wake cycle of students is characterized by delayed onset, partial sleep deprivation and poor sleep quality. Like other circadian rhythms, the sleep-wake cycle is influenced by endogenous and environmental factors. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of different class starting times on the sleep-wake pattern of 27 medical students. The data were collected during two medical school semesters having different class starting times. All subjects answered the Portuguese version of the Horne and Ostberg Morningness/Eveningness Questionnaire, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quali

Sleep-waking discharge patterns of neurons recorded in the rat perifornical lateral hypothalamic area.

The perifornical lateral hypothalamic area (PF-LHA) has been implicated in the control of several waking behaviours, including feeding, motor activity and arousal. Several cell types are located in the PF-LHA, including projection neurons that contain the hypocretin peptides (also known as orexins). Recent findings suggest that hypocretin neurons are involved in sleep-wake regulation. Loss of hypocretin neurons in the human disorder narcolepsy is associated with excessive somnolence, cataplexy and increased propensity for rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. However, the relationship of PF-LHA neur

The sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome depresses waking vagal tone independent of sympathetic activation.

The modest daytime hypertension and sympathetic upregulation associated with the sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome (SAHS), does not explain the relatively large increased risk of cardiac morbidity and mortality in the SAHS patients population. Therefore, efferent vagal and sympathetic activity was evaluated during wakefulness in SAHS subjects and matched healthy controls, in order to determine if vagal downregulation may play a role in the aetiology of cardiac disease in the SAHS. The awake autonomic nervous system function of 15 male subjects, with mild-to-moderate SAHS was compared to that of …

Time-related changes in the sleep-wake cycle of rats infected with Trypanosoma brucei brucei.

Patients with human African trypanosomiasis, sleeping sickness, show a major disturbance in the circadian distribution of sleeping and waking, with sleep and wake episodes equally distributed throughout the nycthemeron. In order to develop an animal model, polysomnography was taken continuously in 8 male OFA rats in a 12:12 h light-dark cycle, during 1 baseline week and for 2 weeks after infection with Trypanosoma brucei brucei. Considerable sleep fragmentation was observed in the infected rats, with numerous sleep-wake stage changes and an increased number of wakefulness and slow-wave sleep p…

Sleep-wake patterns of intact and carotid sinus nerve sectioned rats during hypoxia.

Six male rats breathed 21 an 10% O2 before and after carotid sinus nerve (CSN) section. Polygraphic recording techniques were used to monitor sleep and wakefulness. The effects that these gas mixtures had on the rats' sleep-wake pattern (SWP) were studied. The SWP of CSN sectioned rats breathing 21% O2 was unchanged compared with that of intact rats. While breathing 10% O2, the intact rats' SWP was altered dramatically. Paradoxical sleep (PS) was absent on the first day's exposure to hypoxia. After CSN section, the SWP approximated that of rats in normoxic conditions. The amount of PS increase…

Long-term ambulatory temperature monitoring in a subject with a hypernychthemeral sleep--wake cycle disturbance.

A portable temperature data logger was used for prolonged rectal temperature monitoring in an ambulatory subject with a longer than 24 hr (hypernychthemeral) sleep-wake cycle. The mean period of the sleep-wake and circadian temperature cycles was 24.8 hr. However, the period of the sleep-wake cycle fluctuated considerably, being less than 24.8 hr when he slept during the socially desirable sleep hours and more than 24.8 hr when he slept during the day. In the first instance, the daily temperature fall occurred later than, and in the second earlier than, sleep onset. During the times of desynch

Wake Up and Smell the Infected Bees: Volatile Cues of Vairimorpha Infection in Honey Bees.

Infection can alter volatile organic compounds (VOCs) across a wide range of taxa, but the effects in adult honey bees remain unexplored. Adult workers are major contributors to colony odour and play a central role in both pathogen transmission and collective disease defence (social immunity). We characterised VOC emissions from Vairimorpha-infected and uninfected worker honey bees over a 14-day infection time series using dynamic headspace sampling and two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC × GC-MS). Vairimorpha spp. are globally important gut parasites linked t
