Eruption of permanent teeth in Brazilian Whites and Blacks.

A total of 302 White and 904 Black children six, nine and 12 years of age were studied for the eruption of their permanent teeth. Differences between the two ethnic groups were not large, but the Black subjects were generally more precocious at the beginning of the process (especially the girls, both in the upper and lower incisors). At nine and 12 years of age, however, these dissimilarities disappear. The latter do not seem to be related to distinct rates of extraction or agenesis of deciduous teeth. No significant differences were observed in the degree of asymmetry present in the permanent…

The growth of the metacestodes of Taenia crassiceps in white mice.

The effect of the sex of the intermediate host on the growth and development of the metacestodes of Taenia crassiceps has been investigated. Three different strains of mice were used, the C R S, L A C A and C F L P strains and two strains of metacestode, the Toi and the E R S strains. The results show that matacestodes of T. crassiceps grow and multiply more rapidly in female than in male mice, although both sexes are equally susceptible to the infection. The origin of the parasite, i.e., from a rat or mouse host, affects the parasite growth.

Genetic abnormality of the visual pathways in a "white" tiger.

"White"tigers show an inherited reduction of pigment, produced by an autosomal recessive gene. The brain of one of these tigers shows an abnormality of the visual pathways similar to abnormalities that are associated with albinism in many other mammals. There is a close relationship between the reduced pigment formation, the pathway abnormality, and strabismus.

Heterogeneity of white-matter organization in the human brain.

White-matter, which contains the long-range axons connecting different brain regions, makes up nearly half the human brain, yet the three-dimensional organization of individual axons has not been characterized. While advances in diffusion MRI have enabled macroscopic mapping of major WM pathways1, these methods are unable to resolve individual axons: their trajectories, density, and relative orientations2. Here, we present a histological and imaging pipeline optimized for post-mortem human white-matter that shows the 3D trajectories of densely stained large (diameter greater than ~1 μm) projec…

Aerosols and hydrocarbons in the atmosphere of a white dwarf planet.

Most stars, including our Sun, will one day evolve into red giants and, subsequently, white dwarfs. Several planet candidates have recently been identified orbiting white dwarfs1-4, demonstrating that planets can survive the stellar post-main-sequence stage intact. Little is known about the atmospheric composition of post-main-sequence planets, with the most evolved transiting planets with atmospheric detections so far orbiting subgiants5,6. Here we report an atmospheric detection for the white dwarf planet WD 1856 b, achieved through transmission spectroscopy with the James Webb Space Telesco…
