An unusual case of lead snowstorm caused by fragmentation of buckshot.

This article reports the unusual radiographic findings of 2 cases of a shotgun shooting incident involving the homicide of a plant manager and the subsequent suicide of the assailant. Radiologic examination of wounds produced by the no. 00 copper-plated buckshot used in the incident revealed images with striking similarity to the lead snowstorm appearance generally associated with high-velocity, soft-point rifle bullets.

"I was raped by the broker on the first day of my arrival in the town." Exploring reasons for risky sexual behavior among sexually-active unmarried young female internal migrants in Ethiopia: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Studies revealed that internal migrants are one of the most vulnerable groups for poor sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information and services. Risky sexual behavior (RSB) is a threat to public health and might lead to serious health problems such as unintended pregnancy, abortion, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV/AIDS. The reported prevalence of RSB among young female internal migrants in Ethiopia was as high as 70.3%. This requires in-depth understanding of the underlying cause. So, this study aimed at exploring reasons for RSB among sexually-active

Horizontal hostility and verbal violence between nurses in the perinatal arena of health care.

The goal of this US study was to determine the frequency of horizontal violence in a perinatal service and its effect on patient outcomes. A 24-question survey instrument was completed online by 63 nurses. The results indicated that labour and delivery wards experience a higher frequency of horizontal violence than other units in the perinatal service. They also showed that the mother and baby unit demonstrates a higher frequency of recipient or victim behaviours. A relationship between horizontal violence and ineffective communication, as well as a relationship between horizontal violence and

Phase 1 (12-month recall) identified eligible assault cases (n = 372) and controls (n = 1,116), June 2004 to December 2005; phase 2 (case-control study; response, 78%) enabled identification of exposures through 1-month rec

"Making a homeless person even more homeless … it's a necessary evil": The health and safety complexities of service restrictions as perceived by emergency shelter staff.

Service restrictions involve people experiencing homelessness being banned from an emergency shelter in response to a violation of program policies. Their use can be a pathway into unsheltered homelessness and reliance on other institutional services. However, the prevalence of service restriction use and the perspectives of shelter staff toward the practice are unknown. Accordingly, this mixed methods study used a one-phase QUAL(quan) embedded design to examine the reasons for implementing service restrictions, as recorded by shelter staff in administrative data and their perceptions of the p

Association of prior depressive symptoms and suicide attempts with subsequent victimization: analysis of population-based data from the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey.

We investigated this in nationally representative data from the United Kingdom. METHODS: Data were from the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey 2007. Multivariable logistic regressions estimated association between (a) prior depressive symptoms, (b) prior depressive symptoms wi

Commentary: The devastating effects of ignoring child maltreatment in psychiatry--a commentary on Teicher and Samson 2016.

Despite the numerous studies over the past 30 years that have clarified the devastating effects of child maltreatment on mental and physical health, the role of trauma within the caregiving system remains unrecognized both in our diagnostic systems and in our dominant treatment paradigms. Research of people with histories of caregiver abuse and neglect consistently demonstrates problems with concentration, anger, panic, depression, food intake, drugs, and sleep, as well as decreased Heart RateVariability, higher levels of stress hormones, and reduced or impaired immune response.
