Stability-related studies on 17D yellow fever vaccine.

Yellow fever (YF) vaccine using the 17D strain of YF attenuated virus has been produced at the Institut Pasteur in Dakar since 1962. Until now, the stabilised YF had an expiry date of utilization of two years from the end of the lot control process under storage at +4 degrees C. We conducted a stability study to assess the three full year validity of this preparation, when correctly stored at +4 degrees C to optimise the conditions of production, storage and availability of such a vaccine. The activity of 19 consecutive batches of vaccines kept for three years at +4 degrees C was compared to t…

Urbanisation of yellow fever in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.

BACKGROUND: Reinvasion by Aedes aegypti of cities in the Americas poses a threat of urbanisation of yellow fever. After detection of yellow-fever infection in a resident of the city of Santa Cruz, Bolivia, in December, 1997, we investigated all subsequent suspected cases. METHODS: We introduced active surveillance of yellow fever in the Santa Cruz area. Hospitals and selected urban and rural health centres reported all suspected cases. Patients were serologically screened for yellow fever, dengue, hepatitis A and B, and leptospirosis. We collected clinical and epidemiological information from…

[Yellow fever vaccination as prophylaxis of herpes labialis].

At some vaccination centres, it seems to be a clinical observation, that there is a reduction in the number of attacks of herpes labialis following yellow fever vaccination. We therefore conducted a double blind, prospective, randomized study to evaluate the efficacy of yellow fever vaccination against recurrent herpes labialis. Twenty-four patients with culture proven herpes labialis were allocated to either yellow fever vaccination or placebo (saline), with 12 persons in each group. After vaccination/ placebo the patients were followed for one year. The patients returned a letter every other…

Imported yellow fever in a United States citizen.

The last imported case of yellow fever seen in this country was in 1924. We report a case of yellow fever acquired by an American tourist who visited the jungles of Brazil along the Rio Negro and Amazon Rivers. The patient died 6 days after hospital admission and 10 days after his first symptoms appeared. Yellow fever virus was recovered from clinical specimens, and the isolate was genetically similar to the E genotype IIB of South American yellow fever viruses. This patient's illness represents a case of vaccine-preventable death since he failed to be immunized with a recommended preexposure …

[Current situation of yellow fever in Latin America].

Yellow fever endemicity is currently stabilized in South America: an average of 115 cases has officially been notified each year since 25 years (between 12 and 304 annual cases). These figures are underevaluated but no epidemic has been observed since 1983. Only sporadic or limited grouped cases have been reported. All declared cases correspond to people who have been infected within sylvatic areas, mainly adult forestmen. Within the last years, the majority of cases have occurred in Peru and Bolivia; the other cases have been observed in Brazil, in Columbia, in Ecuador and in French Guiana (i…

Urban yellow fever epidemic in western Nigeria, 1987.

A large epidemic of urban yellow fever occurred in April and May 1987 in Oyo State, western Nigeria. The principal vector was Aedes aegypti, breeding in domestic water containers. The 1987 outbreak followed an epidemic of sylvatic yellow fever in eastern Nigeria the previous year, and probably resulted from introduction of the virus by viraemic travellers. The outbreak in Oyo State ended in early July, by which time 805 cases and 416 deaths had been officially notified. However, surveys of 3 villages in the epicentre, a region with over 4 million inhabitants, indicated an infection rate of app…

Homogeneity among Senegalese strains of yellow fever virus.

A series of 16 yellow fever (YF) viruses isolated from mosquitoes, monkeys and humans in different epidemiological contexts in Senegal and The Gambia between 1976 and 1983, was analyzed by T1 RNase oligonucleotide fingerprints of the genomic 32P-labeled RNA, by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the intracellular virus-specified polypeptides, by peptide mapping of the envelope E glycoprotein and by immunological reactivities with monoclonal antibody fluids (MAF's) against the E glycoprotein. These strains had not been passed in suckling mice and were isolated in Aedes pseudoscutellaris …
