BACKGROUND: Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is an excessive immune activation syndrome. The genetic studies on every patient diagnosed with HLH recently became a standard of care. The likelihood of identifying a gene mutation is highest in the youngest patients.
RESULTS: Four HLH patients had changes in the following five genes: NLRP1 (c·923 G > A), DOCK 8 (Dedicator of Cytokinesis 8) (c·3067A > G), AIRE gene (c·10 G > A) and one in the RNASEH2B (c·649T > C), PSTPIP1 (c·1213C > T). No mutations in genes previously associated with HLH syndrome were found.

INTRODUCTION: Increased concentrations of tau protein are associated with medical conditions involving the central nervous system, such as Alzheimer's disease, traumatic brain injury and hypoxia. Diving, by way of an elevated ambient pressure, can affect the nervous system, however it is not known whether it causes a rise in tau protein levels in serum. Diets containing 20% of air-dried anaerobically digested Fort Collins sewage sludge were fed to broiler chicks. The diets were balanced in protein and had the same vitamin and mineral supplement. The sludge diets containing approximately 2,500 ME kcal/kg compared to 3,000 ME kcal/kg in the control feed. Birds gained less body weight on sludge diets and liver vitamin A levels were reduced. However, translocation of the organism to the peritoneal cavity can lead to peritonitis, intra-abdominal abscess formation, bacteremia, and sepsis. During translocation, B. fragilis is exposed to increased oxidative stress from the oxygenated tissues of the peritoneal cavity and the immune response. Occupational exposure by inhalation in copper smelter is associated with several subclinical health phenomena.
