Acetic acid induces cell death: an in vitro study using normal rat gastric mucosal cell line and rat and human gastric cancer and mesothelioma cell lines.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: We recently reported that topical application of acetic acid promptly caused tumor necrosis in a mouse model of gastric cancer. The aim of the present study was to examine whether acetic acid can directly induce cancer cell death. METHODS: Rat gastric epithelial cell line (RGM-1), rat gastric carcinoma cell line (RGK-1), human gastric cancer cell line (KATO III), and human mesothelioma cell lines (ACC-MESO1 and MSTO-211H) were used. Acetic acid was added into the cell culture at different concentrations for different time periods. Cell death was analyzed by MTT assay, flow…

Synthesis and biological evaluation of amide derivatives of (5,6-dimethoxy-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-yl)acetic acid as anti-inflammatory agents with reduced gastrointestinal ulcerogenecity.

A variety of amide derivatives of (5,6-dimethoxy-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-yl)acetic acid were synthesized and screened for their analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities. The compounds were found to have longer activity profile exceeding that of indomethacin in carrageenan-induced rat paw edema model. Few selected compounds were also screened for their antipyretic, anti-arthritic and ulcerogenecity potential. From these studies it can be concluded that these compounds though have significant antipyretic activity did not act through the inhibition of TNF-alpha. The test compounds failed to prev…

Dual efficacy of chromium (Cr) tolerant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) in conferring Cr tolerance to eggplant via improved growth and physiological aspects.

Chromium (Cr) contamination in agricultural soils, similar to other heavy metals (HMs), poses a serious threat to global food security. To mitigate its adverse effects, researchers are increasingly focusing on cost-effective and eco-friendly strategies, such as the use of Cr-tolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). The integration of these beneficial microbes with plant growth regulators (PGRs) like indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) offers a promising approach for reducing metal bioavailability and enhancing plant tolerance. Hence, we used a pre-isolated and pre-characterized Cr-tolerant…

Alcohol metabolite acetic acid activates BK channels in a pH-dependent manner and decreases calcium oscillations and exocytosis of secretory granules in rat pituitary GH3 cells.

Acetaldehyde and acetic acid/acetate, the active metabolites of alcohol (ethanol, EtOH), generate actions of their own ranging from behavioral, physiological, to pathological/cancerogenic effects. EtOH and acetaldehyde have been studied to some depth, whereas the effects of acetic acid have been less well explored. In this study, we investigated the effect of acetic acid on big conductance calcium-activated potassium (BK) channels present in GH3 rat pituitary tumor cells in more detail. In whole cell voltage clamp recordings, extracellular application of acetic acid increased total outward cur…

Multifunctional active packaging of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)/cellulose acetate electrospun film with curcumin and tannic acid.

Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) is a biodegradable polyester that has attracted considerable attention in food packaging applications due to its favorable mechanical performance and processability. However, PBAT films are not ideal for the loading and controlled release of active compounds, and their relatively high cost further limits their practical application. This study reports the fabrication of PBAT/cellulose acetate (CA) films by electrospinning, with the incorporation of curcumin (Cur) and tannic acid (TA) as natural bioactive agents to confer antimicrobial and antioxid
