Use of Wideband Acoustic Immittance in Neonates and Infants.

With widespread agreement on the importance of early identification of hearing loss, universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) has become the standard of care in several countries. Despite advancements in screening technology, UNHS and early hearing detection and intervention programs continue to be burdened by high referral rates of false-positive cases due to temporary obstruction of sound in the outer/middle ear at birth. A sensitive adjunct test of middle ear at the time of screening would aid in the interpretation of screening outcomes, minimize unnecessary rescreens, and prioritize refe

Paroxysmal Positional Nystagmus in Acoustic Neuroma Patients.

The association between acoustic neuroma and positional vertigo with paroxysmal positional nystagmus is relatively rare, but, when present, it certainly represents a challenge for the otoneurologist. There are few reports in the literature on this particular issue, and some questions are still unanswered, particularly regarding the characteristics of positional nystagmus that may distinguish between a true benign paroxysmal vertigo and a positional nystagmus associated with the tumor. We present the videonystagmographic patterns of seven patients with acoustic tumor who had paroxysmal position

Occipital Neuralgia following Acoustic Neuroma Resection.

In this paper the authors describe a patient with neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) who presented with sequelae of this disease. They also review the current literature on NF1 and NF2 published between 2001 and 2005. The method used to obtain information for the case report consisted of a family member interview and a review of the patient's chart. For the literature review the authors used the search engine Ovid Medline to identify papers published on the topic between 2001 and 2005. Neurofibromatosis Type 1 appears in approximately one in 2500 to 4000 births, is caused by a defect on 17q11.2, a

Parietal Cortex Is Required for the Integration of Acoustic Evidence.

Sensory-driven decisions are formed by accumulating information over time. Although parietal cortex activity is thought to represent accumulated evidence for sensory-based decisions, recent perturbation studies in rodents and non-human primates have challenged the hypothesis that these representations actually influence behavior. Here, we asked whether the parietal cortex integrates acoustic features from auditory cortical inputs during a perceptual decision-making task. If so, we predicted that selective inactivation of this projection should impair subjects' ability to accumulate sensory evi

Acoustic voice analysis in the COVID-19 era.

OBJECTIVE: Among the different procedures used by the ENT, acoustic analysis of voice has become widely used for correct diagnosis of dysphonia. The instrumental measurements of acoustic parameters were limited during the COVID-19 pandemic by the common belief that a face mask affects the results of the analysis. The purpose of our study was to investigate the impact of surgical masks on F0, jitter, shimmer and harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR) in adults. METHODS: The study was carried out on a selected group of 50 healthy subjects. Voice samples were recorded directly in Praat. All subjects wer

Light sheet microscopy with acoustic sample confinement.

Contactless sample confinement would enable a whole host of new studies in developmental biology and neuroscience, in particular, when combined with long-term, wide-field optical imaging. To achieve this goal, we demonstrate a contactless acoustic gradient force trap for sample confinement in light sheet microscopy. Our approach allows the integration of real-time environmentally controlled experiments with wide-field low photo-toxic imaging, which we demonstrate on a variety of marine animal embryos and larvae. To illustrate the key advantages of our approach, we provide quantitative data for

No Effect of Interstimulus Interval on Acoustic Reflex Thresholds.

The acoustic reflex (AR), a longstanding component of the audiological test battery, has received renewed attention in the context of noise-induced cochlear synaptopathy-the destruction of synapses between inner hair cells and auditory nerve fibers. Noninvasive proxy measures of synaptopathy are widely sought, and AR thresholds (ARTs) correlate closely with synaptic survival in rodents. However, measurement in humans at high stimulus frequencies-likely important when testing for noise-induced pathology-can be challenging; reflexes at 4 kHz are frequently absent or occur only at high stimulus l

[A case of neurolymphomatosis that was diagnosed by acoustic nerve biopsy].

A 58-year-old female was admitted to our hospital because of recurrent multiple cranial neuropathy (right facial palsy followed by involvement of the left trigeminal, facial, acoustic, pharyngeal, and vagal nerves and the right abducens nerve). Brain MRI showed gadolinium enhancement of the right abducens, bilateral facial/acoustic, and left pharyngeal/vagal nerves, and 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography revealed abnormal FDG uptake in the right facial, acoustic, pharyngeal, and vagal nerves and the left cervical lymph nodes. Blood and biochemical analyses did not show a

[Factors of hearing preservation in acoustic neuroma surgery].

Over the past 50 years, the focus of acoustic neuroma surgery has shifted from low mortality and tumor resection to retention of neurological function. Hearing preservation is another point in addition to facial nerve function preservation. Hearing preservation rates overall ranged from 2% to 93% in recent studies. Characteristics such as approach, pre-operative neurological function, tumor size, nerve of origin and fundal fluid of the internal auditory canal have been reported as possible influencing factors. This review provides a summary of recent studies and describes the prognostic factor

[Acquired atresia and stenosis of the external acoustic meatus].

Acquired atresia of the external acoustic meatus is a rare pathological condition characterized by obliteration of the medial part of the external acoustic canal by a soft fibrous plug. The present article presents an overview of a series of cases of acquired atresia and stenosis of the external acoustic meatus with the description of etiology, pathogenesis, and methods for the treatment of this condition. In the majority of the cases, atresia develops at the final stage of granulation external otitis with or without an accompanying dermatological pathology. Another common cause of the acquire

Analysis of Measured and Simulated Supraglottal Acoustic Waves.

To date, although much attention has been paid to the estimation and modeling of the voice source (ie, the glottal airflow volume velocity), the measurement and characterization of the supraglottal pressure wave have been much less studied. Some previous results have unveiled that the supraglottal pressure wave has some spectral resonances similar to those of the voice pressure wave. This makes the supraglottal wave partially intelligible. Although the explanation for such effect seems to be clearly related to the reflected pressure wave traveling upstream along the vocal tract, the influence

Effect of contralateral stimulation on acoustic reflectance measurements.

INTRODUCTION: Acoustic reflectance is an important tool in the assessment of middle ear afflictions, and the method is considered advantageous in relation to tympanometry. There has been a growing interest in the study of contralateral acoustic stimulation and its effect on the activation of the efferent auditory pathway. Studies have shown that the introduction of simultaneous stimulation in the contralateral ear generates alterations in auditory response patterns. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of contralateral stimulation on acoustic reflectance measurements. METHODS: Case study

Variation in acoustic overstimulation changes tinnitus characteristics.

Tinnitus often occurs after exposure to loud noise. This raises the question of whether repeated exposure to noise increases the risk of developing tinnitus. We thus studied tinnitus development after repeated acoustic overstimulation using startle and auditory brainstem-response techniques applied to Mongolian gerbils. Noise with bandwidths ranging from 0.25 up to 0.5 oct were used for repeated acoustic overstimulation. Auditory brainstem response measurements revealed similar threshold shifts in both groups of up to about 30 dB directly after the acoustic overstimulation. We identified an up

Acoustic Features for the Identification of Coronary Artery Disease.

GOAL: Earlier studies have documented that coronary artery disease (CAD) produces weak murmurs, which might be detected through analysis of heart sounds. An electronic stethoscope with a digital signal processing unit could be a low cost and easily applied method for diagnosis of CAD. The current study is a search for heart sound features which might identify CAD. METHODS: Nine different types of features from five overlapping frequency bands were obtained and analyzed using 435 recordings from 133 subjects. RESULTS: New features describing an increase in low-frequency power in CAD patients
