Single-cell transcriptomics unveils photosynthetic adaptation in submersed leaves of heterophyllous Nuphar pumila.

C4 photosynthesis has emerged in various plant lineages as an adaptive response to abiotic stress, as it allows for higher photosynthetic efficiency. C4 photosynthesis has been uncovered in both terrestrial and aquatic plants. However, the extent to which C4 photosynthesis serves as an adaptation to submerged environments in aquatic plants remains elusive. Here, we studied the heterophyllous aquatic plant Nuphar pumila, which has phenotypically distinct leaves depending on the level of submergence. By applying 13C labeling experiments, submersed leaves of N. pumila were shown to exhibit both C

Reassessing the Role of Root Hairs in Adaptation to Low Phosphorus Conditions: Lessons From Wild Barley.

Phosphorus (P) deficiency is one of the most widespread constraints on global crop productivity. Root hairs are widely regarded as a pivotal tissue for P acquisition, yet their quantitative contribution to P uptake and subsequent plant performance remains unclear. We examined 12 cultivated and 12 wild barley genotypes, classified as tolerant or sensitive to low P based on relative total biomass, and quantified root hair number and length in relation to plant performance. While P deficiency generally stimulated root hair proliferation, contrasting strategies emerged: tolerant genotypes have mai

Experience-driven neural efficiency and reserve in aging: Evidence from bilingual attentional adaptation.

Bilingualism offers a powerful test case for understanding how control systems adapt to sustained, variable attentional demands. Converging evidence across behavioral, structural, functional, and clinical literatures indicates that repeated demands for selection, conflict resolution, and language switching are associated with reorganization of control architecture in ways that are consistent with predictive and reinforcement-learning mechanisms, producing two interdependent outcomes. Efficiency emerges as control is redistributed from metabolically costly frontal regions to posterior and subco

Accelerating yeast adaptation: harnessing thermal stress for genomic diversification and thermotolerance in Yarrowia lipolytica.

Temperature sensitivity remains a significant bottleneck in the industrial application of the oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica. While adaptive evolution and metabolic engineering have produced thermotolerant variants, the impact of thermal stress on the genomic integrity of this non-conventional yeast remains poorly understood. Here, we employed a mutation accumulation framework coupled with whole-genome sequencing to characterize the mutational landscape of Y. lipolytica at 37°C. We observed a 29- and 68-fold increase in single-nucleotide variations and small insertions/deletions, respect

Role of primary protectors of plant cells in salinity tolerance: molecular mechanisms and adaptive strategies.

Salinity stress is among the most pervasive abiotic factors limiting plant growth and agricultural productivity worldwide, currently affecting more than 20% of irrigated croplands. Elevated salt concentrations induce osmotic imbalance, ionic toxicity, and oxidative stress, leading to disruptions in photosynthesis, metabolism, and plant development. To counteract these deleterious effects, plants have evolved intricate, highly coordinated defense systems comprising structural and functional cellular protectors. At the structural level, the cell wall, plasma membrane, vacuole, and peroxisome pla

Structural-Molecular Linkage Shapes the Adaptive Traits of Nuptial Pads in Male Rana chensinensis.

Nuptial pads represent a key sexually dimorphic trait in anurans, with male Rana chensinensis exhibiting these structures on the Finger I of forelimbs. However, the specialized mechanisms underlying their functional adaptation remain poorly understood. This study aimed to characterize the structural and molecular features of these nuptial pads by using Finger Ⅲ as a control. Histological staining and transcriptome analysis were conducted to compare glandular morphology, collagen fiber characteristics, and gene expression profiles between the two fingers. Results revealed significantly larger s

The Maternal Brain in Context: Systemic Physiological Changes Across Pregnancy.

During pregnancy, the maternal body undergoes profound, coordinated physiological adaptations to support the developing fetus, including major shifts in immune regulation and dramatic changes in the vascular system. Accompanying these peripheral adaptations, recent longitudinal studies in humans point to significant remodeling of the nervous system, occurring in lockstep with increases in gonadal hormone production. To understand the neural adaptations tied to pregnancy and the postpartum period, a holistic approach is essential-one that accounts for changes across multiple peripheral systems.

What are the neurological, neurovascular, and psychological responses to stretching across the general population?

Stretching is extensively studied and implemented to improve flexibility, as a component of warm-ups to prepare for activity, to mitigate musculotendinous injury risk, improve cardiovascular health parameters, and optimize post-exercise recovery, among others. However, less attention has focused on the effects of stretching on neurological, neurovascular, and psychological outcomes. Stress represents a pervasive element in contemporary life, with chronic mental and physical stress contributing to adverse health consequences. Evidence suggests that a bout of stretching can acutely increase symp

Global, regional and national projections of heatwave-related death burdens under climate change, urbanisation, adaptation and population growth scenarios.

BACKGROUND: Intensifying heatwaves driven by climate change pose a severe and disproportionate health burden, particularly for populations undergoing rapid demographic and environmental transitions, yet globally comparable projections of future mortality under varying scenarios remain limited. METHODS: We constructed a global, grid-based, and three-stage framework covering 176 countries, integrating climate projections from 20 CMIP6 models under four Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5). Heatwaves were defined as ≥2 consecutive days with grid-specific dai

Evolution and plasticity of the control of breathing in high-altitude natives: Insights from deer mice.

Breathing and the hypoxic ventilatory response are vital determinants of gas exchange and metabolism in hypoxia. High-altitude natives are valuable models for elucidating how plasticity and evolutionary adaptation can shape the control of breathing in chronic hypoxia. Here, we review studies on this issue in deer mice, a species found from sea level to over 4300 m elevation. Distinct populations from high and low altitudes have been bred in captivity and compared in common conditions of normoxia or hypoxia. Low-altitude populations exhibit ventilatory acclimatization to hypoxia (VAH), in which

Cenozoic losses of tree diversity constrain climatic adaptation of Western and Central European forests.

Paleoclimatic changes during the late Cenozoic led to substantial losses of tree diversity in Western and Central Europe. A modern synthesis linking which taxa were lost, the timing of these losses, and their implications for the adaptation of the region's forest ecosystems to ongoing climate change is needed. Here, we compile a dataset of fossil occurrences of tree genera from Western and Central Europe to analyze tree diversity changes during the Cenozoic (66 Ma - present). We find that tree genus richness declined 75% after its peak in the Miocene (23 - 5.3 Ma), with most losses already occ

Error signals in the parvocellular division of the red nucleus, not the magnocellular division, drive adaptation in reaching.

We examined the distinctive roles of the parvocellular (RNp) and magnocellular (RNm) divisions of the red nucleus in motor control and learning. RNp and RNm neurons encoded information on motor error (ME) during the ongoing movement and/or visually apparent error (AE) after the movement ended. Microstimulation of RNp, but not of RNm, induced a gradual increase in error in the direction opposite to the preferred direction of AE and ME. Interestingly, RNm neurons, in particular, encoded information on AE from the preceding reaching movement before the next movement took place. These results indi

Variability of jaw muscles in Tunisian street dogs and adaptation to skull shape.

The impact of artificial selection on the masticatory apparatus of dogs has been poorly studied, and comparative data with dogs subjected to more natural constraints are lacking. This study explores the jaw musculature of Tunisian street dogs, which are largely free from the influence of breed-specific selection. The masticatory muscles (digastric, masseter, temporalis, and pterygoid) of 27 adult dogs were dissected and muscle mass and physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA) were quantified, providing a baseline for comparisons between dogs from more natural versus more controlled environmen

Mitochondrial and peroxisomal Lon proteases are functionally divergent in environmental adaptation and pathobiology of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana.

Lon protease belongs to the AAA‑ATPase family and plays comprehensive physiological roles via maintaining cellular protein homeostasis. This study seeks to explore the functions of Lon protease in biocontrol potential of the filamentous entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana. B. bassiana contained mitochondrial and peroxisomal Lon proteases (BbLon1 and BbLon2) which were functionally analyzed via gene disruption and complementation. BbLon1 contributed to fungal tolerance to oxidative, thermal, hyperosmotic, and cell wall-perturbing stresses as well as iron deficiency. Both BbLon1 and BbLon

Unravelling Hypoxia Tolerance: Transcriptomic and Metabolic Insights From Lucinoma capensis in an Oxygen Minimum Zone.

The lucinid clam Lucinoma capensis thrives at the oxygen minimum zone margins in the Benguela Upwelling System, where oxygen levels fluctuate dramatically. Understanding its adaptation to such extreme conditions provides key insights into survival strategies under fluctuating oxygen availability. We investigated the transcriptomic and metabolomic responses of L. capensis under normoxia, hypoxia, and recovery, focusing on the gills and digestive gland. Our findings highlight distinct organ-specific responses, with the gills showing strong transcriptional changes to oxygen fluctuations, in contr

HIT Your Brain: Neuron and New Run.

The importance of physical activity in neuroscience is gaining increasing recognition. The question arises: What is the specific focus of exercise, and what factors contribute to the observed benefits of exercise in neuroscience? Various forms of exercise have been examined across physiological, psychological, and biochemical experiments within neuroscience. Still, there is a need for greater clarity to identify optimal exercise conditions, including the FITT-VP variables (frequency, intensity, type, and time). This chapter aims to shed light on the positive impacts of high-intensity training (

Dive Deep: Bioenergetic Adaptation of Deep-Sea Animals.

The deep sea, which encompasses the largest habitat on Earth, presents a set of extreme and unique environmental conditions, including high hydrostatic pressure, near-freezing temperatures, and perpetual darkness. These conditions pose significant challenges to the survival and energy management of its inhabitants. Deep-sea organisms have evolved a range of bioenergetic adaptations to negotiate these harsh conditions, ensuring efficient energy acquisition and utilization. This review examines the multifaceted strategies employed by deep-sea animals, focusing on three key areas: energy input, d

A megatransposon drives the adaptation of Thermoanaerobacter kivui to carbon monoxide.

Acetogens are promising industrial biocatalysts for upgrading syngas, a gas mixture containing CO, H2 and CO2 into fuels and chemicals. However, CO severely inhibits growth of many acetogens, often requiring extensive adaptation to enable efficient CO conversion (carboxydotrophy). Here, we adapt the thermophilic acetogen Thermoanaerobacter kivui to use CO as sole carbon and energy source. Isolate CO-1 exhibits rapid growth on CO and syngas (co-utilizing CO, H2 and CO2) in batch and continuous cultures (µmax ~ 0.25 h-1). The carboxydotrophic phenotype is attributed to the mobilization of a CO-d

Interactions with bacteria shape diatom adaptation to carbon concentration changes.

Diatoms are key contributors to global primary production, and have developed intricate partnerships with bacteria through long-term co-evolution. Here, we uncover a syntrophic relationship between the model obligate photoautotroph diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum and the rod-shaped bacterium Loktanella vestfoldensis, which enables the diatom to indirectly utilize glucose. To be specific, growth of the diatom depends on the support of L. vestfoldensis for the supply of necessary carbon source when glucose serves as the sole carbon source, while L. vestfoldensis shows dependence on P. tricornut

Aging as the wound that fails to heal: a bioenergetic continuum of resolution failure.

Aging may be conceptualized as a wound that fails to heal, characterized by persistent, unresolved inflammation. Building on Ogrodnik's "unhealed wound" model, this Perspective extends the Exposure-Related Malnutrition (ERM) framework to propose a bioenergetic interpretation of aging. ERM links chronic stress adaptation, nutrient misallocation, and mitochondrial insufficiency to sustained bioenergetic debt that impedes the transition from catabolic containment to anabolic repair. Across tissues, this energetic shortfall manifests as metabolic inflexibility, lipid-droplet accumulation, and a co
