Primary pulmonary adenoid cystic carcinoma- clinicopathological features and predictors of poor outcome.

INTRODUCTION: Primary pulmonary adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare disease. Its clinico-pathological features, course of disease, therapeutic strategy, and survival data have not been fully elucidated. We aimed to study the clinicopathological characteristics of primary pulmonary adenoid cystic carcinomas in north India. METHODS: This study was a retrospective, single-centre, cohort study. The database of the hospital was searched for a period of seven years to identify all patients with primary pulmonary adenoid cystic carcinoma. RESULTS: Out of 6050 lung tumors, 10 were primary adenoid cys

A Rare Case of Orbital Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Mimicking as Optic Nerve Glioma.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is an uncommon epithelial cell tumour that usually originates from glands. They arise from the upper respiratory tract, lungs, mammary glands, and skin, but most commonly from the salivary glands and lacrimal glands. Our article reports a 53-year-old individual presenting with a history of diminution of visual acuity over the past one and a half months, also associated with a right-sided headache and throbbing eye pain not relieved by medication. Examination revealed right axial proptosis, ptosis, and visual acuity of 6/36, right afferent pupillary defect (RAPD), restr

Distinct clinicopathological and genomic features in solid and basaloid adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) of the breast is a rare indolent carcinoma of salivary gland-type tumors, frequently associated with MYB genetic alteration. Solid and basaloid adenoid cystic carcinoma (SB-AdCC) is considered a sparse variant of AdCC. This study sought to search for clinicopathological and genomic features in SB-AdCC. Registered clinicopathological data on a cohort of 13 AdCC of the breast cases, including six conventional adenoid cystic carcinoma (C-AdCC) cases and seven SB-AdCC cases, were collected. MYB gene rearrangement via fluorescent in situ hybridization was investigate

Risk factors and antibiotic sensitivity of aerobic bacteria in Chinese children with adenoid hypertrophy.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial infection of adenoid is currently considered to be an important cause of adenoid hypertrophy (AH) in children. Although several bacteriology studies on adenoid diseases have been reported, the aerobic bacterial study regarding risk factors and antibiotic sensitivity of AH in Chinese children is lacking. This study aims to investigate the risk factors for aerobic bacterial colonization of AH in Chinese children and to elucidate aerobic bacterial profiles and antibiotic sensitivity. METHODS: Samples were collected from the adenoid core and surface tissue of 466 children un

Cricotracheal Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma: Insights Into the Diagnosis and Management of an Uncommon Anatomic Variant.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is the second most common malignant salivary gland tumor and accounts for 30% of minor salivary gland tumors. Its location in the larynx and trachea are rare. We present the case of a 45-year-old healthy male whose MRI revealed a posterior endoluminal tumor that invaded the posteroinferior perichondrium of the cricoid lamina and displaced the hypopharynx and esophagus. A left-limited cervical surgical exploration and an intraluminal incisional biopsy through the tracheostomy space were performed by another surgical team. The pathological study reported an ACC, T4

Inhibition of DEC2 is necessary for exiting cell dormancy in salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Patients were prone to have poor prognosis once dormant tumor cells being reactivated. However, the molecular mechanism of tumor cell dormancy remains poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the function of DEC2 in the dormancy of salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (SACC) in vitro and vivo. METHODS: The function of DEC2 in tumor dormancy of SACC was investigated in nude mice by establishing primary and lung metastasis model. Meanwhile, the interaction between hypoxia and SACC dormancy and the role of DEC2 were demonstrated through CoCl2 induced hypoxia-mimicking microenv

The utility of TP53 and PIK3CA mutations as prognostic biomarkers in salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma.

OBJECTIVES: Despite wide excision and post-operative irradiation, loco-regional and/or metastatic recurrence is a significant clinical problem in salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (SACC). Reliable biomarkers are required to tailor post-treatment surveillance to patients at highest risk of recurrence. We sought to determine the utility of TP53 and PIK3CA mutations as prognostic biomarkers in SACC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: DNA was extracted from archival tumour blocks of 145 SACC patients from 66 UK referral centres and sequenced for TP53 and PIK3CA mutations. Clinical, pathological and outcome d

Lymph node metastasis of parotid gland high-grade adenoid-cystic carcinoma.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is one of the most common salivary gland malignancies. In rare cases, ACC undergoes high-grade transformation, which is associated with poor prognosis, in contrast to relatively long survival in the conventional ACC. Conventional ACC is characterized by typical histopathology showing glandular arrangement with sharply demarcated lumina, the tumor cells have sparse cytoplasm and angulated hyperchromatic nuclei. ACCs undergoing high-grade transformation lack these morphological features. In this paper we present a case of 46 years old female patient presenting with

The Relation of Allergy to Adenoid Hypertrophy and Otitis Media with Effusion: A Cross-sectional Study.

The exact mechanisms of Adenoid hypertrophy (AHT) pathogenesis and otitis media with effusion (OME) are unclear but there is increasing evidence that allergies may play a role. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of atopy and the effect of anti-allergic drugs in patients with AHT and OME. In a non-randomized, prospective cross-sectional study, 122 patients younger than 18 years of age with AHT or OME were included. Atopic patients based on clinical symptoms of allergic disorders and/or elevated levels of total serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) were referred to allergists and tested for allergen

Bilateral choroidal metastasis from adenoid cystic carcinoma of the submandibular salivary gland.

PURPOSE: A case of bilateral choroidal metastasis from an adenoid cystic carcinoma of the submandibular gland is described. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 45-years-old woman with a history of metastatic adenoid cystic carcinoma presented with visual impairment in both eyes. Fundus images showed bilateral creamy-white choroidal masses. Optical coherence tomography revealed subretinal fluid with high reflective speckles and a "lumpy bumpy" anterior contour of the lesions. Fluorescein angiography showed a hypofluorescent pattern of the lesions in early arterial phases, and progressive late hyperfluorescenc

Can Symptoms Differentiate Between Chronic Adenoiditis and Chronic Rhinosinusitis in Pediatric Patients.

The purpose of this article is to differentiate pediatric patients with chronic adenoiditis from those with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) based on presenting symptoms. A chart review from a tertiary care facility with pediatric patients who presented with suspected CRS from 2006 to 2014 was identified. We compared patient characteristics, clinical symptoms, duration of symptoms, and past medial history using univariate and multivariate logistic regression models. Based on recent literature, utilizing the computed tomography (CT) score, we identified those children with CRS versus those with chr
