Understanding caregivers' perspectives on adolescent psychiatric admission and re-admission.

BACKGROUND: In India, adolescent psychiatric hospitalization is influenced by clinical, familial, and systemic factors. Caregivers' perspectives on admission decisions remain underexplored, particularly in low-resource settings. AIM: To explore the perceived need for inpatient admission or re-admission of adolescents with mental illness, as expressed by their primary caregivers. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted at a tertiary Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Centre in India. Twenty-six primary caregivers of adolescents (13-18 years) were interviewed using a validated sem

Outcome measures were difference in complications and mortality between the two groups. RESULTS: A total of 31,923 adolescent trauma patients were tested for alcohol; 21% (n = 6,704) of whom tested positive for alcohol. Prope

Motivational Interviewing to Reduce Substance Use in Adolescents with Psychiatric Comorbidity.

Substance use among adolescents with one or more psychiatric disorders is a significant public health concern. In this study, 151 psychiatrically hospitalized adolescents, ages 13-17 with comorbid psychiatric and substance use disorders, were randomized to a two-session Motivational Interviewing intervention to reduce substance use plus treatment as usual (MI) vs. treatment as usual only (TAU). Results indicated that the MI group had a longer latency to first use of any substance following hospital discharge relative to TAU (36 days versus 11 days). Adolescents who received MI also reported le

A descriptive and exploratory pilot study into school re-entrance for adolescents who have received treatment for cancer.

The purpose of this exploratory and descriptive pilot study was to explore the process of school re-entrance for adolescents receiving outpatient treatment for cancers, using grounded theory. All adolescents who had received a minimum of 3 weeks' hospital-based schooling, but had since returned to their own schools, and were booked for an outpatient appointment on a paediatric oncology unit during a specified 2-week period, took part in an audio-tape-recorded, semi-structured interview. The sample consisted of five such adolescents. Data were analysed using the constant comparison method of gr

Adolescent substance use patterns and subsequent risk of mental and behavioural disorders, substance use, and suicidal behaviour: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Despite growing knowledge of distinct patterns of substance use in adolescents, their associations with later adverse mental health and substance use outcomes remain poorly understood. We aimed to identify adolescent substance use patterns, describe adolescents with distinct patterns, and test the hypothesis that substance use patterns predict mental disorders, hospital contacts due to alcohol or drug use, and suicidal behaviour. METHODS: We used a school-based survey of 68 301 adolescents (mean age 17·8 [SD 0·99]) in upper-secondary education, to identify substance use patterns u

Adolescent contraception: survey of attitudes and practice of health professionals.

In Nigeria, there is a persistent reluctance to provide adolescents with contraceptives and this is based largely on the premise that the culture does not support pre-marital sexual activity. However, several studies have revealed that a large number of adolescents are experiencing early sexual debut, some as early as 13 years. Furthermore, mortality resulting from termination of unwanted pregnancies is on the increase among Nigerian adolescents. The aim of this study is to assess the attitudes and practice of health workers in Ibadan regarding adolescent contraception. A structured questionna

CLINICAL/METHODOLOGICAL ISSUE: Hematogenously disseminated osteomyelitis in children and adolescents is an acute disease with a substantial threat to the health of a child or adolescent. Due to the destruction of bones or joints within hours to days and the risk of bacterial sepsis, it is a feared pediatric emergency that requires hospitalization in a children's hospital and rapid action. STANDARD RADIOLOGICAL METHODS: The standard radiological procedures are X‑ray, sonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Sex ratio of infectious mononucleosis and possible relevance to multiple sclerosis.

Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is associated with the risk of developing multiple sclerosis (MS). Using databases of hospital admissions for England (1999-2005), we investigated the female-to-male ratios (FMRs) for admission to hospital for IM and MS stratified by age. Males were more frequently admitted for IM for all age groups apart from ages 10-14 (FMR 1.50; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.36-1.64) and, borderline significantly, at ages 15-19 (FMR 1.03, 95% CI 0.99-1.08). This intriguing aspect of IM epidemiology in adolescence, the atypical female excess, may be linked to the sex ratio of M

RESULTS: Conflicting with the law means something negative and bad for the institutionalized adol

Adolescents' Experiences of Scoliosis Surgery and the Trajectory of Self-Reported Pain: A Mixed-Methods Study.

Scoliosis surgery for adolescents is a major surgery with a difficult recovery. In this study, a mixed-methods design was used to broaden the scope of adolescents' experiences of surgery for idiopathic scoliosis and the trajectory of self-reported pain during the hospital stay and through the first 6 months of recovery at home. Self-reports of pain, diaries, and interviews were analyzed separately. The results were then integrated with each other. The trajectory of self-reported pain varied hugely between individuals. Adolescents experienced physical suffering and struggled to not be overwhelm

Study: ED providers may be missing cases of PID among adolescents.

A new study suggests that ED providers may be missing cases of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in adolescents, a condition that, when left untreated, can lead to infertility, chronic pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancy, and pelvic abscesses. In an effort to improve diagnosis of PID, the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta broadened its criteria for diagnosis in 2002, but data show that diagnosis of PID in adolescents has remained stagnant. Experts say part of the problem is that providers are often reluctant to query young people about their sexual histories, a crucial element when diagnosing

Depression and associated factors among primary caregivers of children and adolescents with mental illness in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Mental illnesses among children and adolescents are under-recognized and under-treated problems. Depression is one of today's all-too-silent health crises in caregivers. Although primary caregivers of children and adolescents with mental illness are more frequently depressed, little attention is being given to the problem in Ethiopia. Thus, this study aimed to assess prevalence of depression and associated factors among primary caregivers of children and adolescents with mental illness in Ethiopia. METHODS: Institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among primary caregi

Progression of amygdala volumetric abnormalities in adolescents after their first manic episode.

OBJECTIVE: Although previous neuroimaging studies suggest that adolescents with bipolar disorder exhibit smaller amygdala volumes compared with healthy adolescents, whether these abnormalities are present at illness onset or instead develop over time remains unclear. The aim of this study was to conduct a prospective longitudinal investigation comparing amygdala neurodevelopment among adolescents after their first manic episode, adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and healthy adolescents.
