Whereas most of studies investigating relationship between oral health and atherosclerosis have focused on periodontitis, very few of them were examined about occlusal status of natural teeth which possibly influence dietary habit. The primary aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the association between the occlusal support of posterior teeth and the prevalence of atherosclerosis in community-dwelling septuagenarians. Also, the second aim was to test the hypothesis that the intake of key nutrients for atherosclerosis prevention would have a mediating effect on the relationship

Mouth human populated set of microorganisms that are in dynamic equilibrium and forming microbiocaenosis. In a situation where this balance is disturbed, there is a "activation" of pathogens, including those that lead to the development of inflammatory periodontal diseases. Quantifying the relation parodontopatogenov in this material may be an important diagnostic tool, but data on the profile of individual microbiota subbiotopov mouth so far very little. In this study, we quantified the six pathogenic representatives of the periodontal pocket microbiota in health and periodontitis. Found that

Cell-mediated and humoral immune responses were assessed in 21 patients with localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP), and in an equal number of control subjects. The cell-mediated immunity, assessed by enumeration of total rosette forming cells [TRFC] and high affinity rosette forming cells [HARFC], was found to be depressed in LJP patients compared to controls. Estimation of serum immunoglobulins G,A,M,D and E levels were done using single radial immunodiffusion. All the immunoglobulins except IgD were found to be elevated significantly in LJP patients. The defective immune response found in L

The rare entity of periodontitis in a 4 1/2-year old child and subsequent changes over a 4-year follow-up period will be presented. Various examinations (among other immunological tests, biochemical differentiation of dermal fibroblasts, and ultrastructural skin biopsies) were made to identify whether this was a case of genuine prepuberty periodontitis or of periodontitis secondary to a general disease. On the basis of the results the case was diagnosed as Ehlers-Danlos Disease Type VIII, although at the same time signs of impaired granulocyte function were observed.

Periodontal attachment loss in the maxillary anterior region can often lead to esthetic and functional clinical problems. Lifelong motivation is essential to the supportive therapy for these patients, and the maintenance of good esthetics, combined with conducive to maintaining long term dental and professional health. This paper aims to demonstrate an innovative treatment option for dealing with aesthetic challenges posed by a number of patients who have undergone initial cause related therapy for aggressive periodontitis.

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (A. actinomycetemcomitans) is a Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic bacillus that causes periodontal diseases such as localized aggressive periodontitis (LAP) and. consequently. bone resorption. The potential virulence factors of this organism are powerful leukotoxin, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), cell surface-associated materials, enzymes, and less well-defined virulence factors that will modulate the activity of the host defenses. This organism can induce bone resorption by various virulence factors in periodontal disease. In this review article, we reviewe…

Periodontitis is a chronic oral inflammatory disease that is caused by dental plaque pathogens. Periodontal disease development and evolution are based on the host immune system, humoral and cellular immunity, the integrity of the tissues, and certain endocrine and nutritional factors. Mitochondria are significantly involved in periodontal infections and inflammation, which play a role in the inflammatory response in a variety of ways. In general, oxidative stress causes a stressful environment that subsequently leads to tissue damage and chronic inflammation. Several mutations and alterations

OBJECTIVE: To assess the concentration of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-1beta in saliva of periodontally diseased and healthy patients and their relationship with the periodontal status.
DESIGN: Unstimulated whole saliva samples from patients with chronic periodontitis (n=30), aggressive periodontitis (n=18) and healthy controls (n=18) were obtained for the study. The periodontal status of each subject was assessed by criteria based on probing depth, clinical attachment loss and the extent/severity of periodontal breakdown. The levels of IL-1beta were measured in saliva samples with a high …

Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease that involves the destruction of hard and soft tissues surrounding the tooth. Routine periodontal treatment includes mechanical debridement (surgical and non-surgical) and the systemic administration of antibiotics. In contrast, severe and chronic periodontitis involves aggressive tissue destruction and bone resorption, and the damage is usually irreversible. In these severe cases, bone grafts, the delivery of growth hormones, and guided tissue regeneration can all be used to stimulate periodontal regeneration. However, these approaches do not result i

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a group of inflammatory diseases affecting the supporting tissues of the tooth. Both aggressive periodontitis (AP) and chronic periodontitis (CP) have a multifactorial etiology, with dental plaque as the initiating factor. However, the initiation and progression of periodontitis are influenced by other factors including microbiologic, social and behavioral and systemic and genetic factors. The prevalence of periodontal diseases varies in different regions of the world according to the definition of periodontitis and the study population, and there are indications t…

BACKGROUND: Neutrophils constitute the main phagocytic cell system in mammalian host defense against an infecting agent. Abnormalities in leukocyte number and function are associated with increased susceptibility to periodontal diseases. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the in vitro phagocytic properties of crevicular and peripheral blood neutrophils in healthy and periodontitis subjects.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 30 subjects, that is, 10 patients in each of the following three groups: healthy controls, chronic periodontitis (CP), and localized aggressive periodontitis (LAP), w…

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic treatment involves movement of teeth by compression and resorption of the alveolar bone using orthodontic forces. These movements are closely linked to the interactions between the teeth and the periodontal tissues that support them. Owing to an increase in adults seeking orthodontic treatment, orthodontists increasingly encounter patients with periodontal diseases, in whom orthodontic treatment is contraindicated. In rare cases, periodontitis may develop after treatment initiation. However, no approach for treating periodontitis after the initiation of orthodontic trea

Adherence is a major pathogenicity factor for many bacteria. The aim of this study was to measure the adherence potential of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (A.a.) for buccal epithelial cells (BEC). In the second part of the study, the inhibitory potential of saliva on adherence between A.a. and BEC was tested. Saliva specimens were obtained from three groups of subjects: a group of normal subjects (NS), a group of subject with localized juvenile periodontitis (LJPS) and a group of subjects with adult periodontitis (APS). Clinical strains of A.a. showed a major adherence potential for BEC
