Prevalence of common phobias and their socio-demographic correlates in children and adolescents in a traditional developing society.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify the most common phobias in children and adolescents and to determine the prevalence, age di … the 12-15 year age group (46.3%). Social phobia (12.7%) was the commonest phobia found followed by agoraphobia (8.6%). Secondary school children were highly afflicted with social phobia (14.9%), agoraphobia (11.7%) and specific phobia (9.6%), while preparatory students (8.3%) were more likely to have 'medical' phobia (fear of physical illness, medical tests …

Korean panic disorder severity scale: construct validity by confirmatory factor analysis.

The Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS) is a seven-item instrument used to rate the overall severity of panic disorder. This scale has previously evidenced excellent psychometric properties in a sample of patients with panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia. However, despite several factor-analytic PDSS studies, the number of factors has not been entirely consistent. Our objective in this study, then, was to evaluate the fit of two competing models to data collected with a sample of 176 patients with panic disorder. Patients (N = 176) who fulfilled DSM-IV criteria for panic disorder, wit…

Panic disorder subtypes: further clinical differences.

Panic disorder (PD) is a heterogeneous phenomenon with respect to symptom profile. Most studies agree that a group of patients with prominent respiratory symptoms emerged as a distinct PD subtype. In this study we compared a range of clinical features associated with PD and agoraphobia in patients with respiratory (RS) and nonrespiratory (NRS) subtypes of PD. The participants were 124 patients with PD (79 women and 45 men), with or without agoraphobia, diagnosed by DSM-IV criteria. Following the observer-rated Panic Disorder Severity Scale assessment, subjects completed self-report measures, i…

Is there a hypersensitive visual alarm system in panic disorder?

Agoraphobia in panic disorder (PD) has been related to abnormal balance system function. Vision influences balance and behavioural adaptations; peripheral vision influences orienting and fast defensive reactions whereas central vision analyzes details of objects. We have hypothesized that the abnormal balance function in PD could be mainly related to peripheral vision as part of a defensive alarm system in the brain. In 25 patients with PD and agoraphobia and 31 healthy controls we assessed, by posturography, balance system reactivity to video-films projected in peripheral and central visual f…

Diverse Profiles of Anxiety Related Disorders in Fragile X, Cornelia de Lange and Rubinstein-Taybi Syndromes.

Anxiety disorders are heightened in specific genetic syndromes in comparison to intellectual disability of heterogeneous aetiology. In this study, we described and contrasted anxiety symptomatology in fragile X (FXS), Cornelia de Lange (CdLS) and Rubinstein-Taybi syndromes (RTS), and compared the symptomatology to normative data for typically-developing children and children diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Scores did not differ between children diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and (a) participants with FXS on social phobia, panic/agoraphobia, physical injury fears, and obsessive-compulsi…

The role of catastrophic misinterpretation of bodily sensations and panic self-efficacy in predicting panic severity.

This study investigated the role of both negative and positive cognitions in predicting panic severity in an international sample of patients diagnosed with panic disorder (with and without agoraphobia). One hundred and fifty-nine patients were administered the Brief Bodily Sensations Interpretation Questionnaire (BBSIQ), the Self-efficacy to Control Panic Attacks Questionnaire, and the Panic and Agoraphobia Scale (PAS) prior to receiving treatment. Regression analyses indicated that both catastrophic misinterpretation of bodily sensations and panic self-efficacy independently predicted panic …

The recollection of parental rearing styles in patients with panic disorder.

Studies of the mental image of parents assessed by means of the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI) in patients with panic disorder (according to DSM-III-R) have shown conflicting results. We examined 45 patients with panic disorder with and without agoraphobia and 116 controls using the PBI. As a group, patients with panic disorder reported significantly less care and more protection from parents than the controls. This difference was shown by the patients who had panic disorder with major agoraphobia, while those with minor agoraphobia did not differ from the controls. The present study suppor…

Anxiety in the Lundby Study: re-evaluation according to DSM-III-R, incidence and risk.

This study presents the incidence and risk of Anxiety Disorders according to DSM-III-R in the 1947 Lundby cohort. The figures are based on a re-evaluation of 124 first-ever episodes of 'Anxiety' according to the Lundby definition. Panic Disorders without/with Agoraphobia constituted the largest groups, while a proportionally low rate of Generalized Anxiety Disorder was obtained. The incidence rates per 100 person years in Panic Disorders without Agoraphobia were 0.07 for men and 0.20 for women, the female dominance being statistically significant. Corresponding figures in Panic Disorders with …

Anxiety disorders in a neuromuscular clinic.

Twenty patients with myasthenia gravis and 15 patients with polymyositis/dermatomyositis were assessed with a structured interview. Fifteen patients (43%) were diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Significantly more myasthenic patients (40%) than polymyositis/dermatomyositis patients (7%) were diagnosed with panic disorder/agoraphobia. These findings suggest that the symptoms of myasthenia gravis may predispose vulnerable individuals to panic disorder/agoraphobia.

Platelet [3H]imipramine binding in patients with panic disorder.

[3H]imipramine binding to platelets was measured in 17 drug-free panic disorder patients and 14 healthy controls. No difference in Bmax or Kd values was found between the two groups. Patients with a past history of major melancholic depression or severe agoraphobia had similar binding parameters as panic disorder patients without a history of depression or severe agoraphobia.

Cortisol awakening response in drug-naïve panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis is involved in the pathophysiology of panic disorder (PD). The findings remain inconsistent. Cortisol awakening response (CAR) is a noninvasive biomarker of stress system activity. We designed the study to assess CAR in drug-naïve PD patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We assessed CAR in 14 psychotropic drug-naïve outpatients with PD and 14 healthy controls. The severity of PD was assessed with Panic and Agoraphobia Scale. The severity of anxiety and depression was screened with Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. RESULTS:…

Somatotype in panic patients.

The aim of the study was to test whether an association exists between asthenic somatotype, as measured by the Quetelet index, and panic and or agoraphobia. Ninety-nine cases with panic and/or agoraphobia diagnosed at the psychiatric outpatient clinic of a general teaching hospital were compared to 99 controls with psychiatric conditions other than panic and agoraphobia, and to 64 medical controls, matched by age and gender. No differences in weight, height and raw Quetelet and ponderal indexes were found between panic cases and controls. However, 33.3% of cases, but only 19.2% of psychiatric …

From 11 sites in New England and Missouri, 711 patients with > or = one of five index anxiety disorders were recruited onto a longitudinal study in which they were interviewed every 6 months regarding symptoms, course, and treatments received. Of the five disorders studied, panic disorder without agoraphobia was the disorder most often found as a sole diagnosis and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) was least often found alone, both as lifetime diagnoses or when restricted to cases active at intake. Panic disorder with agoraphobia and agoraphobia without history of panic disorder (AWOPD) had t…

Onset of panic disorder.

The situations in which the first panic attack occurred were investigated in 44 patients affected by panic disorder. Although the first panic attack was reported to be unexpected and no avoidance was present before it, 75.8% of patients (N = 22) with panic disorder with agoraphobia had their first panic attack in phobogenic situations, compared with 20% of patients (N = 3) with panic disorder without agoraphobia.

Familial clustering of major depression and anxiety disorders in Australian and Dutch twins and siblings.

The aim of this study was to investigate familial influences and their dependence on sex for panic disorder and/or agoraphobia, social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder and major depression. Data from Australian (N = 2287) and Dutch (N = 1185) twins and siblings who were selected for a linkage study and participated in clinical interviews to obtain lifetime Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; DSM-IV) diagnoses were used. In a liability model, tetrachoric correlations were estimated in sibling pairs and sex differences between sibling correlations were tested. For…

Predictors of outcome in outpatients with anxiety disorders: the Leiden routine outcome monitoring study.

Little is known about the predictors of outcome in anxiety disorders in naturalistic outpatient settings. We analyzed 2-year follow-up data collected through Routine Outcome Monitoring (ROM) in a naturalistic sample of 917 outpatients in psychiatric specialty care in order to identify factors predicting outcome. We included patients with panic disorder with or without agoraphobia, agoraphobia without panic, social phobia, or generalized anxiety disorder. Main findings from Cox regression analyses demonstrated that several socio-demographic variables (having a non-Dutch ethnicity [HR = 0.71)], …
