Effect of altered gravity on the neurobiology of fish.

In vertebrates (including humans) altered gravitational environments such as weightlessness can induce malfunction of the inner ears due to … havior and neuroplastic reactivities. Investigations employing microgravity (spaceflight, parabolic aircraft flights, clinostat) and hypergravity (laboratory centrifuges as ground-based research tools) provide insights for understanding the basic phenomena, many of which remain only incompletely explained.

Prevalence of spectacle wear among U.S. Army aviators.

The advanced avionic and electro-optical systems installed in Army rotary wing aircraft are becoming increasingly incompatible with spectacle wear. Therefore, the prevalence of spectacle wear among Army aviators is an important consideration in the development of future systems. A review of spectacle prevalence data from the Aviation Epidemiology Data Register (AEDR) for the years 1986, 1987, 1988, and 1989 was performed. Data were consistent across all 4 years, with mean prevalence of spectacle wear being 22% for active component forces. Reserve and National Guard components displayed mean sp…

Mortality among aerial pesticide applicators and flight instructors: a reprint.

A cohort mortality study was conducted of male aerial pesticide applicators and flight instructors identified from computerized Federal Aviation Administration medical examination records from 1965-1979. Vital status of 9,677 applicators and 9,727 instructors was determined through January 1, 1980, and standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were calculated. The overall SMR was 127 for applicators (699 deaths) and 93 for instructors (454 deaths). Fatalities from nonmotor vehicle accidents, mostly aircraft crashes, were in notable excess (SMR = 1,168 among applicators, 630 among instructors), wher…

The effect of mechanism-driven spanwise folding kinematics on the aerodynamic performance of flapping wings.

This study presents a mechanism-driven analysis of spanwise folding kinematics in bird-inspired ornithopters, in which the folding motion is generated by a planar crank-rocker mechanism augmented with a folding loop. A closed-form position analysis of the linkage yields an analytical expression for the folding phase angleas a function of the flapping-loop link lengths alone, and a two-stage genetic-algorithm optimization identifies the linkage geometry that minimizesfor prescribed inner-wing kinematic targets. An in-house integrated simulation framework, which couples a modified unsteady vorte

Airplane wastewater as a gateway for pathogen surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Air travel plays a key role in the global spread of many diseases, including COVID-19. Surveillance of international travelers is useful for the detection of emerging viruses and variants of concern, especially in a context of global relaxations in testing policy. We aimed to assess the feasibility of using wastewater surveillance from airplanes as a method for monitoring SARS-CoV-2 variants and other pathogens entering Belgium. METHODS: From January to March 2023, in the wake of the COVID pandemic, 32 wastewater samples were collected at Brussels Airport from direct flights origi

Triple Stiffness: A Bioinspired Strategy to Combine Load-Bearing, Durability, and Impact-Resistance.

Structures with variable stiffness have received increasing attention in the fields of robotics, aerospace, structural, and biomedical engineering. This is because they not only adapt to applied loads, but can also combine mutually exclusive properties. Here inspired by insect wings, the concept of "triple stiffness" is introduced and applied to engineering systems that exhibit three distinct deformability regimes. By implementing "flexible joints," "mechanical stoppers," and "buckling zones," structures are engineered to be not only load-bearing and durable, but also impact-resistant. To prac

Predicting dengue importation into Europe, using machine learning and model-agnostic methods.

The geographical spread of dengue is a global public health concern. This is largely mediated by the importation of dengue from endemic to non-endemic areas via the increasing connectivity of the global air transport network. The dynamic nature and intrinsic heterogeneity of the air transport network make it challenging to predict dengue importation. Here, we explore the capabilities of state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms to predict dengue importation. We trained four machine learning classifiers algorithms, using a 6-year historical dengue importation data for 21 countries in Europe

Performance of automated external defibrillators under conditions of in-flight turbulence.

INTRODUCTION: Modern automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are designed to prevent shock delivery when excessive motion produces rhythm disturbances mimicking ventricular fibrillation (VF). This has been reported as a safety issue in airline operations, where turbulent motion is commonplace. We aimed to evaluate whether all seven AEDs can deliver shock appropriately in a flight simulator under turbulent conditions. METHODS: The study was performed in a Boeing 747-400 full motion flight simulator in Hong Kong. An advanced life support manikin and arrhythmia generator were used to produce si

Riding (High) into the danger zone: a review of potential differences in chemical exposures in fighter pilots resulting from high altitude and G-forces.

When in flight, pilots of high performance aircraft experience conditions unique to their profession. Training flights, performed as often as several times a week, can expose these pilots to altitudes in excess of 15 km (~50,000 ft, with a cabin pressurized to an altitude of ~20,000 ft), and the maneuvers performed in flight can exacerbate the G-forces felt by the pilot. While the pilots specifically train to withstand these extreme conditions, the physiologic stress could very likely lead to differences in the disposition of chemicals in the body, and consequently, dangerously high exposures.…

Flatulence on airplanes: just let it go.

Flatus is natural and an invariable consequence of digestion, however at times it creates problems of social character due to sound and odour. This problem may be more significant on commercial airplanes where many people are seated in limited space and where changes in volume of intestinal gases, due to altered cabin pressure, increase the amount of potential flatus. Holding back flatus on an airplane may cause significant discomfort and physical symptoms, whereas releasing flatus potentially presents social complications. To avoid this problem we humbly propose that active charcoal should be

Coma blisters sans coma.

Coma blisters (CBs) are self-limited lesions that occur in regions of pressure during unconscious states classically induced by barbiturates. We report a case of CBs sans coma that were histologically confirmed in a 41-year-old woman who developed multiple tense abdominal bullae with surrounding erythema following a transatlantic flight. Interestingly, the patient was fully conscious and denied medication use or history of medical conditions. A clinical diagnosis of CBs was confirmed by histopathologic findings of eccrine gland necrosis, a hallmark of these bulIous lesions.

Web-based GIS: the vector-borne disease airline importation risk (VBD-AIR) tool.

BACKGROUND: Over the past century, the size and complexity of the air travel network has increased dramatically. Nowadays, there are 29.6 million scheduled flights per year and around 2.7 billion passengers are transported annually. The rapid expansion of the network increasingly connects regions of endemic vector-borne disease with the rest of the world, resulting in challenges to health systems worldwide in terms of vector-borne pathogen importation and disease vector invasion events. Here we describe the development of a user-friendly Web-based GIS tool: the Vector-Borne Disease Airline Imp

Air travel and thrombosis.

The current literature suggests a weak association between long-distance travel and the development of asymptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE). Most of the data available relate to air travel and suggest that the risk is largely confined to asymptomatic calf vein thrombosis in passengers with additional risk factors for VTE, travelling for more than 8 h. The risk of both symptomatic and fatal pulmonary embolism (PE) is very small. The causal role of travel-related factors (e.g. stasis, dehydration, cramped seats and hypobaric hypoxia) is not yet proved but, given the plausible risk-free bene
