A retrospective study of 76 children with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) who were admitted to the Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary. Alberta between January 1982 and December 1988 was undertaken to explore the gastrointestinal manifestations of the syndrome. Bitumen is extracted from oil sands in the Athabasca Oil Sands region (AOSR) of Alberta, Canada. Much of the bitumen-derived toxicity in mine waste is attributable to naphthenic acid fraction compounds (NAFCs). The physical activity of referees (n = 4) and linesmen (n = 6) was analyzed from videotapes of four varsity hockey games to determine the frequency, average duration, and total time spent in each of six activity categories. The average duration of activity was low while frequency of occurrence was high. Low intensity activities occupied 96% of total time for referees and 94% of time for linesmen. Information on ethyl alcohol intoxication in children is scarce. A retrospective study was conducted by chart reviews of 27 patients with documented ethanol ingestion admitted to the Alberta Children's Hospital, Foothills Provincial Hospital, Calgary General Hospital or Holy Cross Hospital from 1969 to 1984. Six patients had hypoglycemia and one experienced a convulsion. The rate of alcohol elimination was found to be greater than 6.2 mM/L/hr (28.4 mg/dl/hr), approximately twice the rate seen in adults. Six patients had hypokalemia, and two had severe metabolic acidosis.

Sera from snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) trapped near Rochester, Alberta, Canada were tested for Powassan virus antibody by the constant virus/serum dilution neutralization test. Of 1264 serum samples tested, 137 had an antibody titer of at least 1:4 for Powassan virus. Ten hares were inoculated with Powassan virus in the laboratory. Viremia lasted 4-5 days and ceased with the appearance of Powassan antibody in the serum. Neutralizing antibody reached a peak titer of 1:119 on day 15 post-inoculation and was still detectable 13 months post-inoculation.
