Surgery in the elderly is not a challenge anymore. Yet, malnutrition stays one of the principal adverse factors in surgery, particularly in the aged. In ten months, 250 patients aged 65 years or older (mean: 75) have been operated in our general surgery department, with 25% of major complications and a mortality 3.6%. Human albumin infusions are frequently administered to patients with nephrotic syndrome. We reviewed the clinical course of 27 patients with minimal change nephrotic syndrome (MCNS) in which 16 patients were treated with human albumin (group A) and 11 were not (group B). The percent of body weight gain, serum total protein, serum albumin, urine protein excretion and renal function were equivalent in both groups as was the initial dose of corticosteroid and amount of dietary protein intake. Binding of the bronchodilators N3-alkylxanthine and N3-alkyl-N1-methylxanthine derivatives to guinea pig serum albumin was investigated in vitro using the ultrafiltration method. This study has examined glycation of serum albumin and its role in evolving diabetic proteinuria. Renal clearances of endogenous glycated and nonglycated albumin were studied in groups of normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic Wistar-Kyoto rats over a 32 week period. Concentrations of glycated and nonglycated albumin in serum and urine were measured by rat albumin radioimmunoassay following separation on m-aminophenylboronate affinity columns.
