Impact of adolescent social Isolation on increased risk for alcohol intake and aversion-resistant drinking in males and females.

RATIONALE: Adverse experiences during adolescence, especially social isolation, increases risk for alcohol use disorders (AUDs). Previous rodent studies of adolescent social isolation (ASI) encompassed all stages of adolescence and/or maintained isolation into adulthood, limiting identification of vulnerable stages of adolescence. Utilizing males only, or combining the sexes, also may have contributed to contradictory findings. OBJECTIVES: Investigate social isolation restricted to discrete adolescent stages in combination with re-socialization and then persistent alcohol drinking. Determine …

Functional Relationships of Binge Drinking and Alcohol-Related Problems With Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms in a Pilot Sample of Veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms and problematic alcohol use (e.g., binge drinking and alcohol-related problems; ARP) commonly co-occur following stressors and traumatic events. Ecological momentary assessment methods can clarify the functional relationships between these conditions. METHODS: Twenty-five trauma-exposed combat veterans with pre-pandemic heavy drinking histories completed three daily smartphone surveys for four weeks, assessing binge drinking, ARP, PTS symptoms, and positive and negative affect. Within-person multi-level models assessed PTS and alcohol relationshi

The effects of marital status, partner drinking, and sex differences on the likelihood of remission from alcohol use disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Marriage is associated with improved health and alcohol outcomes, yet prior research has often combined diverse non-marital relationships, obscuring whether benefits are unique to marriage or a result of strong interpersonal relationships. This study examines whether marriage, compared to cohabitation, exclusive dating, or being single, is associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD) remission and whether this varies by sex and partner drinking. METHOD: Participants were adults from the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism Lifespan Study (n = 1494; 54.4% female) who met

A drink equals how many cigarettes? Equating mortality risks from alcohol and tobacco use in Canada.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify and communicate risk equivalencies for alcohol-and tobacco-attributable mortality by comparing per standard drinks consumed to per number of cigarettes smoked in Canada. METHODS: Alcohol-and tobacco-attributable premature deaths (≤75 years of age) and years of life lost (YLL) were estimated using a lifetime risk modeling approach. Alcohol-attributable death statistics were obtained from the 2023 Canadian Guidance on Alcohol and Health data source. Tobacco-attributable death statistics were derived from the Mortality Population Risk Tool (MPoRT) model. RESULTS: The risk

Relation of Patient's Opinion of Alcohol's Health Effects and Drinking Habits Among Hospitalized Patients With Cardiovascular Disease.

Media reports frequently cite observational studies and meta-analyses to promote the reputed cardiovascular benefits of moderate alcohol consumption; however, it is unclear whether public opinion or drinking behavior align with these reports. We administered an anonymous, single-center, 35-question, cross-sectional survey among patients hospitalized for acute cardiac illnesses from June to September 2019, who were eligible for cardiac rehabilitation. We assessed patient opinions toward alcohol use, perceptions of alcohol's health impact, and role of media in forming these beliefs. We hypothesi

Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase: A Useful Marker of Habitual Drinking in Cases of Alcohol-Associated Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head.

AIMS: Alcohol intake is one of the factors associated with the occurrence of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH), and its epidemiological information regarding alcohol intake depends on patients' self-reports. Therefore, we analysed the efficacy of laboratory tests as an objective diagnostic tool to indicate habitual drinking in patients with alcohol-associated ONFH. METHODS: This study included 109 consecutive patients diagnosed with ONFH who underwent primary hip surgery in our institution between 2010 and 2018. The patients were classified into group AL (alcohol-associated ONFH; n = 2

Longitudinal Impact of Life Events on Adolescent Binge Drinking in the National Consortium on Alcohol and Neurodevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA).

Background: Life events experienced during adolescence are associated with risk and resilience to heavy episodic drinking (HED; i.e. binge drinking). The current study builds on prior research using latent class analysis (LCA) to examine heterogeneity in patterns of adolescent life events at baseline to HED over the course of three years (4 timepoints) as part of the National Consortium on Alcohol and Neurodevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA). Methods: Life event classes were modeled using LCA that characterized NCANDA participants based upon their responses to the Life Events Questionnaire (N

The application of headspace gas chromatographic method for the determination of ethyl alcohol in craft beers, wines and soft drinks.

The increasing interest of consumers in the still-developing craft beer market and the strict tax-related legal regulations concerning alcoholic beverages require precise methods for quality control. Determination of ethyl alcohol concentration was performed in 167 samples of alcoholic beverages (craft beers, soft drinks, wines, and cider). We applied headspace gas chromatography using a dual column/dual flame ionization detector (HS-GC-FID/FID), a technique routinely used in forensic toxicology. The method was linear in range, from 0.01 to 20.0%, with a coefficient of determination of 0.999 (

An Examination of Parental Permissiveness of Alcohol Use and Monitoring, and Their Association with Emerging Adult Drinking Outcomes Across College.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that parents have a significant influence on emerging adult college students' drinking during the first year of college. Limited research has been conducted to address the question of whether parenting later in college continues to matter in a similar manner. The current study utilized a prospective design to identify associations between parental permissiveness toward alcohol use and monitoring behaviors and student drinking outcomes during the first and fourth years of college. METHODS: Participants (N = 1,429) at 3 large public universities completed surveys

Alcohol use in late adolescence and early adulthood: The role of generalized anxiety disorder and drinking to cope motives.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between anxiety and alcohol use is unclear, and moderating factors, such as drinking to cope (DTC) motives, may explain mixed findings. METHODS: Using the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), we examined associations between generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) at age 18 and frequent drinking, frequent bingeing, hazardous drinking, and harmful drinking at ages 18 (unadjusted n = 3462) and 21 (unadjusted n = 2076), in a sample of late adolescent drinkers. Analyses were adjusted for sociodemographic, parental, and adolescent confounders. We also e

Drinking in the morning versus evening: Time-dependent differential effects of acute alcohol administration on the behavior of zebrafish.

Alcohol (ethanol) abuse remains to be a leading cause of medical, including mental, problems throughout the world. Whether alcohol consumption leads to chronic use, and subsequent alcohol dependency and abuse is known to be influenced by the acute effects of this drug. Numerous factors may influence how alcohol administered acutely affects the individual. For example, the mechanisms engaged by drugs of abuse, e.g. cocaine as well as alcohol, have been shown to overlap with those underlying circadian rhythm, and conversely, the effects of these drugs may be dependent upon the time of day of the

Age of Drinking Initiation as a Risk Factor for Alcohol Use Disorder Symptoms is Moderated by ALDH2*2 and Ethnicity.

BACKGROUND: An early age of drinking initiation (ADI) has been associated with increased risk for alcohol use disorders (AUDs), but the consistency of this risk across diverse samples has not been well studied. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the pathway from ADI to AUD symptoms by early adulthood is moderated by ethnicity and possessing an alcohol-metabolizing gene ALDH2*2 variant allele. METHODS: We used multigroup structural equation modeling, including 5 groups split by ethnicity and ALDH2*2, to examine the consistency of the path from ADI to AUD symptoms in 604 Chinese-,

Nature versus intensity of intoxication: Co-ingestion of alcohol and energy drinks and the effect on objective and subjective intoxication.

BACKGROUND: We report a series of studies examining the effect of alcohol mixed with energy drinks (AmEDs) versus alcohol on objective intoxication (breath alcohol concentration; BrAC), intensity, and nature of intoxication. We also aimed to disentangle the role of energy drink (ED) ingredients in any effects. METHOD: Three within-subject double-blind placebo-controlled studies measured BrAC, subjective intoxication and impairment ('intensity of intoxication'), stimulation and sedation ('nature of intoxication') following administration of ED, Cola, Caffeine+Sugar, and Placebo with alcohol (S

Mixing drink and drugs: 'Underclass' politics, the recovery agenda and the partial convergence of English alcohol and drugs policy.

Alcohol policy and illicit drugs policy are typically presented as separate and different in academic discussion. This is understandable, to a degree, as the criminal law upholds a 'great regulatory divide' (Seddon, 2010: 56) separating the licit trade in alcohol from the illicit trade in substances classified as either class A, B or C under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. This paper takes a different stance. In doing so, it draws upon Berridge's (2013) argument that policies governing various psychoactive substances have been converging since the mid-twentieth century and seeks to elaborate it

Continuous delivery of naltrexone and nalmefene leads to tolerance in reducing alcohol drinking and to supersensitivity of brain opioid receptors.

Opioid antagonist treatments reduce alcohol drinking in rodent models and in alcohol-dependent patients, with variable efficacy across different studies. These treatments may suffer from the development of tolerance and opioid receptor supersensitivity, as suggested by preclinical models showing activation of these processes during and after subchronic high-dose administration of the short-acting opioid antagonist naloxone. In the present study, we compared equipotent low and moderate daily doses of naltrexone and nalmefene, two opioid antagonists in the clinical practice for treatment of alco…
