Role of aggressivity on reactivity and craving before and after cue exposure in recently detoxified alcoholics: results from an experimental study.

The role of aggressivity and cue exposure in induction of craving were investigated in a clinical setting. Thirty abstinent alcoholic patients were divided into a low and a high aggressive group based on scores on the physical aggression subscale of the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory and exposed to alcohol cues. Craving was measured by means of the Alcohol Craving Questionnaire (ACQ) and Visual Analogue Scales (VAS). Important findings are: (1) main effects of aggressivity on 'emotionality', 'purposefulness' and 'expectancy' of ACQ were very significant; (2) on 'drinking intention' and 'cravi

Increased REM sleep density at admission predicts relapse by three months in primary alcoholics with a lifetime diagnosis of secondary depression.

BACKGROUND: Having previously reported that 3-month relapse was associated with increased admission REM pressure in nondepressed primary alcoholics, we hypothesized that baseline polysomnography would predict outcome in primary alcoholics with a lifetime diagnosis of secondary depression. METHODS: Twenty-one primary alcoholics with secondary depression received polysomnography and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale during the first and fourth weeks of a 1-month inpatient alcohol treatment program. Exclusion criteria included serious illness, current major alcohol withdrawal symptoms, other …

Neuronal degeneration in rat cerebrocortical and olfactory regions during subchronic "binge" intoxication with ethanol: possible explanation for olfactory deficits in alcoholics.

Severe, repetitive ("binge") ethanol intoxication in adult rats (intragastric delivery 3 times daily for 4 days in a modification of the Maj … of the degeneration provides a neuropathological basis for the olfactory memory deficits in chronic alcoholics. In highly intoxicated rats, argyrophilia was most extensive among hippocampal dentate gyrus granule cells, pyramidal neurons in layer 3 of the entorhinal cortex, and olfactory nerve terminals in the olfactory bulb. Degenerating pyramidal neurons we …

A hypothesis linking hypoglycemia, hyperuricemia, lactic acidemia, and reduced gluconeogenesis in alcoholics to inactivation of glucose-6-phosphatase activity by acetaldehyde.

Preliminary data have been obtained indicating that glucose-6-phosphatase is inactivated upon preincubation with 447 and 224 mM acetaldehyde for 30 min at room temperature, resulting in a loss of 67% and 33% of the original activity, respectively. The reaction with acetaldehyde is rapid because 44% of the enzymic activity is lost in 5 min. Comparable quantities of ethanol inhibit the enzyme to the extent of 11%, indicating a very slight, statistically insignificant organic solvent effect. Because chronic alcoholics present a clinical picture of hypoglycemia, hyperuricemia, reduced gluconeogene…

Mortality rate of alcoholic liver disease and risk of hospitalization for alcoholic liver cirrhosis, alcoholic hepatitis and alcoholic liver failure in Australia between 1993 and 2005.

BACKGROUND: Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is an important contributor to the total burden of alcohol-related harm; however, the morbidity of different types of ALD in Australia has not been described. The aim of this study was to investigate recent trends in hospital admission rates among alcoholic liver cirrhosis, alcoholic hepatic failure and alcoholic hepatitis in Australia, as well as the mortality of ALD. METHOD: This is a population-based cohort study including the total 15+ years Australian population. Data were obtained from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Australian Insti

The Role of Alcohol Expectancies in the Association Between Behavioral Economic Alcohol Demand, Relative Reinforcement, and Alcohol Problems.

Alcohol consumption and related problems are common among college students. Prior research links behavioral economic (BE) constructs of alcohol demand and relative reinforcement (RR), and alcohol expectancies, with alcohol consumption/problems. However, research has yet to examine the associations between BE, expectancy theory, and alcohol use outcomes. In this study, college students (n = 287) completed a single online survey assessing demand, RR, alcohol expectancies, and alcohol use/problems. We examined the cross-sectional indirect association of expectancies and drinking on the relationsh

Diagnosis and treatment of acute alcohol intoxication and alcohol withdrawal syndrome: position paper of the Italian Society on Alcohol.

The chronic use of alcohol can lead to the onset of an alcohol use disorder (AUD). About 50% of subjects with an AUD may develop alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) when they reduce or discontinue their alcohol consumption and, in 3-5% of them, convulsions and delirium tremens (DTs), representing life-threatening complications, may occur. Unfortunately, few physicians are adequately trained in identifying and treating AWS. The Italian Society on Alcohol has, therefore, implemented a task force of specialists to draw up recommendations for the treatment of AWS with the following main results: (1)

A new view of alcohol metabolism and alcoholism--role of the high-Km Class III alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH3).

The conventional view is that alcohol metabolism is carried out by ADH1 (Class I) in the liver. However, it has been suggested that another pathway plays an important role in alcohol metabolism, especially when the level of blood ethanol is high or when drinking is chronic. Over the past three decades, vigorous attempts to identify the enzyme responsible for the non-ADH1 pathway have focused on the microsomal ethanol oxidizing system (MEOS) and catalase, but have failed to clarify their roles in systemic alcohol metabolism. Recently, using ADH3-null mutant mice, we demonstrated that ADH3 (Clas

Alcohol-aggression expectancies and dispositional rumination moderate the effect of alcohol consumption on alcohol-related aggression and hostility.

Alcohol consumption increases aggression, but only in some drinkers. This study extends previous work to show how expectancies for alcohol-induced aggression and dispositional rumination moderate the link between alcohol consumption and alcohol-related aggression and hostility in a sample of 285 men and women. Alcohol-aggression expectancies and quantity of alcohol interacted to predict alcohol-related hostility and aggression. Trait rumination moderated the effect of alcohol consumption on aggressive acts. Finally, women who ruminated were more likely to report alcohol-related aggression than

Alcohol and the Eye.

In this article, we present a review of ocular conditions related to alcohol consumption. A search of the literature published from 1952 to March 2020 was performed. The titles and abstracts were screened and the eligible studies were selected. PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge database, Scopus, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched. We categorized the relationship between alcohol intake and ocular conditions by the type of ocular exposure to alcohol. Accordingly, ocular findings following acute alcohol intoxication, optic neuropathy following methanol toxicity, congenital conditions relat

Alcohol and the Brain.

Alcohol works on the brain to produce its desired effects, e.g., sociability and intoxication, and hence the brain is an important organ for exploring subsequent harms. These come in many different forms such as the consequences of damage during intoxication, e.g., from falls and fights, damage from withdrawal, damage from the toxicity of alcohol and its metabolites and altered brain structure and function with implications for behavioral processes such as craving and addiction. On top of that are peripheral factors that compound brain damage such as poor diet, vitamin deficiencies leading to

Alcohol and hepatocarcinogenesis.

An excessive alcohol intake may result in fatty liver, acute/chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and lead to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The aim of this review is to clarify the present condition and the mechanisms of alcohol-related hepatocarcinogenesis and clinical risk factors for alcohol-related HCC. There are several possible mechanisms through which alcohol may induce hepatocarcinogenesis, including the mutagenic effects of acetaldehyde toxicity through the formation of protein and DNA adducts and the production of reactive oxygen species due to the excessive hepatic deposition of iron, ch

[Alcoholic hepatitis].

Alcoholic hepatitis is a syndrome defined primarily by the clinical onset of jaundice in patients with a concomitant heavy consumption of alcoholic beverages. This pathology is managed by alcohol withdrawal with a 30-day survival rate of 90 %. For patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis, with a Maddrey score greater than 32 (taking into account bilirubin and prothrombin time), treatment with corticosteroids is discussed provided that a possible infection can be sufficiently excluded or adequately managed. The administration of corticosteroids is continued for 28 days if the Lille score, calcu

[Alcoholic hepatitis].

Alcoholic hepatitis. In a context of chronic alcoholic intoxication, the diagnosis of alcoholic hepatitis (AH) relies on a histological definition. When it is symptomatic, AH is a clinical syndrome associating jaundice, moderate fever, sensitivity of the right upper quadrant, loss of appetite and signs of hepatocellular insufficiency in severe forms. Typical biological tests show a moderate cytolysis with predominant AST, a high level of ãGT, and leukocytosis on neutrophils. Rising level of bilirubin and INR rates and low TP ratio are markers of severity of the disease. Regardless, the initial
