Full details of the total syntheses of the initially reported and revised structures of the neuroprotective agent palmyrolide A are reported. The key macrocyclization step was achieved using a sequential ring-closing metathesis/olefin isomerization reaction. Furthermore, the total synthesis of the related macrolide (2S)-sanctolide A is reported. The synthesis used key elements from the synthesis of palmyrolide A, including the RCM/olefin isomerization sequence. The synthetic work described herein serves to facilitate the assignment of stereochemistry of the natural product sanctolide A and dem

The oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of propane to propylene by supported vanadia catalysts has received much attention in recent years, but different reactivity trends have been reported for this catalytic reaction system. In the present investigation, the origin of these differing trends are investigated with synthesis of supported V/SiO2, V/TiO2, and V/Al2O3 catalysts prepared with three different vanadium oxide precursors (2-propanol/vanadyl triisopropoxide [VO(O-Pri)3] (VTI), oxalic acid/ammonium metavanadate [NH4VO3] (AMV), and toluene/vanadyl acetylacetonate [VO(C5H7O2)2] (VAA)) in order

The construction and transformation of metal-carbon (M-C) bonds constitute the central themes of organometallic chemistry. Most of the work in this field has focused on traditional M-C bonds involving tetravalent carbon: relatively little attention has been paid to the chemistry of nontraditional metal-carbon (M-C(cage)) bonds, such as carborane cages, in which the carbon is hypervalent. We therefore initiated a research program to study the chemistry of these nontraditional M-C(cage) bonds, with a view toward developing synthetic methodologies for functional carborane derivatives. In this Acc

The gas-phase CN + propene reaction is investigated using synchrotron photoionization mass spectrometry (SPIMS) over the 9.8-11.5 eV photon energy range. Experiments are conducted at room temperature in 4 Torr of He buffer gas. The CN + propene addition reaction produces two distinct product mass channels, C(3)H(3)N and C(4)H(5)N, corresponding to CH(3) and H elimination, respectively. The CH(3) and H elimination channels are measured to have branching fractions of 0.59 ± 0.15 and 0.41 ± 0.10, respectively. The absolute photoionization cross sections between 9.8 and 11.5 eV are measured for th

A polar olefin metathesis catalyst that bears a quaternary ammonium group was prepared from commercially available reagents. The electron-withdrawing quaternary ammonium group not only activates the Ru catalyst electronically but at the same time makes the catalyst more hydrophilic. The catalyst can therefore be efficiently used both in traditional media, such as dichloromethane and toluene, as well as in technical-grade alcohols, alcohol-water mixtures and in neat water. Various metathesis reactions, including ring-closing, cross- and enyne metathesis, were conducted in these solvents in the

[structure: see text] The monomeric counterpart of marinomycin A, an antitumor-antibiotic marine natural product, was synthesized efficiently in 11 steps from the commercially available ethyl (R)-(-)-3-hydroxybutyrate. The strategy was highlighted by a crucial regio- and stereoselective cross-metathesis to form the C20-C21 double bond, enantioselective allyltitanations to control the configuration of the C17, C23, and C25 stereogenic centers, and a stereocontrolled construction of the tetraene moiety based on an original Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons olefination followed by a Pd-catalyzed cross-coup

This communication describes a significant expansion in the scope of Stille reactions of Csp3-X electrophiles, specifically, that Pd/P(t-Bu)2Me catalyzes the room-temperature cross-coupling of a variety of functionalized, beta-hydrogen-containing alkyl bromides with an array of alkenyltin reagents. The structure of the phosphine (P(t-Bu)2Me) is well suited for facilitating oxidative addition and avoiding beta-hydride elimination, while the fluoride serves to activate the tin reagent for efficient transmetalation.

Herein, we report a halogen-bond-assisted catalyst-free protocol for the difluoroalkylation of alkenes via a radical Truce-Smiles rearrangement. It was found that the amine plays a dual role as a halogen-bond donor as well as a precursor of α-amino alkyl radicals, which act as reductants. Key advantages of this protocol include mild reaction conditions, broad substrate compatibility, and the potential for further applications in the synthesis of pharmaceutically relevant molecules.

Hydrosilylation of β-alkyl- and aryl-substituted styrenes with arylsilanes faces challenges of the lack of an active catalyst, difficulty in controlling regioselectivity, and overcoming side reactions. Herein, we report the hydrosilylation of β-alkyl and aryl styrenes with PhSiH3 by the bridged pincer homodinuclear lanthanide metal complexes, which displayed high activity in the hydrosilylation of internal alkenes with PhSiH3, affording the corresponding products in moderate to high yields with excellent regioselectivity under mild conditions.

The tBuOK-mediated protocol enables efficient access to a variety of substituted azetidinols from N-formylimides and Seyferth-Gilbert reagent through an unprecedented [3 + 1] tandem nucleophilic addition/anionic migration/cyclization/reduction process. The transformation proceeds under mild conditions, features a broad substrate scope, and exhibits excellent functional group tolerance including heteroaromatic scaffolds, alkenes, alkynes, ethers, and esters. Importantly, the protocol is readily scalable and applicable to the modification of complex drug molecules.

Tailor-made OEG-ketone copolymers were synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and evaluated as catalysts for the epoxidation of several alkenes under mild conditions. The study highlights the influence of the copolymer composition on dioxirane intermediate formation and on the overall efficiency of the process. The incorporation of oligo(ethylene glycol) side chains promotes efficient extraction and isolation of the epoxide while enabling ketone recycling through RAFT polymerization.

A photoredox strategy for synthesizing diverse polyfluoroalkyl-substituted N-heterocycles has been reported. Through in situ halogen exchange for activation of polyfluoroalkyl bromides, a photocatalytic cascade cyclization using 4-bromo-3,3,4,4-tetrafluorobutene-1 (BTFB) as the polyfluoroalkyl radical source is described for the first time. It introduces polyfluoroalkyl and terminal alkenes into N-heterocycles in a single operation without metal catalysts or redox reagents, featuring broad substrate scope and late-stage functionalization applicability.

Herein, we report the rhodium-catalyzed Z-alkenyl transfer from tertiary allylic alcohols to aryl trifluoromethyl ketones, which provided an efficient way of preparation of trifluoromethyl-containing Z-allylic alcohols via β-Z-alkenyl elimination. The key Z-alkenyl-rhodium species were generated with a high degree of stereochemical retention. This reaction featured a broad substrate scope and good functional tolerance and would offer a fascinating approach for the synthesis of Z-alkenes.

An efficient method for the acid-catalyzed carbosulfenylation of 1,6-diene has been achieved employing N-(aryl/alkylthio)succinimides as a thiolating reagent. The reaction involves the generation of an episulfonium ion followed by intramolecular trapping with alkenes, which offers access to diverse thiolated dehydropiperidines in good yield. In addition, the synthesis of dihydropyran and cyclohexene derivatives, as well as the conversion of the arylthiol moiety to useful functional groups, were also demonstrated.
