Additional evidence from pathology findings is presented in support of the proposition that amnestic confusional phenomena, induced by electrical stimulation of the hippocampus in epileptic patients and resembling transient global amnesia, are related to unilateral (dominant hemisphere) cerebral mechanisms.

From 8 original observations and from an overview of published cases, the authors make out two kinds of mental disorders connected with benzodiazepines use: 1) transient global anterograde amnesia; 2) amnesic complex automatism. Consequences for forensic medicine are finally investigated.

Spreading depression (SD), a transient reversible phenomenon with characteristic ionic, metabolic and hemodynamic changes, has been known for over 55 years. A vast number of studies into this mysterious experimental event provides evidence for SD involvement in brain pathophysiology. There is sufficient evidence to admit that SD plays an important role in some clinical disorders including migraine, cerebrovascular diseases, head injury and transient global amnesia. However, the exact pathophysiological mechanisms of SD are unknown and further studies are needed to demonstrate the involvement o

AIM: Among main symptoms of the amnestic syndrome we can distinguish: short-term and long-term memory deterioration, deficiency of the effectiveness of learning, the anterograde amnesia and the retrograde amnesia, lack of the orientation in the place and in the time and confabulations. The aim of the study is to introduce the unknown tool of cognitive assessment named Montreal Assessment Cognitive (MoCA). The authors want to indicate the diagnostic accuracy of the scale in the examination of the amnestic patient.
METHOD: In the neuropsychological examination of the amnestic patient, the Montr

Transient global amnesia (TGA) was formerly supposed to have an epileptic origin thought unlikely by more recent authors. Further, epileptic seizures rarely present transient memory dysfunction as prominent symptom. These particular cases of which we report here three examples were previously identified as epileptic amnesic attacks (EAA). They have uniform clinical characteristics quite different from TGA and respond favorably to antiepileptic therapy. The features differentiating these two conditions are discussed. The authors suggest that an epileptic origin should be considered in patients

This case report describes the anesthetic management of a 67-year-old who underwent a catheter based pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) of long-standing, persistent atrial fibrillation. When the patient awoke from the 6.5 hour procedure, he was found to have a transient retrograde and anterograde amnesia that persisted for 18-24 hours postoperatively. This is a unique instance of global amnesia following a cardiac ablation procedure under prolonged general anesthesia. This case study highlights important topics in postoperative cognitive deficits including the differential diagnosis, risk factors,

A detailed critique of the literature on focal retrograde amnesia is provided. Some of the cases commonly cited in this literature had, in fact, severely impaired anterograde memory, most often involving visuospatial material. Other cases showed poor anterograde memory in more moderate or subtle form, begging the question of whether "like" had really been compared with "like" across the retrograde and anterograde domains: there may be alternative explanations for the observed patterns of performance. One suggestion is that these patients suffer an impairment of long-term consolidation, an attr

A 67-year-old woman was diagnosed with transient global amnesia having presented with an abrupt and temporary disruption in her memory function. Her symptom onset came shortly after a visit to her general practitioner where she had performed bedside spirometry. Following symptom resolution, she was discharged home with reassurance.

The differential diagnosis of psychogenic vs. organic amnestic syndromes may cause difficulty in certain cases. Here, we report a case of psychogenic amnesia which occurred after alcohol intoxication and mild head trauma. The initial memory deficit was very severe consisting of near-complete retrograde amnesia and anterograde amnesia covering 12 hours. The deficits resolved within a 4-week period of time. Brain CT and MRI scans revealed two circumscribed lesions of the right temporal lobe which were interpreted as old posttraumatic lesions. To ascertain the diagnosis, diffusion-weighted MR ima

Aortic dissection is a frequently devastating diagnosis classically associated with severe chest pain.We present a case of painless aortic dissection with anterograde amnesia. An 84-year-old man was brought to the emergency department by ambulance, when his wife noted that he developed acute onset complete loss of short-term memory. Medical history was notable for a 4.5-cm fusiform thoracic aortic root aneurysm. On arrival,he denied pain or syncope. On examination, he was mildly hypotensive(110/59 mm Hg); and there were no murmurs, pulse deficits, or focal neurologic deficits. During his stay,

We describe 30 patients with "epileptic amnesic syndrome" (EAS) with adult-senile onset of a severe memory complaint that started before or at the same time as stereotyped seizures with only short loss of contact and automatisms. Because the seizures were not obvious or disturbing, they remained undiagnosed for a long time. Twenty-three patients also had attacks of transient anteroretrograde amnesia after the seizures: "epileptic amnesic attacks" (EAA). These are similar to attacks of transient global amnesia but are more frequent, shorter, accompanied by clear-cut clinical epileptic manifesta

INTRODUCTION: Fabry disease (FD) is a rare, X-linked lysosomal storage disorder with multiorgan involvement. FD is caused by a partial or total deficit of α-galactosidase A enzyme, which is responsible for the accumulation of glycosphingolipids in a variety of cell types. Neurological complications include central nervous system involvement with cerebrovascular disease, peripheral neuropathy, and autonomic dysfunction.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 47-year-old man with an atypical neurological presentation of FD, characterized by 48-hour consciousness alteration with amnesia, resemblin

Thirteen patients with "epileptic amnesic syndrome" (EAS) presented with adult-senile onset of a severe memory complaint that started before or at the same time as seizures. All were diagnosed as temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). The seizures were stereotyped, with only short loss of contact and oral automatisms, and because they were not obvious or disturbing, they remained underdiagnosed for a long time. Nine cases also presented attacks of transient anteroretrograde amnesia after the seizures--called "epileptic amnesic attacks" (EAA)--during which the patients were able to perform complex actio

Transient recurrent confusional and stuporous states of nonepileptic origin are clearly less frequent than epileptic ones. They are relatively common in diseases of disturbed vigilance, like narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnolence, and sleep apnea. These patients often suffer from attacks of hypovigilance, characterized by altered awareness, automatic behaviour and partial or complete amnesia for the attack. Because of the memory 'black outs' and the frequently associated hypnagogic hallucinations, the patients behave inappropriately and often appear confused. Confusional states also typically

We report a case of transient global amnesia (TGA), in a right-handed woman, which was due to a cerebral venous thrombosis. In our knowledge it is the first case reported. MRI and SPECT revealed the existence of a dysfunction in the right internal temporal region. Such a localization leads us to discuss the specialisation of each hippocampus.

We describe three patients exhibiting an acute reversible amnesia characterised by an impaired recollection of past events with preserved anterograde memory, thus consistent with a focal retrograde amnesia (FRA). This occurred after variable events: state of fugue, road accident, post-traumatic headache. Retrograde amnesia affected autobiographical memory so severely as to cover all of the patients' lives and to erase knowledge of their own identity. The retrieval of public events was variably affected, ranging from normality to severe impairment. No lesions were found on neuroimaging, and neu

We report the clinical and EEG study of three migraine patients who presented with peculiar clinical phenomena related to migraine attack. The first case is a transient global amnesia that followed a classic migraine status. The second is a confusional state that complicated a classic migraine attack. The third is a complex attack with combined features of migraine and epilepsy.

Mitral valve prolapse has been reported to be associated with a variety of neurologic disorders, including cerebral ischemia, transient global amnesia, migraine, autonomic dysfunction, and psychiatric disease. The evidence supporting these associations and possible pathogenetic mechanisms are discussed. Some neurologic disorders may be direct complications of mitral valve prolapse, while others may occur as part of an underlying genetic defect or common link.

Several neurological conditions, including transient global amnesia (TGA), may present an isolated sudden-onset temporary amnestic symptom. TGA is a benign, self-remitting neurological condition associated with hippocampal dysfunction. Meanwhile, certain other neurological conditions, such as cerebral ischemic stroke and hippocampal epilepsy, require appropriate therapeutic interventions. An isolated temporary amnestic symptom caused by extra-limbic brain regions has not been widely reported yet. We report a case of a 37-year-old female with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who suddenly deve
