Delayed Diagnosis of Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Presenting as Abnormal Uterine Bleeding: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare multisystem genetic disorder characterized by the development of hamartomatous lesions in multiple organs. Although neurologic and dermatologic manifestations commonly lead to diagnosis during childhood, some patients remain undiagnosed until adulthood because of atypical presentations. We report the case of a 28-year-old Ethiopian woman with a longstanding seizure disorder who presented with a two-year history of abnormal uterine bleeding. Physical examination revealed facial angiofibromas and hypomelanotic macules. Further evaluation demonstrated bi…

A Case of TSC2/PKD1 Contiguous Gene Deletion Syndrome With Proven Kidney Pathology.

TSC2/PKD1 contiguous gene deletion syndrome (PKDTS) is characterized by poor renal prognosis. We encountered a female patient with a history of facial angiofibromas since childhood who developed seizures and was subsequently diagnosed with tuberous sclerosis complex. The patient later progressed to kidney failure requiring replacement therapy at 23 years of age. Imaging studies showed polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and angiomyolipoma (AML), followed by renal hemorrhage in both kidneys. Genetic testing showed a heterozygous deletion involving the TSC2 and PKD1 genes on chromosome 16, confirmin…

Update on nonmalignant lesions of the inferior turbinate.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The inferior turbinates are routinely examined by otolaryngologists on anterior rhinoscopy and nasal endoscopy. Most lesions of the inferior turbinate are benign but can often be confused with malignancy. This review highlights the broad differential of nonmalignant lesions of the inferior turbinates and their management. RECENT FINDINGS: A variety of infectious, inflammatory, neoplastic, and vascular lesions may affect the inferior turbinates. The most common nonmalignant lesions of the sinonasal region are nasal polyps, inverted papillomas, hemangiomas, and angiofibromas.…

Expression of the CTCFL Gene during Mouse Embryogenesis Causes Growth Retardation, Postnatal Lethality, and Dysregulation of the Transforming Growth Factor β Pathway.

CTCFL, a paralog of CTCF, also known as BORIS (brother of regulator of imprinted sites), is a testis-expressed gene whose function is largely unknown. Its product is a cancer testis antigen (CTA), and it is often expressed in tumor cells and also seen in two benign human vascular malformations, juvenile angiofibromas and infantile hemangiomas. To understand the function of Ctcfl, we created tetracycline-inducible Ctcfl transgenic mice. We show that Ctcfl expression during embryogenesis results in growth retardation, eye malformations, multiorgan pathologies, vascular defects, and neonatal deat…

Sinonasal hemangiopericytoma.

UNLABELLED: Hemangiopericytoma (HPC) is a rare entity that is found in only 1% of vascular tumours. Only 5% of HPC are localized in the nasal cavity or paranasal sinuses. The exact incidence is not stated in the literature. CASE REPORT: A case of a 76-year-old female patient is presented. As she suffered from stroke a cranial CT was performed and the tumour of the paranasal sinuses was diagnosed incidentally. The patient had a history of paranasal sinus surgery under local anaesthesia twenty years ago. The former histological diagnosis was stated as "angiofibroma with signs of proliferation "…

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 with multiple leiomyomas linked to a novel mutation in the MEN1 gene.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is an autosomal dominantly inherited syndrome. MEN1 is characterized by the presence of functioning and nonfunctioning tumors or hyperplasia of the pituitary gland, parathyroid glands, and pancreatic islet cells. In addition, MEN1 carriers can have adrenal or thyroid tumors and non-endocrine tumors, such as lipomas, angiofibromas, and leiomyomas. Although leiomyoma is not a major component of MEN1, it is thought to occur more frequently than expected. However, there has been no report of a case of MEN1 with leiomyoma in Korea so far. This report descr…

Identification of a de novo TSC2 variant in a Han-Chinese family with tuberous sclerosis complex.

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant disorder with a variety of clinical findings. Variants in the TSC complex subunit 1 gene (TSC1) or the TSC complex subunit 2 gene (TSC2) are responsible for TSC. METHODS: Physical examinations, computed tomography scans, and light microscopy analyses were performed on the TSC patient from a Han-Chinese pedigree. Whole-exome sequencing combined with Sanger sequencing were performed on the family members. RESULTS: The TSC patient showed typical clinical features, including facial angiofibromas, gingival fibromas, a shagreen …
