Expert knowledge elicitation to determine the relative importance of potentially foodborne parasitic diseases in Armenia.

Reliable prioritization of foodborne parasitic diseases is challenging in settings where routine surveillance and attribution data are limit … xoplasmosis, and trichinellosis formed a moderate-priority group. Cryptosporidiosis, taeniasis, and anisakiasis were assigned low priority. Professional background and geographic region had only minor influence on ranking outcomes, indicating strong national consensus. The results demonstrate a distinct hierarchy of the opinions of experts regarding foodborne …

An investigation of the prevalence and diversity of Anisakis in China: marine food safety implications.

Anisakis can cause Anisakiasis in humans if raw or undercooked fish is consumed. Symptoms of infection may include vomiting, acute abdominal symptoms, or allergies. In this study, we collected 187 commercially available marine fish from the Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and South China Sea. Among them, 79 were found positive containing 520 Anisakis worms. The average prevalence rate was found 42% in this investigation. Ninety-two worms from different sea areas were selected and analyzed for identification, revealing the presence of five different species, which are Anisakis pegreffii, Hysterothy…

Cross-reactivity between Anisakis spp. and wasp venom allergens.

BACKGROUND: Anisakiasis is caused by the consumption of raw or undercooked fish or cephalopods parasitized by live L3 larvae of nematode Anisakis spp. Larvae anchor to stomach mucosa releasing excretion/secretion products which contain the main allergens. It has been described that nematode larvae release venom allergen-like proteins among their excretion/secretion products. We investigated potential cross-reactivity between Anisakis and wasp venom allergens. METHODS: Two groups of 25 patients each were studied: wasp venom- and Anisakis-allergic patients. Sera from patients were tested by Imm…

Exploring the exoproteome of the parasitic nematode Anisakis simplex (s. s.) and its impact on the human host - an in vitro cross-talk proteomic approach.

INTRODUCTION: Anisakis simplex sensu stricto (s. s.) is one of the most widespread parasitic nematodes of marine organisms, with humans as accidental hosts. While many studies have explored nematode biology and host interactions, the role of extracellular vesicles (EVs) as signaling molecules in parasitic nematodes is less understood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Therefore, the proteins present in the EVs of A. simplex (s. s.) (Anis-EVs) were identified. In addition, a cross-talk proteomic approach was used to identify differentially regulated proteins (DRPs) in the proteome of the human intestinal

Comparative study of Taqman-based qPCR assay for the detection of Anisakis simplex and Pseudoterranova decipiens.

Anisakidosis is a foodborne parasitic infection caused by the consumption of raw or uncooked seafood that contains third stage larvae from the Anisakidae family. This infection has been observed across the globe, with a particularly high prevalence in South Korea and Japan. Consequently, there is a necessity to compare and analyze the optimal detection methods with a view to preventing Anisakis outbreaks. In this study, a species-specific Taqman-based qPCR method was developed for the detection of the internal transcribed spacer region and mtDNA genes of Anisakis simplex and Pseudoterranova de

Presence of Anisakis pegreffii in farmed sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) commercialized in Southern Italy: A first report.

We examined 151 European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) samples from farms and fish markets of Sicily (Southern Italy) for Anisakidae larvae detection. All the samples were examined by visual inspection and modified chloro-peptic digestion. Two nematode larvae were found in the viscera of only one European sea bass sample from a farm located in Greece (FAO 37.3), giving a total prevalence of infestation of 0.7%. No other parasites were found after chloro-peptic digestion of the samples. The larvae were morphologically ascribed, at genus level, to morphotypes I and molecularly identified as

Anisakis haemoglobin is a main antigen inducing strong and prolonged immunoreactions in rats.

Anisakis simplex larvae are well known to cause gastrointestinal and allergic manifestations after ingestion of parasitized raw or undercooked seafood. The antibody recognition dynamics against the components of Anisakis larval antigen after primary and re-infection with Anisakis live larvae remain unclear. For this study, immunoblot analyses of serum IgG, IgE, and IgM against Anisakis larval somatic extract were performed in rats that had been orally inoculated with A. simplex live larvae. Multiple antigen fractions were recognized after primary infection. Their reaction was enhanced after re

Validation of a commercial kit aimed to the detection of pathogenic anisakid nematodes in fish products.

Anisakids are parasitic nematodes responsible for a zoonosis that occurs following the ingestion of fish and fish products infected with larvae belonging to the genera Anisakis and Pseudoterranova. Rarely Contracaecum is found in association with gastric/intestinal illness, while Hysterothylacium is commonly considered not pathogenic. Although Real Time PCR assays have been recently used with the aim to detect and quantify these parasites in food products, methods applied did not undergo through extensive validation process, a feature highly desirable or mandatory in the case of testing labora

Larvicidal constituents of Zingiber officinale (ginger) against Anisakis simplex.

In this study, we investigated the anthelmintic activity of [10]-shogaol, [6]-shogaol, [10]-gingerol and [6]-gingerol, compounds isolated from the roots of Zingiber officinale L., Zingiberaceae (ginger), against Anisakis simplex. The above compounds kill or reduce spontaneous movement in A. simplex larvae. The maximum lethal efficacy of [10]-shogaol and [10]-gingerol was approximately 80% and 100%, respectively. We further examined the time course of compound-induced loss of mobility in A. simplex. The results showed that various concentrations of [10]-shogaol, [6]-shogaol, [10]-gingerol and [

Multiple acute parasitization by Anisakis simplex.

Hypersensitivity to Anisakis is an increasingly prominent medical problem throughout the world, due to a better understanding of diseases induced by parasites and to modern culinary habits of eating raw or undercooked fish. We describe the case of a patient who presented epigastric pain, wheals, erythema, and pruritus 3 hours after the ingestion of fish. More than 200 larvae were obtained by endoscopy. However, the patient only developed an immune response with specific immunoglobulin E and eosinophilia peaking at day 18 and decreasing during the 17-month follow-up. Only eosinophilia reached n

Interleukin-4 production in BALB/c mice immunized with Anisakis simplex.

We investigated the interleukin (IL-4) levels in BALB/c mice immunized with Anisakis extract in single or multiple doses and in mice orally infected with a larva. From animals immunized maximum responses were obtained with the multiple doses with an only IL-4 peak. Conversely, in the mice inoculated with a larva per os, the IL-4 levels showed two peaks of different rates.

A novel nuclear marker and development of an ARMS-PCR assay targeting the metallopeptidase 10 (nas 10) locus to identify the species of the Anisakis simplex (s. l.) complex (Nematoda, Anisakidae).

The genus Anisakis represents one of the most widespread groups of ascaridoid nematodes in the marine ecosystem. Three closely related taxa are recognized in the Anisakis simplex (s. l.) complex: A. pegreffii, A. simplex (s. s.) and A. berlandi. They are widely distributed in populations of their intermediate/paratenic hosts (fish and squids) and definitive hosts (cetaceans). A novel nuclear gene locus, metallopeptidase 10 (nas 10) (451 bp), was sequenced and validated on a total of 219 specimens of the three species of Anisakis, collected in fish and cetacean hosts from allopatric areas inclu

Anisakidosis of the sigmoid colon disguising as metastatic carcinoma: a case report and review of the literature.

Intestinal anisakidosis is a rare nematode infestation caused by the ingestion of larvae-infected raw or undercooked fish. Most cases are incidentally diagnosed during surgery for other reasons. We present such a case of anisakid larvae seen in a patient's sigmoid colon resected for adenocarcinoma, where a subserosal nodule caused by the inflammatory reaction to the worm was presumed to be a lymph node involved by metastatic tumor. With the increasing popularity of raw fish consumption, the incidence of this parasitic infection is bound to increase, requiring surgical pathologists to be cogniz
