Return to sport decisions after an acute lateral ankle sprain injury: introducing the PAASS framework-an international multidisciplinary consensus.

BACKGROUND: Despite being the most commonly incurred sports injury with a high recurrence rate, there are no guidelines to inform return to sport (RTS) decisions following acute lateral ankle sprain injuries. We aimed to develop a list of assessment items to address this gap. METHODS: We used a three-round Delphi survey approach to develop consensus of opinion among 155 globally diverse health professionals working in elite field or court sports. This involved surveys that were structured in question format with both closed-response and open-response options. We asked panellists to indicate t

An unusual case of chronic lateral foot pain following ankle inversion injury: osteoid osteoma of the tarsal cuboid bone.

Osteoid osteomas are common benign tumors normally seen in the femur, tibia, and spine. They rarely are seen in the foot. We present an unusual case of osteoid osteoma of the cuboid in a 26-year-old man. This was initially thought to be an ankle sprain, as its first presentation was after a sporting injury. It was then treated as an infection before the true diagnosis--that of osteoid osteoma--was obtained.

Effect of increased excursion of the ankle on the severity of acute eccentric contraction-induced strain injury in the gastrocnemius: an in vivo rat study.

BACKGROUND: Although muscle strain injury models are frequently employed, highly invasive procedures, including surgical intervention, are typically used to produce these models. In this study, a minimally invasive model of acute strain injury was produced with a single eccentric contraction. HYPOTHESIS: The authors tested whether the severity of strain injury in the in vivo gastrocnemius depends on the excursion of the ankle. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: Animals were randomly assigned to 2 groups: a small range of motion group (90-105 degrees, n = 10) and a large ran

Outcomes of Deltoid Ligament Repair in Surgically Treated Weber C Ankle Fractures With Deltoid Injury: A Retrospective Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: The indications for deltoid ligament (DL) repair in ankle fractures with widened medial clear space (MCS) remain controversial. Many authors report no difference in long-term functional outcomes, whereas others report persistent MCS widening and higher malreduction rates without DL repair. This study compares DL repair to no repair exclusively in surgically treated bimalleolar equivalent Weber C fibula fractures. METHODS: This was a retrospective chart review of surgically treated Weber C lateral malleolus fractures with syndesmosis stabilization, with associated DL injury (bimall

Validation of the estimated Effect of Ankle Foot Orthoses on Spinal Cord Injury Gait Using Subject-Adjusted Musculoskeletal Models.

Simulation of assistive devices on pathological gait through musculoskeletal models offers the potential and advantages of estimating the effect of the device in several biomechanical variables and the device characteristics ahead of manufacturing. In this study, we introduce a novel musculoskeletal modelling approach to simulate the biomechanical impact of ankle foot orthoses (AFO) on gait in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). Leveraging data from the Swiss Paraplegic Center, we constructed anatomically and muscularly scaled models for SCI-AFO users, aiming to predict changes in gait
