Uncomplicated urinary tract infections.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common types of bacterial infection in outpatient medicine. Rising rates of antibiotic resistance and a better understanding of the ecological adverse effects (collateral damage) of antibiotics warrant a reevaluation of the treatment recommendations for uncomplicated UTI. The new S3 guideline contains updated recommendations. METHODS: The new S3 guideline is based on a review of publications on uncomplicated UTI retrieved by a systematic search of the Medline and Cochrane Library databases. Guidelines from abroad were also conside

[Rational approach to treatment of patients with polytrauma complicated by urinary tract infection].

Development of secondary immune dysbalance in patients with polytrauma complicated by urinary tract infection (acute pyelonephritis) was observed. In such cases bacterial complications were highly possible, that required the use of immunotropic drugs (cycloferon) increasing the host nonspecific resistance, responsible for Th1 immune response. The cycloferon therapy of the patients with chronic pyelonephritis normalized the lymphocyte electrophoretic mobility promoting efficient recovery of the immune homeostasis. Cycloferon was shown to be effective in the prophylaxis and therapy of infective

Absence of urinary tract infection in dogs with experimentally induced hyperadrenocorticism.

Objectives of this study were to determine occurrence of urinary tract infection and describe results of urine analysis and urine culture in dogs with experimentally induced hyperadrenocorticism. Dogs were randomly assigned to receive either hydrocortisone (nine dogs) or placebo (eight dogs) for 49 consecutive days. Before and on day 49 of treatment, evaluation of dogs included physical examination, abdominal ultrasound, urine culture, urinalysis, adrenal function testing, and measurement of urine protein and creatinine and activity of serum alkaline phosphatase. All dogs in the experimental g

Urinary tract infections and the urethral syndrome in adult women: pathogenesis, diagnosis, and therapy.

Urinary infections in adult women are extremely common. Yet, dysuria, often a symptom of these infections, can be caused by a number of genitourinary pathogens. Symptomatic urinary infections caused primarily by Escherichia coli or Staphylococcus saprophyticus are best confirmed by demonstrating the presence of 10(2) or more organisms per ml of midstream urine in quantitative cultures. Other causes of dysuria such as vaginitis and urethritis due to venereal disease should be suspected in patients with additional signs and symptoms characteristic of these infections and in young, sexually activ

Novel Isoxazole-Based Antifungal Drug Candidates.

Microbiological communities have a significant impact on health and disease. Candida are ubiquitous fungal pathogens that colonize the mucosal surfaces of the genital, urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tracts, as well as the oral cavity. If the immune system is inadequate, then Candida infections may pose a significant threat. Due to the limited number of clinically approved drugs for the treatment of Candida albicans-based infections and the rapid emergence of resistance to the existing antifungals, a novel series of isoxazole-based derivatives was synthesized and evaluated in vitro

Susceptibility of urinary Enterobacteriaceae to selected antimicrobials in an out-patient setting in Wallonia-Belgium: retrospective analysis over 5 years period (2018-2022).

OBJECTIVE: Increasing antimicrobial resistance in urinary tract infection is a major healthcare concern. In this study, we evaluate the patterns of resistance exhibited by the most implicated microorganisms in urine infections. This approach is a prerequisite for an appropriate and successful empiric therapy in ambulatory patients. METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out from January 2018 to September 2022 in Synlab-Collard laboratory, Liège, Belgium; a total of 129,939 Enterobacteriaceae isolated from 120,616 positive urine sample were included. RESULTS: Sex ratio is 81.6% female and

Human infectious diseases and risk of preeclampsia: an updated review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia (PE) is one of the major causes of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality, especially in low- and middle-income countries. In recent years, a growing body of literatures suggests that infections by bacteria, viruses, and parasites and their related inflammations play an important role in the pathogenesis of PE. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Google scholar, and Cochrane databases using the following search words: "infection and preeclampsia," "bacterial infection and preeclampsia," "viral infection and preeclampsia" and "parasitic infection and preeclampsia." Oral fosfomycin activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae in a dynamic bladder infection in vitro model.

INTRODUCTION: The use of oral fosfomycin for urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by non-Escherichia coli uropathogens is uncertain, including Klebsiella pneumoniae, the second most common uropathogen. METHODS: A multicompartment bladder infection in vitro model was used with standard media and synthetic human urine (SHU) to simulate urinary fosfomycin exposure after a single 3 g oral dose (fAUC0-72 16884 mg·h/L, t½ 5.5 h) against 15 K. pneumoniae isolates including ATCC 13883 (MIC 2 to >1024 mg/L) with a constant media inflow (20 mL/h) and 4-hourly voiding of each bladder. The impact of th

Interventions for preventing recurrent urinary tract infection during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent urinary tract infections (RUTI) are common in women who are pregnant and may cause serious adverse pregnancy outcomes for both mother and child including preterm birth and small-for-gestational-age babies. Interventions used to prevent RUTI in women who are pregnant can be pharmacological (antibiotics) or non-pharmacological (cranberry products, acupuncture, probiotics and behavioural modifications). So far little is known about the best way to prevent RUTI in pregnant women. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of interventions for preventing RUTI in pregnant women. The pri

Successful treatment of malakoplakia of the bladder in a kitten.

A 4-month-old female kitten presented with chronic lower urinary tract signs and Escherichia coli cystitis, and was diagnosed with urinary bladder malakoplakia based upon histopathology. The kitten was treated with a prolonged antibiotic course and the malakoplakia resolved. Malakoplakia is a chronic granulomatous reaction characterized by the formation of Michaelis-Gutman bodies within von Hansemann macrophages. It is well described in humans, but has never been documented in a living veterinary patient. This case report describes the first successful treatment of malakoplakia in veterinary m
