Comparative Study of Atropine Combined with Sodium Nitroprusside Pretreatment to Prevent Trigemino Cardiac Reflex after Trigeminal Ganglion Compression.

INTRODUCTION: Manipulation of percutaneous compression of the trigeminal ganglion (PCTG) for trigeminal neuralgia (TN) can lead to significant haemodynamic changes, which were termed trigemino cardiac reflex (TCR). Nevertheless, many studies indicated that atropine pretreatment can reduce the incidence of bradycardia and cardiac arrest, but do not take precautions against abrupt rise of blood pressure. AIM: The purpose of our study was to compare control group {patients receiving Sodium Nitro-Prusside (SNP) pretreatment before PCTG} with study groups (patients receiving different doses of atr…

Impact of atropine injection on heart rate response during treadmill exercise echocardiography: a double-blind randomized pilot study.

We evaluated the effect of atropine on the heart rate (HR) response during treadmill exercise echocardiography. A potential limitation of treadmill exercise echocardiography is the requirement for postexercise imaging. Rapid recovery of HR and wall motion abnormalities may decrease test sensitivity. A double-blind randomized study was performed at a tertiary care center. Fifty-two patients (age, 63 +/- 9 years) with known or suspected coronary artery disease were injected with either 0.5 mg of atropine or saline before treadmill exercise echocardiography. HR response during and after exercise …

Failure of IV atropine to abolish nasal irritation caused by chlormethiazole infusion in elderly patients undergoing spinal anaesthesia.

The efficacy of intravenous atropine in abolishing the nasal irritation of chlormethiazole was assessed. Forty elderly patients undergoing transurethral resection of prostate under spinal anaesthesia were studied. One ml of either atropine sulphate (0.6 mg) or normal saline was administered intravenously in a double-blind fashion 10 minutes prior to infusion of 0.8% chlormethiazole edisylate. A loading infusion of 5 ml X min-1 of the chlormethiazole solution was followed by a variable rate of infusion in order to maintain a predetermined state of sedation--i.e. where the patient lapsed into sl…

Decentration of peripheral defocus ophthalmic lenses in the control of childhood and adolescent myopia in patients treated with atropine: A descriptive study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Peripheral defocus lenses (PDLs) have emerged as an effective therapeutic strategy to slow the progression of childhood and adolescent myopia. However, achieving optimal centration in pediatric patients can be challenging, and individual facial and postural characteristics must be carefully considered to ensure appropiate fitting. The primary objective of this study was to quantify PDL decentration as an undesirable effect during myopia management in children and adolescents undergoing concurrent atropine treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The distance between the pup…

Efficacy of 0.01% atropine eye drops for myopia control in children of different ethnicities: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Although 0.01% atropine is widely used for myopia control, its efficacy is debated and its effectiveness across different ethnicities is unknown. We aim to evaluate its efficacy in different ethnic backgrounds. METHODS: The randomised clinical trials (RCTs) that compared 0.01% atropine against a placebo in myopic children from five databases through August 2025 were included. The primary outcomes included (1) the ratio of the means (RoM), defined as the RoM of annual changes in spherical equivalent refraction (SER) or ocular axial length (AL) in 0.01% atropine to the placebo …

A systematic review with meta-analysis on the efficacy of 0.01% atropine eyedrops in preventing myopia progression in worldwide children's populations.

INTRODUCTION: Atropine eyedrops have long been used off-label to prevent myopia progression in children, and many clinical trials have been published on this topic in the past 30 years. Trials initially tested doses ranging from 0.01% to 1%, but more recently, the interest has turned to low doses, mainly 0.01%. Moreover, the first studies were carried out in Asian populations, but the number of trials conducted in other geographical areas has rapidly increased from 2020 onward. This meta-analysis was aimed at summarizing the evidence on the efficacy of 0.01% atropine eyedrops on the reduction …

Twice-daily administration improves the effectiveness of 0.01% atropine for controlling myopia in slowing axial elongation and refractive progression.

PURPOSE: It remains unclear whether increasing the frequency of administration of 0.01% atropine improves its effectiveness in slowing axial elongation or refractive progression. This study compared twice-daily 0.01% atropine administration and traditional once-nightly administration. METHODS: A hybrid design was adopted incorporating both retrospective and prospective elements, with participants observed for 1 year. The control group (received saline eye drops) and once-daily 0.01% atropine group (Atropine-1 group) were derived from two previous trials, while the twice-daily 0.01% atropine g…

Effects of malathion nebulization on the histopathology of the respiratory tract of Wistar rats, treated with sublingual atropine sulfate eye drops.

This study sought to evaluate the histological damage to the respiratory tract caused by inhaling an aqueous solution of 50% malathion, as well as the protective effects of sublingually-applied 1% atropine sulfate eye drops in rats. We searched the literature for the signs and symptoms associated with malathion inhalation for rats, humans, and livestock. We divide 24 female Wistar rats into three groups exposed to distilled water, malathion, and plastic boxes coupled to nebulizers kept at 22- 24°C. At the end of the experiment, the mice were sacrificed and their lungs and trachea were harveste…

Dexmedetomidine attenuates the positive chronotropic effects of intravenous atropine in patients with bradycardia during spinal anaesthesia: a retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Dexmedetomidine is a sedative used during spinal anaesthesia. However, it frequently induces bradycardia. Although intravenous atropine is often used for treating bradycardia during regional anaesthesia, the response to atropine might be attenuated by concomitantly administering sedatives. METHODS: We examined the effects of atropine used for treating bradycardia during spinal anaesthesia among patients receiving dexmedetomidine (D group), propofol (P group), or neither (nonDnonP group) for sedation, retrospectively. RESULTS: A total of 108 patients were included. Heart rate wa…

Effect of Atropine on Adrenergic Responsiveness of Erythrocyte and Heart Rhythm Variability in Outbred Rats with Stimulation of the Central Neurotransmitter Systems.

Single injection of muscarinic cholinoceptor blocker atropine (1 mg/kg) to outbred male rats reduced β-adrenergic responsiveness of erythrocytes (by 2.2 times) and the content of epinephrine granules on erythrocytes (by 1.5 times), significantly increased HR and rigidity of the heart rhythm, and manifold decreased the power of all spectral components of heart rhythm variability. Stimulation of the central neurotransmitter systems increased β-adrenergic responsiveness of erythrocytes (by 15-26%), decreased the number of epinephrine granules on erythrocytes (by 25-40%), and increased HR and card…
