Application of the Bifactor S - 1 Model to Multisource Ratings of ADHD/ODD Symptoms: an Appropriate Bifactor Model for Symptom Ratings.

The symmetrical bifactor model is often applied to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-hyperactive/impulsive (HI), ADHD-inattentive (IN), and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms, but this model frequently yields anomalous or inadmissible results. An alternative model, the bifactor S - 1 model, is more appropriate for examining the hierarchical structure of ADHD/ODD symptoms. Both models were applied to ADHD-HI, ADHD-IN, and ODD symptom ratings by mothers, fathers, and teachers for 2142 Spanish children (49.49% girls; ages 8-13 years). The symmetrical bifactor model yielded

Negative parenting behavior and childhood oppositional defiant disorder: differential moderation by positive and negative peer regard.

Although negative parenting behavior and peer status are independently associated with childhood conduct problems (e.g., oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)), relatively little is known about their interplay, particularly in relation to differentiated measures of positive and negative peer regard. To improve the specificity of the association of negative parenting behavior and peer factors with ODD, we explored the potential interaction of parenting and peer status in a sample of 169 five-to ten-year-old ethnically diverse children with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADH

Oppositional defiant disorder.

BACKGROUND: Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is defined as a repetitive and persistent pattern of opposition, defiant, disobedient and disruptive behaviours toward authority figures persisting for at least 6 months. OBJECTIVE: This article reviews the nature of ODD, its relationship to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and conduct disorder, and considers the management options available to general practitioners. DISCUSSION: Many of the behaviours required to meet this diagnosis are not uncommon in the preschool child or adolescent. However, in children with ODD the behaviours are p

Psychiatric comorbidity in children and adolescents with reading disability.

This study investigated the association between reading disability (RD) and internalizing and externalizing psychopathology in a large community sample of twins with (N = 209) and without RD (N = 192). The primary goals were to clarify the relation between RD and comorbid psychopathology, to test for gender differences in the behavioral correlates of RD, and to test if common familial influences contributed to the association between RD and other disorders. Results indicated that individuals with RD exhibited significantly higher rates of all internalizing and externalizing disorders than indi

Prenatal exposure to maternal and paternal smoking on attention deficit hyperactivity disorders symptoms and diagnosis in offspring.

The study examined the effect of maternal and paternal smoking during pregnancy on the child's inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms, and the risk for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Generalized estimating equations, incorporating data from multiple informants (parents and teachers), was used to evaluate levels of ADHD as a function of parental smoking. The risk for ADHD, ODD, and comorbid ADHD and ODD was evaluated using polytomous logistic regression. We found that maternal, but not paternal, smoking was significantly asso

EFA supplementation in children with inattention, hyperactivity, and other disruptive behaviors.

This pilot study evaluated the effects of supplementation with PUFA on blood FA composition and behavior in children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD)-like symptoms also reporting thirst and skin problems. Fifty children were randomized to treatment groups receiving either a PUFA supplement providing a daily dose of 480 mg DHA, 80 mg EPA, 40 mg arachidonic acid (AA), 96 mg GLA, and 24 mg alpha-tocopheryl acetate, or an olive oil placebo for 4 mon of double-blind parallel treatment. Supplementation with the PUFA led to a substantial increase in the proportions of EPA, DHA, a

Genetic effects on ADHD symptomatology in 7- to 13-year-old twins: results from a telephone survey.

The magnitude of genetic and environmental factors and the influence of contrast effects on attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptomatology were examined on a sample of 900 twin pairs, aged 7-13, participating in the Virginia Twin Study of Adolescent Behavioral Development (VTSABD). In addition, the genetic and environmental correlations between ADHD and oppositional-defiant disorder/conduct disorder (ODD/CD) symptomatology were estimated. A series of structural models was applied to maternal ratings from a telephone survey, designed to screen for the three dimensions of ADHD sy

Behavioral and neural consequences of prenatal exposure to nicotine.

OBJECTIVE: To review evidence for the neurodevelopmental effects of in utero exposure to nicotine. Concerns about long-term cognitive and behavioral effects of prenatal exposure to nicotine arise from reports of increased rates of disruptive behavioral disorders in children whose mothers smoked during pregnancy. The relatively high rate of tobacco smoking among pregnant women (25% of all pregnancies in the U.S.) underlines the seriousness of these concerns. METHOD: This review examines the largest and most recent epidemiological and clinical studies that investigated the association of prenat

Psychiatric disorders and behavioral problems in children and adolescents with Tourette syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Many previous studies have surveyed associations between Tourette syndrome (TS) and co-morbid psychiatric disorders, but they usually did not include oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), conduct disorder (CD), separation anxiety disorder (SAD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHOD: The subjects were children and adolescents with TS who visited a child and adolescent psychiatric clinic, and who were interviewed using DSM-IV diagnostic criteria. Characteristics of their tics were examined by the Yale-Global Tic Severity Scale (Y-GTSS). Behavioral problems were surveyed b

Editorial: Irritable Imaging: Interpreting Null Results in Psychiatric Neuroimaging.

There is a growing appreciation that clinically impairing irritability is an important transdiagnostic symptom among children and adolescents with mental illness. Severe irritability, defined by frequent, developmentally inappropriate temper outbursts and low frustration tolerance, is one of the most common reasons that youths are referred for psychiatric evaluation and care.1 Although chronic irritability is the primary symptom in disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, the symptom is common in a diverse set of DSM-5 diagnoses, including major depressive disorder, autism spectrum disorder, op

Emotion process deficits in children with ODD and their associations with different dimensions of ODD symptoms: a fNIRS study.

Affective symptoms and behavioural symptoms are two important dimensions of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms. These two dimensions of symptoms are closely associated with emotion process deficits in children with ODD. This study utilized functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to investigate the brain activation during the emotion process in children with ODD and its relationship with ODD symptoms. A total of 72 participants, comprising 35 children with ODD and 37 typically developing (TD) children were recruited to perform experiment tasks of emotion recognition (ERC) and em

Novel Oppositional Defiant Disorder 12 Months After Traumatic Brain Injury in Children and Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The investigators examined the factors predictive of novel oppositional defiant disorder in the 6-12 months following traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: Children ages 5-14 years old who experienced a TBI were recruited from consecutive admissions to five hospitals. Participants were evaluated soon after injury (baseline) for preinjury characteristics, including psychiatric disorders, adaptive function, family function, psychosocial adversity, family psychiatric history, socioeconomic status, and injury severity, to develop a biopsychosocial predictive model for development of n

Oxytocin: at birth and beyond. A systematic review of the long-term effects of peripartum oxytocin.

Oxytocin is one of the most commonly used medications during labour and delivery. Recent insights from basic neuroscience research suggest that the uterotonic effects of oxytocin may arguably be trivial when compared with its profound effects on higher-order human behaviour. The purpose of this review is to highlight the potential consequences of manipulating oxytocinergic signalling during the peripartum period and its long-term impact on the maternal-infant dyad. We identified four domains where modulation of oxytocinergic signalling might be consequential: postpartum depression; breastfeedi

Pubertal influences on neural activation during risky decision-making in youth with ADHD and disruptive behavior disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Risk-taking during adolescence is a leading cause of mortality; Neuroscience research examining pubertal effects on decision-making is needed to better inform interventions, particularly among youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity (ADHD) and disruptive behavior disorders (DBD), who are particularly prone to risky decision-making. We examined effects of pubertal development on risky decision-making and neural activation during decision-making among youth with ADHD/DBDs. METHOD: Forty-six 11-12-year-olds (29.4% girls; 54.9% white; Tanner M(SD) = 2.08(1.32)) who met DSM-5 criteri

The Parent-Child Relationship and Posttreatment Child Outcomes Across Two Treatments for Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

This study examined the degree to which the parent-child relationship uniquely predicted clinical outcomes in externalizing problems and adaptive skills in children meeting diagnostic criteria for oppositional defiant disorder and whether facets of this relationship moderated the effects of two unique psychosocial treatments. We recruited 134 children and their parents (38.06% female; M age = 9.52 years, range = 7-14; 83.58% White). Families were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: Parent Management Training (PMT) and Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS). We formed principal compone

Oppositionality and sympathetic skin response in adolescents: specific associations with the headstrong/hurtful dimension.

Oppositionality encompasses distinct dimensions, and few studies have investigated the validity of such distinctions from a pathophysiological perspective. Our aim was to investigate the association between sympathetic skin responses (SSR) and distinct oppositional dimensions in a community sample of adolescents. Forty adolescents aged 13.84±1.46 years participated in this study. Oppositionality was measured by externalizing behavior and bullying scores (dependent variables), while SSR was recorded by electrical changes at the skin level (independent variables). Results showed that increased S

Risky decision making in substance dependent adolescents with a disruptive behavior disorder.

Of all psychiatric disorders, the disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs) are the most likely to predispose to substance dependence (SD). One possible underlying mechanism for this increased vulnerability is risky decision making. The aim of this study was to examine decision making in DBD adolescents with and without SD. Twenty-five DBD adolescents (19 males) with SD (DBD+SD), 28 DBD adolescents (23 males) without SD (DBD-SD) and 99 healthy controls (72 males) were included in the study. DBD adolescents with co-morbid attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were excluded. Risky decision
