Between 1977 and 1995, nine stapedectomies using the Robinson-vein graft technique were performed in six high-performance airplane pilots diagnosed with otosclerosis. All of them returned to full active duty after stapedectomy without any vestibular symptoms. These cases illustrate that it can be safe for fighter or test pilots to return to full flight status after stapedectomy. These cases also suggest that full flight status can be reinstated as soon as 3 months after stapedectomy without endangering flight safety.

Analyses of injuries sustained in airline disasters have been hampered by the frequent association of burn injury and by poor documentation. This report analyzes autopsy data from the crash of Avianca Flight 52 on Long Island, New York. There were 158 passengers of whom 73 died. The majority of persons had multiple organ injuries (average, 3.8/victim). Severe neurologic trauma included subarachnoid hemorrhage (65%), skull fracture (32%), and brain laceration (22%). The left ventricular cineangiograms of 22 asymptomatic, apparently healthy male aviators without noninvasive (echocardiographic or auscultatory) evidence of mitral valve prolapse were reviewed and compared with those of 12 men with noninvasive evidence of mild mitral valve prolapse. The maximal protrusion of the posterior mitral valve leaflet superior and posterior to a line perpendicular to the long axis of the left ventricle at end-systole was measured from the right anterior oblique left ventricular cineangiogram by repeated observation of left ventricular inflow.
