OBJECTIVE: Many authors, including us, elucidated that vitamin D deficiency was a risk factor for benign paroxysmal position vertigo. We speculated vitamin D deficiency was likely to intervene otoconia formation by globular substance (GS).
METHODS: Kunming mice were randomly divided into three groups: vitamin D sufficient group (12-wk standard control diet), vitamin D deficiency group (16-wk vitamin D deficiency diet), and vitamin D supplement group (16-wk vitamin D deficiency diet and followed 8-wk standard control diet). At 12, 16, and 24 weeks, blood was collected for measuring vitamin D a

Distinguishing between serious (e.g., stroke) and benign (e.g., benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, BPPV) disorders remains challenging in emergency consultations for vertigo and dizziness (VD). A number of clues from patient history and clinical examination, including several diagnostic index tests have been reported recently. The objective of the present study was to analyze frequency and distribution patterns of specific vestibular and non-vestibular diagnoses in an interdisciplinary university emergency room (ER), including data on daytime and season of presentation. A retrospective char…

Vestibular disorders such as vestibular migraine (VM), benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Ménière's disease (MD), persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD), and vestibular neuritis (VN) are not uncommon among women of reproductive age and may occur or worsen during pregnancy. However, the management of these disorders during gestation is complicated by physiological changes, the limited safety data on many medications, and ethical constraints in clinical research involving pregnant individuals. This review focuses on the therapeutic strategies employed in managing vestibular di…

BACKGROUND: Vertigo is characterized by the illusion of motion, typically described as a spinning sensation. Seasonal variations in vertigo incidence, particularly in Meniere's disease and Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, have been reported, though underlying mechanisms remain unclear.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigates key environmental drivers by analyzing seasonal patterns of vertigo while accounting for temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, and viral infections in Israel's semi-arid Negev desert. We hypothesized that environmental conditions are associated with the onset of ver…

Although vertigo is commonly encountered in many clinical disciplines, meticulous analysis of the onset and nature of the vertigo is essential not to overlook the vertigo of brainstem or cerebral origin without any other neurological signs and symptoms. Three central vestibular projection pathways and their possible functional roles in relation to vertigo were briefly discussed. To illustrate the characteristic clinical features of vertigo of various origins, 16 typical cases were presented and discussed. Their etiology include Ménière's disease, vertigo of neurovascular compression, sudden de

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura is a hematologic disease with a high mortality rate that affects multiple organ systems. It is caused by a deficiency of a metalloprotease known as the ADAMTS-13 enzyme. Patients can present with fever, hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, kidney injury, and neurological symptoms. Here we present a case of a female with TTP who was initially diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Her initial symptoms were vertigo, blurry vision, and gait imbalance, which were accompanied by elevated total bilirubin, acute kidney injury, thrombocytopenia, …

OBJECTIVE: We report a rare case of sudden deafness and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) corresponding to a canalithiasis of the ipsilateral left posterior semicircular canal (PSC).
CASE REPORT: The initial examination showed intact lateral semicircular canal (LSC) function. Cerebral MRI results were normal. However evoked otoacoustics emissions were absent in the left ear. The patient developed, in the course of one week, symptoms and signs of an acute unilateral vestibulopathy in the same ear. However there were no change in hearing loss after it.
CONCLUSION: The association of …

Equilibrium disorders caused by involvement of brainstem and cerebellar structures are common in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), but peripheral conditions such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) can be sometimes confused with those of a central origin. Therefore, an accurate otoneurologic investigation paying attention to differential diagnosis aspects should be performed in these subjects. Among available diagnostic tools, electro-oculography, posturography and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) are especially suited to assess vestibulo-oculomotor and vestibulosp…

We carried out a clinical trial on the treatment of acute unilateral vestibular disturbances (AUVD) without typical Meniere's disease and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Two therapy groups were selected: vestibular training (VT) with drug therapy and drug administration alone. After the experimental period of 8 weeks, all patients were classified into two groups depending on the methods of treatment, and the clinical courses of the patients were compared statistically. It was confirmed statistically by global judgments of symptoms and signs that improvement rates were higher in the group…

The first reports of an involvement of the lateral canal (LC) in paroxysmal positional vertigo (PPV), were published in 1985, by Luciano Cipparrone et al., from Italy and Joseph McClure from Canada. The increasing interest of otolaryngologists and neurologists has led to a progressive advance in the knowledge of this labyrinthine disorder regarding its epidemiological, physiopathological, clinical, and therapeutic aspects. According to the most recent data, LC-benign PPV accounts for 17% of all PPV patients, regardless of gender and between the two labyrinths. The LC-PPV syndrome is characteri
