Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) probability among parents who live in Kandahar, Afghanistan and lost at least a child to armed conflict.

The last 4 decades of conflict in Afghanistan resulted in incalculable deaths, injuries, and millions of displacements. Although there are routine reports on casualties of the warfare, the information on its long-term psycho-social sequelae is somehow discounted. This study aimed to assess post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) probability and its associated factors among parents who live in Kandahar, the southern province of Afghanistan, and lost at least one child to armed conflict. We conducted a health-facility-based cross-sectional study involving 474 bereaved parents in Kandahar province

Attentional bias in complicated grief.

BACKGROUND: Complicated Grief (CG) is a debilitating potential consequence of bereavement. Despite the significant health costs associated with CG, relatively little is known about the cognitive processes associated with the condition. This study investigated information processing in CG. METHOD: Twenty four individuals with CG and 25 bereaved individuals without CG completed a modified emotional Stroop task in which they were presented with death-related and neutral cue words. Half of the participants were also given instructions to suppress thoughts of their loved one's death while completi…

Mortality after parental death in childhood: a nationwide cohort study from three Nordic countries.

BACKGROUND: Bereavement by spousal death and child death in adulthood has been shown to lead to an increased risk of mortality. Maternal death in infancy or parental death in early childhood may have an impact on mortality but evidence has been limited to short-term or selected causes of death. Little is known about long-term or cause-specific mortality after parental death in childhood. METHODS AND FINDINGS: This cohort study included all persons born in Denmark from 1968 to 2008 (n = 2,789,807) and in Sweden from 1973 to 2006 (n = 3,380,301), and a random sample of 89.3% of all born in Finl…

Pediatric Palliative Care in Infants and Neonates.

The application of palliative and hospice care to newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) has been evident for over 30 years. Th … gness to comprehensively address of the continuum of interdisciplinary palliative, end of life, and bereavement care has varied widely. While neonatology service capacity has grown worldwide during this time, so has attention to pediatric palliative care generally, and neonatal-perinatal palliative care specifically. Improvements have occurred in family-cente …

Predictors of complicated grief: a systematic review of empirical studies.

A systematic review of the literature on predictors of complicated grief (CG) was undertaken with the aim of clarifying the current knowledge and to inform future planning and work in CG following bereavement. Predictors of CG prior to the death include previous loss, exposure to trauma, a previous psychiatric history, attachment style, and the relationship to the deceased. Factors associated with the death include violent death, the quality of the caregiving or dying experience, close kinship relationship to the deceased, marital closeness and dependency, and lack of preparation for the death…

The construction of a day by elderly widowers.

The way in which some elderly widowers living alone experientially organize time can be viewed as on a continuum structured around the notion of a "day" as a central organizing focus. Related to this is the role of a "daily highlight" in organizing daily activities. The continuing role of bereavement, effects of living alone, and other factors may help structure this experiential continuum.

When Memories Keep Grief Alive: A Dynamic Model of Memory Characteristics and Prolonged Grief.

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is a condition marked by sustained separation distress. Although cognitive models suggest that memory processes are critical in PGD, the specific characteristics of loss-related memories have received limited longitudinal attention. This study examined how loss-related memory characteristics and prolonged grief symptoms (PGS) influence each other over the first 18 months of bereavement. METHOD: A community sample of 275 bereaved adults (79% women, Mage = 46.4) completed assessments of PGS and the Oxford Grief-Memory Characteristics Scale at three t…

Parent-Clinician Communication and End-of-Life Preparation in Pediatric Oncology: An Explanatory Sequential Mixed-Methods Study.

PURPOSE: Parental preparedness for their child's end of life (EOL) may lessen perceived suffering and prolonged grief. Although clear communication may support parental preparedness, the specific communication components that influence this process remain poorly understood. This study examined how communication influences parental EOL preparation. METHODS: We employed an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design. We analyzed cross-sectional survey data from recently bereaved parents (6-24 months post-loss) using multiple logistic regression. Informed by quantitative findings, we conducted s

Grieving as a form of learning: Insights from neuroscience applied to grief and loss.

Recent grief research suggests that the influential cognitive stress theory should be updated with evidence from cognitive neuroscience. Combining human and animal neuroscience with attachment theory, we propose that semantic knowledge of the everlasting nature of the attachment figure and episodic, autobiographical memories of the death are in conflict, perhaps explaining the duration of grieving and generating predictions about complications in prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Our gone-but-also-everlasting model emphasizes that grieving may be a form of learning, requiring time and experienti

Bridging Formal Health Services and Community Care for Improved Access to Culturally Appropriate End-of-Life Support for Migrant Communities.

The research aimed to understand the different cultural needs relating to death and dying of migrant populations in Western Sydney, Australia, and how end-of-life care can be provided in culturally safe ways which can, in turn, inform the policies that shape palliative care and bereavement service delivery. The mixed methods design for this study used an online quantitative survey using the Death Literacy Index, key informant qualitative interviews, culture-based community focus groups, and individual Photovoice interviews with carers. In all, 266 participants across the three largest migrant …

Support needs of older adults coping with the death of close others: toward a community-based approach to death education in China.

With the development of community-based educational gerontology in China, increasing attention has been paid to death education for communit … der-old adults. Second, a clear distinction emerges between anticipated and experienced needs, with bereavement experience being associated with a shift in perceptions of support from abstract emotional expectations to more concrete and practical demands. Third, awareness of death education is unevenly distributed and closely associated with educational attai …

Health transitions in recently widowed older women: a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Older recently widowed women are faced with increased health risks and chronic conditions associated not only with bereavement, but also, older age. Loss and grief, adjusting to living alone, decreased income, and managing multiple chronic conditions can impact on older women's ability to transition following recent spousal bereavement. Providing appropriate, timely, and effective services to foster this life transition is of critical importance, yet few services directed towards these women exist in Australia, and there is little data describing the experiences of women and their …

The Longitudinal Association Between Death Attitudes and Grief Symptoms: A Three-Wave Cross-Lagged Study.

Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is characterized by persistent and impairing grief symptoms following bereavement. Although certain death attitudes have been associated with grief symptoms, their bidirectional relationships over time remain unclear. This three-wave (6-month intervals) study examined reciprocal associations between five dimensions of death attitudes (fear of death, death avoidance, neutral acceptance, approach acceptance, escape acceptance) and grief symptoms in 159 bereaved Chinese college students using cross-lagged panel models. Results showed that fear of death at Time 1 pre…

Between epistemic injustice and therapeutic jurisprudence: Coronial processes involving families of autistic people, people with learning disabilities and/or mental ill health.

Understanding how and why someone dies unexpectedly is key to bereaved family members. The coronial process in England investigates instances where the cause of death is unknown, violent or unnatural and/or occurred in state detention. Families are held to be at the centre of this process and the coroner's role has extended to concern about therapeutic jurisprudence, that is, how legal processes can minimise negative consequences for participants without jeopardising due process. Therapeutic jurisprudence involves unresolved tensions, however, and an epistemic power imbalance. Within the inque
