Sudden infant death syndrome and abnormal metabolism of thiamin.

Although it has been generally accepted that moving the infant from the prone to the supine position has solved the problem of sudden infant … from feeding the infant with thiamin deficient breast milk. The early investigators of the cause of beriberi considered that this form of sudden death was pathognomonic of the infantile form of the disease.

Vitamin A deficiency eye disease: Night blindness was recognized by the ancient Egyptians and Greeks, and many authorities from Galen onward advocated liver as a curative. Thiamine Deficiency in a Developed Country: Acute Lactic Acidosis in Two Neonates Due to Unsupplemented Parenteral Nutrition.

Thiamine is a water-soluble vitamin implicated in several metabolic processes. Its deficiency, due to prolonged parenteral nutrition without adequate vitamin supplementation, can lead to multiorgan failure characterized by cardiovascular impairment and metabolic acidosis refractory to bicarbonate administration. Only thiamine administration allows the remission of symptoms. We report 2 preterm infants with acute thiamine deficiency due to prolonged parenteral nutrition without adequate vitamin supplementation.

Epidemic neuropathy in Cuba: morphological characterization of peripheral nerve lesions in sural nerve biopsies.

More than 50,000 patients were affected in Cuba during an epidemic outbreak of peripheral neuropathy from January 1992 until September 1993. The disease presented as either a retrobulbar optic neuropathy, a predominantly sensory peripheral neuropathy, a dorsolateral myeloneuropathy, or as mixed forms. The morphological findings in sural nerve biopsies from 34 patients with various forms of the disease are presented here. Frozen, paraffin and semi-thin sections were prepared for light and electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry and morphometric analysis. Every case presented morphological alt

Re-emergence of thiamine deficiency disease in the Pacific islands (2014-15): A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: From late 2014 multiple atolls in Kiribati reported an unusual and sometimes fatal illness. We conducted an investigation to ide … se by multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: An outbreak of thiamine deficiency disease (beriberi) in Kiribati signals the re-emergence of a classic nutritional disease in the Pacific islands after five decades. Although treatment is safe and effective, the underlying reason for the re-emergence remains unknown. Chromium was highly and positivel …

[Heart failure due to metabolic heart disorders].

The classification of myocardial diseases, proposed by the WHO/ISFC task force in 1980, distinguishes specific heart muscle diseases from myocardial diseases of unknown origin, termed cardiomyopathies. In this article, specific heart muscle diseases caused by metabolic disturbances are reviewed. The disorders were categorized into 4 types: 1. endocrine disorders; 2. storage or infiltration disorders, such as amyloidosis, hemochromatosis and familial storage disorders; 3. nutritional disorders, such as Kwashiorkor, beri-beri, obesity and alcoholic and electrolyte disorders; and 4. Diabetic hear

Thiamine and magnesium deficiencies: keys to disease.

Thiamine deficiency (TD) is accepted as the cause of beriberi because of its action in the metabolism of simple carbohydrates, mainly as the rate limiting cofactor for the dehydrogenases of pyruvate and alpha-ketoglutarate, both being critical to the action of the citric acid cycle. Transketolase, dependent on thiamine and magnesium, occurs twice in the oxidative pentose pathway, important in production of reducing equivalents. Thiamine is also a cofactor in the dehydrogenase complex in the degradation of the branched chain amino acids, leucine, isoleucine and valine. In spite of these well ac…

Roast pig and scientific discovery. Part II.

In Part I of "Roast Pig and Scientific Discovery" (American Review of Respiratory Disease, May 1977). I gave a classic instance of Chance, or Serendipity, as related by Charles Lamb in his "Dissertation upon Roast Pig." In this essay, Lamb tells how many centuries ago Bo-Bo, the Chinese swine-herd's son, stumbled upon the delicacy of roast pork when he accidentally burned down his father's house and barn and in the process roasted ("burnt") nine newly farrowed pigs. I then gave (A) eight examples in which chance speeded or completed a scientist's ongoing work and (B) five examples in which cha
