Varied Knowledge of HIV Transmission and Prevention Among Gay, Bisexual, and Heterosexual Men Who Have Sex with Men in Australia: Results of a National Online Survey.

We assessed knowledge about HIV transmission and prevention among men who have sex with men (MSM) to identify education needs. A national online survey was conducted across Australia in July-August 2024, including nine HIV knowledge items. We assessed how HIV knowledge varied by sexual identity (using ANOVA), and characteristics independently associated with HIV knowledge using multivariable linear regression. Of 2,688 respondents, 1,241 were gay men (46.2%), 976 were bisexual/pansexual (36.3%), 84 queer (3.1%), 199 straight/heterosexual (7.4%), and 188 identified another way (7.0%). There was

Characteristics Associated with HIV Testing Frequency Among Gay and Bisexual Cisgender Men Who Have Sex with Men in the United States: Cross-sectional Study.

Current HIV testing recommendations for sexually active gay and bisexual men who have sex with men (GBMSM) are to test for HIV annually. However, some GBMSM might benefit from more frequent HIV testing. We conducted a cross-sectional, online survey of cisgender GBMSM across the United States. Data collection occurred from October 2022-October 2023. Participants reported demographic information, sexual behavior, and HIV testing frequency over the past 2 years. HIV testing frequency was categorized as less than annual, annual, or greater than annual. We examined demographic, behavioral, mental h

Activity Space Mapping and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Uptake Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Sexual Minority Men in Small Cities and Towns in the United States.

In the US, gay, bisexual, and other sexual minoritized men (GBSMM) remain disproportionately impacted by HIV, and continue to experience unmet needs for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). A growing body of literature has underscored the need to consider the geographic factors of HIV prevention, particularly beyond administrative boundaries and towards localized spaces that influence the accessibility and utilization of health-promoting resources. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the associations of driving times from activity spaces to PrEP offering facilities and individual Pr

"We have our reasons": Exploring the acceptability of pre-exposure prophylaxis among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Ghanaian men who have sex with men (MSM) face significant HIV disparities compared to the general population in Ghana. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective tool for HIV prevention. Previous studies on the perspectives of PrEP use among Ghanaian MSM identified high interest in PrEP among this population. However, the knowledge from the previous research, which was the best available evidence at the time, was primarily hypothetical because those data were collected before any real-world implementation of PrEP in Ghana. The analysis aims to identify and understand the

Preferences for models of sexual health service delivery among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in Australia: a discrete choice experiment.

INTRODUCTION: Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men are disproportionately affected by HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This study explores preferences for different models of sexual health services among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in Australia, using discrete choice experiments (DCEs). METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted from November 2022 to February 2023, targeting three groups: (1) gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men living with HIV; (2) pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) users; and (3) non-PrEP users. How gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men living with HIV experience sexual dysfunction: a thematic analysis of interviews in Montreal, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Sexual dysfunction (SD) is prevalent, yet underaddressed, among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBM) living with HIV. We aimed at exploring the perceived causes and effects of SD from the perspective of Montreal-based GBM with HIV. METHODS: During 2024, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 31 Montreal-based GBM with HIV who experienced SD (reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, premature/delayed ejaculation or pain during sex) in the past 5 years, asking about perceived causes and impacts. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS:

Anxiety responses and testing intentions among gay and bisexual men using an AI-powered HIV/STI risk assessment tool: a quasi-experimental study.

INTRODUCTION: Web-based tools for the assessment of the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STI) may increase testing but also may induce anxiety. We evaluated anxiety responses and testing intentions among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) using MySTIRisk, an artificial intelligence-powered STI risk assessment tool, compared to a standard sexual health information webpage for GBMSMs. METHODS: We conducted a quasi-experimental pre-post study at the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre between April and October 2024. Participants were allocated to either MySTIRisk, which

Black social media influencers engage higher percentages of Black gay and bisexual men in online outreach for HIV prevention research relative to paid ads.

BACKGROUND: Influencer-based social media marketing campaigns are a popular strategy to engage customers in many non-research industries (e.g., retail), but have been increasingly used in public health campaigns to reach and engage specific populations. However, few studies have directly compared the performance of influencer-based marketing with other ad strategies (e.g., paid ads) in achieving these goals. METHODS: From March to September 2023, we conducted an influencer-focused marketing campaign in which we identified and partnered with predominantly Black LGBTQ + influencers in the Unite

Interventions, Barriers, and Facilitators to Address the Sexual Problems of Gay, Bisexual and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men Living with HIV: A Rapid Scoping Review.

Sexual problems are common among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) after diagnosis with HIV. However, these are often overlooked in care and research, where sexual risk reduction and biomedical aspects of sexual health tend to dominate. We conducted a rapid scoping review to investigate which sexual problems of GBM living with HIV are addressed by interventions, and the barriers and facilitators to their implementation. Literature from high-income countries published in English since 2010 was reviewed. Medline, Embase, PsycInfo, and Scopus databases were searched on July

Exploring the intersections of sexual stigma, poverty and mental health in HIV-negative gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in the United States.

Stigma related to non-heteronormative behavior remains a major challenge associated with mental health disparities among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM). Economic hardship worsens these challenges, and characterizing these interactions can help inform effective mental health interventions for GBM. Using 2018 and 2019 American Men's Internet Survey data, we assessed population heterogeneity in sexual stigma experiences among adult, HIV-negative GBM using latent class analysis. We estimated associations between stigma patterns and mental health outcomes (psychological di

"What if I get sick, where shall I go?": a qualitative investigation of healthcare engagement among young gay and bisexual men in Nairobi, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Globally, young gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (YMSM) experience a disproportionate burden of disease compared to young heterosexual men and older MSM. However, YMSM experience major inequities in access and use of health services. We sought to gain a detailed understanding of YMSM's healthcare engagement experiences across public, private, tertiary institution-based and MSM-friendly health facilities in Nairobi, Kenya, to inform development of interventions to improve access and use of health services by YMSM. METHODS: In September 2021, in-person qualitative i

Mpox Diagnosis, Behavioral Risk Modification, and Vaccination Uptake among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men, United Kingdom, 2022.

During the 2022 multicountry mpox outbreak, the United Kingdom identified cases beginning in May. UK cases increased in June, peaked in July, then rapidly declined after September 2022. Public health responses included community-supported messaging and targeted mpox vaccination among eligible gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). Using data from an online survey of GBMSM during November-December 2022, we examined self-reported mpox diagnoses, behavioral risk modification, and mpox vaccination offer and uptake. Among 1,333 participants, only 35 (2.6%) ever tested mpox-posi

Risk of Primary Incident Hepatitis C Infection Following Bacterial Sexually Transmissible Infections Among Gay and Bisexual Men in Australia From 2016 to 2020.

BACKGROUND: In Australia, the incidence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) has declined among gay and bisexual men (GBM) with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) since 2015 and is low among GBM using HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP). However, ongoing HCV testing and treatment remains necessary to sustain this. To assess the potential utility of sexually transmissible infections (STIs) to inform HCV testing among GBM with HIV and GBM using PrEP, we examined the association between bacterial STI diagnoses and subsequent primary HCV infection. METHODS: Data were from a national network of 46 clinics pa

Impact of pre-exposure prophylaxis uptake among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men in urban centers in Brazil: a modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) in Brazil remain disproportionately affected by HIV. We estimated the potential incidence reduction by five years with increased uptake of publicly-funded, daily, oral tenofovir/emtricitabine (TDF/FTC) for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among MSM using the Cost Effectiveness of Preventing AIDS Complications microsimulation model. We used national data, local studies, and literature to inform model parameters for three cities: Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, and Manaus. RESULTS: In Rio de Janero, a PrEP intervention achieving 10% uptake within 60 mont

Qualitative analysis of Canadian blood and plasma donors' views on expanding donor screening eligibility for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND: In many countries, sexually active gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) continue to be screened based on their sex or gender and the sex or gender of their sexual partner. However, there is growing support that screening based on specific sexual behaviors that pose risk of transfusion transmissible infection is a better approach to donor screening. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This paper reports results from Phase 1 (qualitative) of a mixed-methods study on Canadian blood and plasma donors' views on expanding eligibility for gbMSM by changing to sexual behavior-b

Trends in Testing and Self-Reported Diagnoses of Sexually Transmitted Infections in Gay and Bisexual Men in Australia, 2017 to 2021: Analysis of National Behavioral Surveillance Surveys.

BACKGROUND: Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) are overrepresented in diagnoses of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) relative to their population size. This study assessed trends in STI testing and diagnoses among GBM in Australia. METHODS: The Gay Community Periodic Surveys are repeated cross-sectional behavioral surveillance surveys of GBM. Participants reported the number of anal swabs, throat swabs, urine samples, and blood tests for syphilis they undertook in the last year. "Frequent comprehensive testing" was defined as ≥3 of each test in the previous year. Pa

Mechanisms linking distal minority stress and depressive symptoms in a longitudinal, population-based study of gay and bisexual men: A test and extension of the psychological mediation framework.

OBJECTIVE: Gay and bisexual men have significantly higher rates of depression than heterosexual men. The minority stress theory (Meyer, 2003) proposed that distal minority stressors, like interpersonal discrimination, contribute to this disparity. The psychological mediation framework (Hatzenbuehler, 2009) posited several psychosocial mechanisms through which distal minority stress creates elevations in depression among sexual minorities. Despite accumulating support for this framework, there are a number of limitations to existing research, including largely relying on cross-sectional designs
