Postoperative recovery from unilateral blindness caused by tuberculum sellae meningioma.

A 47-year-old female had noticed diminished visual acuity in both eyes 2 months previously. The patient had vision loss (no light perception … d in comparison with the preoperative one. Our case demonstrated the possibility of a recovery from blindness.

Perspective-taking in blindness: electrophysiological evidence of altered action representations.

It is well established that the mental simulation of actions involves visual and/or somatomotor representations of those imagined actions. To investigate whether the total absence of vision affects the brain activity associated with the retrieval of motor representations, we recorded the readiness potential (RP), a marker of motor preparation preceding the execution, as well as the motor imagery of the right middle-finger extension in the first-person (1P; imagining oneself performing the movement) and in the third-person (3P; imagining the experimenter performing the movement) modes in 19 sig

Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome causing blindness in a child.

Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome, the result of a mutation in the gene encoding tumor protein p63, causes ocular surface disease. It is typically progressive, with vision loss in adulthood. We present a case of severe corneal disease, glaucoma, and blindness related to ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome in a 3-year-old female patient.

Transient cortical blindness and successful recovery after coronary bypass surgery.

Left ventricular injury has a bad prognosis, especially when a coronary artery is involved. After perforation of the left cardiac ventricle by a knife, a 19-year-old male patient presented with: (i) complete bilateral visual loss; (ii) left anterior descending (LAD) artery injury; (iii) severe systemic hypotension. Under emergency conditions and cardiopulmonary bypass, the LAD artery was revascularized by a saphenous vein graft. Bilateral blindness recovered within several days. Cerebral hypoxia as a result of severe systemic hypotension was the most likely underlying mechanism.

Cerebral venous thrombosis presenting with cerebellar ataxia and cortical blindness.

Venous infarction in the cerebellum has been reported only rarely, probably because of the abundant venous collateral drainage in this region. Bilateral occipital infarction is a rare cause of visual loss in cerebral venous thrombosis. We describe a 50-year-old woman with a history of ulcerative colitis who developed acute cerebellar ataxia and cortical blindness. She had bilateral cerebellar and occipital lesions related to sigmoid venous thrombosis and achieved complete recovery with anticoagulation therapy. Cerebral venous thrombosis should be considered in cases of simultaneous cerebellar …

Cataract remains an important cause of blindness in Campinas, Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of blindness in the elderly population of Campinas, Brazil, and to describe the coverage and quality of cataract surgery services in the area. METHODS: A brief assessment of cataract surgery services (using the "RACSS" (Rapid Assessment of Cataract Surgical Services Method) was conducted using random cluster sampling, with a sample composed of 60 clusters of 40 people aged 50 years or older. Visual acuity (VA) was measured and the lens status observed by direct visual ophthalmoscopy. From the selected sample of 2,400 subjects, 92.67% were examined. RESUL…

Risk factors for maternal night blindness in rural South India.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify risk factors associated with maternal night blindness in rural South India. METHODS: At delivery, women enrolled in a population-based trial of newborn vitamin A supplementation were asked whether they were night blind at any time during the pregnancy. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify socioeconomic, demographic, and pregnancy-related factors associated with maternal night blindness. RESULTS: Women reported night blindness in 687 (5.2%) of 13,171 pregnancies. In a multivariate model, having a concrete roof (Odds Ratio (OR): 0.60, 95% …

Causes of childhood blindness at ECWA Eye Hospital, Kano, Nigeria.

The study aimed at identifying the causes of childhood blindness at ECWA Eye Hospital, Kano. The causes of visual loss in 31 consecutive patients aged < or = 16 years who attended the ECWA eye Hospital between 1993 and 1996, who had vision of < 3/60 in the better eye were recorded. The eyes were examined with a slit lamp or flashlight a loupe, and an ophthalmoscope. The intraocular pressure was taken with either a Schiotz or an applanation tonometer. There were 14 males (45.0%), the mean age was 6 years; range: 1 to 15 years. Corneal causes were responsible for blindness in 54.8%. Measles was …

Blindness as a complication of monobloc frontofacial advancement with distraction.

The monobloc frontofacial osteotomy provides aesthetic and functional improvement in the treatment of various craniofacial deformities. This … d procedure was performed to push back the frontal bandeau, maintaining the device in position. The blindness was resolved with this procedure as well as treatment with systemic steroids. The distraction was started thereafter, and the desired improvement was acquired. To our knowledge, this is the first case of transient bilateral amaurosis in a patient un …

Preventing blindness in retinal disease: ciliary neurotrophic factor intraocular implants.

A recent phase I trial of an encapsulated cell therapy device that delivers ciliary neurotrophic factor has shown the potential of this approach in the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa. As experience with this device is gained, other retinal degenerative disorders may be potential targets of a similar therapeutic approach.

[Oguchi disease or stationary congenital night blindness: a case report].

INTRODUCTION: Oguchi disease, originally described in Japanese people, is a rare form of stationary night blindness in patients with normal acuity. OBSERVATION: We report the case of an 8-year-old girl who presented with an abnormal terrified behavior in the dark. Thorough questioning revealed hemeralopia. Her clinical examination (visual acuity, Goldmann visual field, and color vision) were normal. The fundus examination showed golden-brown color, grayish, almost greenish yellow discoloration in the peripheral area with no osteoclast. This abnormality disappeared after prolonged dark adaptat…

[Monocular blindness as the first symptom of Churg-Strauss syndrome].

BACKGROUND: Ocular involvement is considered to be less frequent in Churg-Strauss syndrome than in other vasculitides. CASE: We describe the case of a patient who presented with monocular blindness due to central retinal artery occlusion, as the first symptom of Churg-Strauss syndrome. DISCUSSION: Acute loss of vision in a patient with hypereosinophilia should suggest Churg-Strauss syndrome, among other diagnoses. Rapid and appropriate treatment to prevent the extension of the vasculitic process is essential.

[Childhood blindness. VISION 2020 and experiences in an African city].

The struggle against childhood blindness is being given high priority by the WHO. In regions of the world countries where the income per head is low there are 5 times as many blind children as in wealthy countries (1.5/1000 vs 0.3/1000 children). In developing countries cataract is regarded as the main cause of blindness in both childhood and adulthood. If all cataracts that would lead to blindness were operated on, despite a comparatively smaller number of affected persons a similar number of sighted life-years could be achieved throughout the world to that for patients with senile cataract. …

Unilateral blindness as a complication of nasal septoplasty: case report.

Blindness as a complication of nasal septoplasty is a devastating occurrence with only a few cases reported in the literature. In most of these cases, visual loss was attributed to retinal embolism following intra-arterial injection of substances into the nasal turbinate. This paper documents one case of complete unilateral blindness from direct optic nerve trauma following an apparently uneventful septorhinoplasty. Ophthalmologists and otolaryngologists should therefore be aware of the possible occurrence of such complication.
