Three children are described in whom pre-transfusion samples were HIV-seronegative and post-transfusional samples, obtained within 1 week after transfusion, were HIV-seropositive. Two of them developed a transient fever within 1 week of receiving the blood transfusion, and a transient generalized skin eruption which lasted for about 2 weeks. All three developed persistent generalized lymphadenopathy. One child developed a lumbar herpes zoster 7 months after transfusion. IgM Western blots demonstrated the presence of antibodies to protein bands p17, p24 and p55 in all three children. These thre…

Red cell enzyme deficiency disease states are reviewed to outline the requirements for transfusion therapy in the neonatal period, during spontaneous crises, drug or infection-induced crises and chronic anemia.

The authors report on 52 cases of acute normovolemic hemodilution carried out in the course of surgical operations planned in advance in the period from February to September, 1975. In this connection questions of method, indication and contro-indication as well as juridical and economic aspects are dealt with discussion. The advantages of acute normavolemic hemodilution by transfusing the patient's own blood taken from him some days before the operation are particularly stressed.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the need for screening of transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) in blood products, we assessed TTI seroprevalence … HEV and HTLV-1/2) and blood screening programs will contribute to the future adoption of scientific blood transfusion methods.

Patient blood management (PBM) is a patient-centered, evidence-based approach aimed at improving outcomes by optimizing and preserving a patient's own blood, particularly when transfusion support is limited. We report a 76-year-old female with congestive heart failure and severe mitral stenosis presenting with severe iron deficiency anemia. Transfusion was not feasible due to an alloantibody against a high-frequency antigen (HFA), later identified as anti‑Inᵇ in a rare In(b-) phenotype. The patient was managed conservatively using PBM principles, including intravenous iron therapy, minimizatio

Objectives The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of autologous blood transfusion on the requirement of allogeneic blood products and the change in hemoglobin levels in open heart procedures. Patients and methods The study included 59 patients who underwent open heart procedures from July 2020 to August 2022. Group 1 (35 patients) received an autologous blood transfusion, and group 2 (24 patients) did not receive an autologous transfusion. The requirement of allogeneic blood components and other demographic and clinical parameters were compared between the two groups. Results In the a…

BACKGROUND: There are some theoretical concerns for the use of intraoperative cell salvage (ICS) in patients with ectopic pregnancy. This study aimed to observe the impact of ICS on the coagulation function and clinical outcomes of patients with ruptured ectopic pregnancy and severe blood loss.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 225 patients with ruptured ectopic pregnancy and severe blood loss treated at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University between January 2012 and May 2016. Patients were grouped according to ICS (n = 116) and controls (n = 109, allogenic trans

BACKGROUND: An adverse transfusion reaction (ATR) is an unfavorable reaction to the transfused unit, the severity of which may be different among individuals depending upon the type of reaction and the patient's susceptibility. Transfusion reactions may be immediate or delayed type depending on the onset and immune or nonimmune type depending on the pathogenesis. A study was conducted to study the frequency of various transfusion reactions and the associated morbidity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All ATRs occurring over a period of 3 years at a tertiary care health center were studied in detail ac

A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted in the regional center of blood transfusion in Bouaké from December 1, 2001 to February 28, 2002. One thousand two hundred thirty one new blood donors were tested. HBs Antigen detection was made according to ELISA technique (Hepanostika HBs Ag Uni-Form II). HBs Antigen prevalence in blood donors in Bouaké was 12.5%. One hundred fifty four blood donors were tested positive and were divided into 131 males (85%) and 23 females (15%). Their average age was 27, 5 years old (18-65 years). HBs Antigen carriage rate was lower in females and students. T…

BACKGROUND: Collection of 50 mL of blood (standard unit) in cats is a common procedure. There are several studies on the health status of donors, but to our knowledge there are no reports on the effects of blood collection on the feline donor.
HYPOTHESIS: Collection of a standard unit of blood from cats does not significantly change arterial blood pressure (BP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), systolic arterial pressure (SAP), diastolic arterial pressure (DAP), PCV, and heart rate (HR) in healthy blood donor cats.
ANIMALS: Twenty-six healthy blood donor cats (6 spayed females and 20 castrated

The blood supply is safer than it has been at any other time in recent history, and, in the context of other health care-related adverse events, the risks associated with blood transfusion are extremely small. The current high level of safety is the result of successive refinements and improvements in how blood is collected, tested, processed, and transfused; nonetheless, blood and plasma products remain vulnerable to newly identified or reemerging infections. In recent years, numerous infectious agents-including several newly discovered hepatitis viruses, the agents of transmissible spongifor…
