Body mass index and weight loss in patients submitted to orthognathic surgery: a prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the body mass index (BMI) and the weight loss (WL) in patients with dentofacial deformities who underwent monomaxillary versus bimaxillary orthognathic surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective longitudinal study included 69 patients with dentofacial deformities who underwent surgical orthodontic treatment. Patients were divided into two groups according to the type of orthognathic surgery: monomaxillary or bimaxillary. A preoperative nutritional assessment based on BMI was performed; the percentage of involuntary WL between the preoperative and postoperative peri

Body weight changes and associated predictors in a prospective cohort of young breast cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Weight gain after a breast cancer diagnosis is common and is associated with inferior outcomes. Young survivors may be especially susceptible to weight changes given the impact of treatment on menopausal status. METHODS: The authors identified women who were diagnosed with stage 0 to III breast cancer at age 40 years or younger between 2006 and 2016 from a multicenter prospective cohort. Self-reported weight was collected at diagnosis and at 1 year and 3 years postdiagnosis. Tumor and treatment data were obtained from medical records and patient surveys. Multinomial logistic regre

American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) weight gain in captivity and implications for captive reptile body condition.

The body condition of an animal is an indicator of health status and is dependent upon many factors, some of which can vary between wild and captive settings. Despite this, there have not been many studies on how captivity affects body condition relative to wild animal populations. This study explores the body condition of captive and wild American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) because reptiles are frequently overlooked in studies of captive animal health and because alligators are well-represented in captivity. We collected body condition data from 209 captive alligators and 935 wil

Transient receptor potential cation channel 6 deficiency leads to increased body weight and metabolic dysfunction.

Transient receptor potential cation channel 6 (TRPC6), a member of the TRPC family, is expressed in the hypothalamus and modulates cell Ca2+ … control mice, and BP responses to air-jet stress were attenuated in TRPC6 KO mice despite increased body weight and metabolic disorders that normally raise BP and increase BP responses to stress. Our results provide evidence for a novel and important role of TRPC6 in controlling energy balance, adiposity, and glucose homeostasis, which suggests that normal TR …

Increased Total Serum Bilirubin Level Post-Ibuprofen Use Is Inversely Correlated with Neonates' Body Weight.

Backgrounds: Drugs with the ability to displace bilirubin from albumin-binding sites subsequently leading to an increased bilirubin level may cause hyperbilirubinemia in neonates. Ibuprofen is commonly used to treat patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in neonates, yet the use of ibuprofen has drawn mixed conclusions. We performed a retrospective study to determine how ibuprofen use influences the total serum bilirubin (TSB) level in neonates of differing birth weight (BW). Materials and methods: Neonates (including premature infants) born at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan during January 2004

Misalignment between perceptual boundaries and weight categories reflects a new normal for body size perception.

Combatting the current global epidemic of obesity requires that people have a realistic understanding of what a healthy body size looks like. This is a particular issue in different population sub-groups, where there may be increased susceptibility to obesity-related diseases. Prior research has been unable to systematically assess body size judgement due to a lack of attention to gender and race; our study aimed to identify the contribution of these factors. Using a data-driven multi-variate decision tree approach, we varied the gender and race of image stimuli used, and included the same div

Dieting and Disinhibited Eating Patterns in Adult Women with Normal Body Weight: Does Rumination Matter?

Dieting and disinhibited eating patterns are presented in both clinical and nonclinical samples. Repetitive negative thinking (i.e., rumination) may lead to maladaptive eating behaviors. While numerous studies have focused on dieting and disinhibited eating behaviors in clinical samples, less is known about these behaviors in nonclinical samples with normal body weight. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore how dieting, uncontrolled eating and emotional eating are related to rumination in adult women with normal body weight. One hundred eighty-eight women (Mage = 29.46 ± 8.94; MBMI = 2…

Effects and Mechanisms of Vagal Nerve Stimulation on Body Weight in Diet-Induced Obese Rats.

BACKGROUND: Vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) has recently been indicated as a novel method for treating obesity. However, the optimal stimulation parameters were unknown and mechanisms were poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of VNS on food intake and body weight in diet-induced obesity (DIO) rats and its possible mechanism involving autonomic functions and gut hormones. METHODS: Ten control rats and 16 DIO rats were chronically implanted with one pair of electrodes in the subdiaphragmatic vagal nerve. VNS with different stimulation parameters and sham-VNS wer…

MetAP2 inhibition reduces food intake and body weight in a ciliopathy mouse model of obesity.

The ciliopathies Bardet-Biedl syndrome and Alström syndrome are genetically inherited pleiotropic disorders with hyperphagia and obesity as primary clinical features. Methionine aminopeptidase 2 inhibitors (MetAP2i) have been shown in preclinical and clinical studies to reduce food intake, body weight, and adiposity. Here, we investigated the effects of MetAP2i administration in a mouse model of ciliopathy produced by conditional deletion of the Thm1 gene in adulthood. Thm1 conditional knockout (cko) mice showed decreased hypothalamic proopiomelanocortin expression as well as hyperphagia, obes…

Energy and protein dilution in broiler breeder pullet diets reduced offspring body weight and yield.

The objective of the current research was to evaluate transgenerational effects of maternal dietary energy and protein on growth, efficiency, and yield of broiler offspring. A factorial arrangement of treatments consisting of high and low ME and CP levels fed during the rearing and laying phases was used. The study was a final 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments, including broiler sex. Ross 708 broiler breeder pullets (n = 933) were fed diets containing 2,736 (HEREAR) or 2,528 kcal/kg ME (LEREAR) with either 15.3% (HPREAR) or 13.7% CP (LPREAR). From 25 wk, dams were fed a 15% CP

Association between body weight and proximal tibial bone mineral density after bilateral total knee arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Proximal tibial bone mineral density (BMD) has been studied for its potential impact on subsidence and loosening of the tibial component after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, no known studies of proximal tibial BMD after TKA have evaluated the effect of major impact factors such as body weight (BW), muscle strength, and level of activity. We aim to determine whether factors such as level of activity, quadriceps strength, BW, gender, age, and prosthetic design affect proximal tibial BMD over the mid- to long-term following TKA. METHODS: We evaluated 36 patients (72 knees) w…

Cholesterol oversynthesis markers define familial combined hyperlipidemia versus other genetic hypercholesterolemias independently of body weight.

Primary hypercholesterolemia of genetic origin, negative for mutations in LDLR, APOB, PCSK9 and APOE genes (non-FH GH), and familial combined hyperlipidemia (FCHL) are polygenic genetic diseases that occur with hypercholesterolemia, and both share a very high cardiovascular risk. In order to better characterize the metabolic abnormalities associated with these primary hypercholesterolemias, we used noncholesterol sterols, as markers of cholesterol metabolism, to determine their potential differences. Hepatic cholesterol synthesis markers (desmosterol and lanosterol) and intestinal cholesterol
