Effects of vitamin D on insulin resistance and myosteatosis in diet-induced obese mice.

Epidemiological studies pointed out to a strong association between vitamin D deficiency and type 2 diabetes prevalence. However, the role of vitamin D supplementation in the skeletal muscle, a tissue that play a crucial role in the maintenance of glucose homeostasis, has been scarcely investigated so far. On this basis, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of vitamin D supplementation in a murine model of diet-induced insulin resistance with particular attention to the effects evoked on the skeletal muscle. Male C57BL/6J mice (n = 40) were fed with a control or a High Fat-High Sugar (HFHS)

Phenobarbital pharmacokinetics in neonates and infants during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

INTRODUCTION: The disposition of drugs is potentially changed due to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in neonates and infants. METHODS: The aim of the study was to evaluate the individual pharmacokinetics (PK) of phenobarbital and the effect of PK covariates in neonates and infants undergoing ECMO. Sixteen patients (7 neonates, 9 infants) treated with phenobarbital during ECMO (centrifugal-flow pump circuits) were enrolled in the PK study. Phenobarbital serum concentrations were measured using a fluorescence polarization immunoassay. Individual PK parameters - volume of distribution

The effect of glucagon-like peptide-1 in the management of diabetes mellitus: cellular and molecular mechanisms.

Incretins, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP)-1, have been shown to elevate plasma insulin concentration. The purpose of this study is to investigate the cellular and molecular basis of the beneficial effects of GLP-1. Normal and diabetic male Wistar rats were treated with GLP-1 (50 ng/kg body weight) for 10 weeks. At the end of the experiment, pancreatic tissues were taken for immunohistochemistry, immunoelectron microscopy and real-time polymerase chain reaction studies. Samples of blood were retrieved from the animals for the measurement of enzymes and insulin. The results show that trea

The relationship of presurgical Personality Assessment Inventory scales to BMI following bariatric surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Notwithstanding the efficacy of bariatric surgery in reducing the negative sequelae of obesity, psychological factors may play a significant role in long-term weight maintenance following surgery. Previous research on these factors has shown mixed outcomes, indicating the need for further study in samples undergoing bariatric surgery. METHOD: This study evaluated archival data for 194 patients from a single-payer system for a 60-month period following bariatric surgery to examine how presurgical scores on the Personality Assessment Inventory predict body mass index (BMI) over time.

Iatrogenic biological fracture of the cervical spine during gradual halo traction for kyphotic deformity correction: case report.

BACKGROUND: Severe kyphotic deformities carry high risk for neurological injuries as osteotomies are often required for correction. Surgeons often utilize a staged approach for dealing with these conditions starting with a period of halo traction to stretch tight soft tissues and partially correct the deformity, followed by surgery. Halo traction is a relatively safe procedure and complications are uncommon. We report a unique case of iatrogenic fracture of the cervical spine during gradual halo traction for deformity correction of a severe cervical kyphosis. CASE PRESENTATION: An 80-year-old

Feeding patterns and growth trajectories in breast-fed and formula-fed infants during the introduction of complementary food.

Introduction: several investigations have identified breastfeeding as a protective factor for rapid infant weight gain and childhood obesity while other studies have found that this protective effect could be the result of confounding factors. Objectives: to assess the associations between lactation practices (breast-fed vs formula-fed infants) during the introduction of complementary food period, as well as the following: a) patterns of food intake; and b) trajectories of growth at six, nine and 12 months (z-score of weight, height and body mass index [BMI] and changes in these z-scores from

Interplay between cognition and weight reduction in individuals following a Mediterranean Diet: Three-year follow-up of the PREDIMED-Plus trial.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Some cognitive profiles might facilitate successful weight loss and its maintenance. Also, weight reductions may result in cognitive benefits. However, little work to date has examined the interactions between cognition and weight changes in the context of interventions with the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet). We studied the within-subject longitudinal relationships between cognition, body mass index (BMI), physical activity (PA), and quality of life (QoL), in older adults following a MedDiet. METHODS: The PREDIMED-Plus is a primary prevention trial testing the effect of a li

Healthy weight regulation and eating disorder prevention in high school students: a universal and targeted Web-based intervention.

BACKGROUND: Given the rising rates of obesity in children and adolescents, developing evidence-based weight loss or weight maintenance interventions that can be widely disseminated, well implemented, and are highly scalable is a public health necessity. Such interventions should ensure that adolescents establish healthy weight regulation practices while also reducing eating disorder risk. OBJECTIVE: This study describes an online program, StayingFit, which has two tracks for universal and targeted delivery and was designed to enhance healthy living skills, encourage healthy weight regulation,

Effectiveness and cost of integrating a pragmatic pathway for prescribing liraglutide 3.0 mg in obesity services (STRIVE study): study protocol of an open-label, real-world, randomised, controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: In the UK and Ireland, severe and complex obesity is managed in specialist weight management services (SWMS), which provide multicomponent lifestyle interventions to support weight loss, and use of medication if available. Liraglutide 3 mg (LIRA 3 mg) is an effective weight-loss medication, but weight loss in individual patients is variable, and its efficacy has not been assessed in SWMS. This study aims to investigate whether a targeted prescribing pathway for LIRA 3 mg with multiple prespecified stopping rules could help people with severe obesity and established complications

Examining the efficacy of a multicomponent m-Health physical activity, diet and sleep intervention for weight loss in overweight and obese adults: randomised controlled trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Traditional behavioural weight loss trials targeting improvements in physical activity and diet are modestly effective. It has been suggested that sleep may have a role in weight loss and maintenance. Improving sleep health in combination with physical activity and dietary behaviours may be one strategy to enhance traditional behavioural weight loss trials. Yet the efficacy of a weight loss intervention concurrently targeting improvements in physical activity, dietary and sleep behaviours remains to be tested. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The primary aim of this three-arm randomised co

Clinical Relevance of Fluid Volume Status Assessment by Bioimpedance Spectroscopy in Children Receiving Maintenance Hemodialysis or Peritoneal Dialysis.

Bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) is a noninvasive method used to evaluate body fluid volume status in dialysis patients, but reports on its effectiveness in pediatrics are scarce. We investigated the correlation between BIS and clinical characteristics and identified the changes in patients whose dialysis prescription was modified based on BIS. The medical records of children on maintenance dialysis who had undergone BIS between 2017 and 2019 were reviewed. Of the 49 patients, 14 were overhydrated, based on the >15% proportion of overhydration relative to extracellular water (OH/ECW) measured b

[Intensive training and menstrual disorders in young female: Impact on bone mass].

Participation in recreational physical activity is widely acknowledged to provide significant health benefits. Conversely, intense training imposes several constraints, such as intermittent or chronic metabolic and psychogenic training stressors and maintenance of very low body fat to maximize performance. Adolescent and adult athletic women are therefore at risk of overtraining and/or poor dietary intake, which may have several consequences for endocrine function particularly on hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Female athletes, particularly those participating in sports needing leanness o

Humane Endpoints in Swiss Webster Mice Infected with Toxoplasma gondii RH Strain.

The highly virulent Toxoplasma gondii RH strain is maintained through successive passages in mice, but there is still a lack of studies that refine these procedures from a 3Rs perspective, where humanitarian ideals aim to minimize the stress, pain, or suffering of the animals used in the research without the loss of results. The aim of this study was to establish humane endpoints in Swiss Webster mice inoculated with the T. gondii RH strain. A total of 52 mice were infected with 5 × 106 tachyzoites/mL and monitored for periods of up to 5 days. The parameters body weight; hair condition; higher
