[Minimally Invasive Cancellous Bone Graft Harvesting in Trauma Indication - Clinical Part of the Study].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The clinical prospective study presents the results of minimally invasive harvesting of cancellous bone tissue in trauma indications. We focused on evaluating the clinical outcomes of this technique, particularly on the amount of cancellous bone harvested, the effectiveness of its use and complications. The pain in the bone graft harvest site is evaluated and compared with the pain after a standard harvest from the iliac crest. MATERIAL AND METHODS All the patients aged 18-90 years, in whom cancellous bone was harvested by minimally invasive technique using a bone cutter w

Insertion of midline catheters in critically ill patients with limb trauma and fractures: Feasibility and case report.

This article reports a critically ill patient with extremity fractures caused by a traffic accident. Given the severity of the patient's condition and the specific nature of the fractures, after a thorough evaluation of the fracture sites, a midline catheter was placed in the affected side's upper arm through ultrasound guidance as a vascular access solution. The catheter was safely retained for 63 days, completing the entire treatment cycle without any related complications, providing stable and reliable vascular access support for the patient's overall treatment. This case demonstrates the f

Characteristics of upper extremity injuries sustained by falling during snowboarding: a study of 1918 cases.

BACKGROUND: Little epidemiological research on characteristics of upper extremity injuries resulting from snowboarding has been conducted, particularly in relation to snowboarding stance, falling direction, and the side of the body where the injury occurs. HYPOTHESIS: Snowboarding stance and the direction of the fall may influence the frequency of the side or the location of the upper extremity injury. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study. METHODS: This study analyzed the information obtained from 1918 patients with fractures or dislocations of the upper extremity (excluding the fin

Golf injuries of the upper extremity.

Golf has demonstrated increasing popularity and with this heightened enthusiasm has come an increased awareness of the significant number of injuries associated with playing golf. While back injuries represent the most commonly injured specific body part, upper extremity injuries are most frequent overall and the most likely to result in loss of play. Patterns of injury differ based on level of play and time spent playing or practicing golf. Among golf professionals, the hand/wrist is the most commonly injured upper extremity structure. Among amateurs, the elbow is most commonly injured. The v

Acute pain management in trauma: anatomy, ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blocks and special considerations.

Pain is the most common complaint amongst trauma patients throughout the perioperative period. Multimodal analgesia is currently being regarded the mainstay, with regional anesthesia techniques constituting an integral part of it. Ultrasound imaging techniques display a plethora of advantages that have pervaded regional anesthesia practice. In this review, we set out to provide several examples of injuries, to elucidate the precise anatomy of fractured bones (osteotomes), and to elaborate on certain peripheral nerve blocks employed in pain management of trauma patients. Controversies/special c

Surgical anatomy of microsurgical 3-level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion C4-C7.

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is one of the most common spinal procedures, frequently used for the treatment of cervical spine degenerative diseases. It was first described in 1958. Interestingly, to our knowledge, 3-level ACDF has not been previously published as a peer-reviewed video case with a detailed description of intraoperative microsurgical anatomy. In this video, we present the case of a 33-year-old male who presented with a combination of myelopathy (hyperreflexia and long tract signs in the upper and lower extremities) and bilateral radiculopathy of the upper extre

Ulnar ray deficiency: its various manifestations.

Eighty-eight upper extremities of 65 patients with ulnar ray deficiency were reviewed with regard to clinical manifestations. Based on the findings, a subclassification into four types was established: type I, hypoplasia or partial defect of the ulna; type II, total defect of the ulna; type III, total or partial defect of the ulna with humeroradial synostosis; and type IV, ulnar defect with congenital amputation at the wrist. Various manifestations of deficiency were evident not only within the ulnar ray but also in other rays. Hypoplasia of the shoulder and/or proximal part of the humerus was

A variant alkaline phosphatase found in a case of gastric carcinoma with super bone scan.

A rare case of gastric carcinoma associated with increased serum variant alkaline phosphatase activities is presented. A 54 year old man had extremely high serum alkaline phosphatase activity (18,607 U/l) with normal calcium and phosphate concentrations. His bone scintigram showed abnormal findings, 'super bone scan'. He was diagnosed as having Borrmann type 4 gastric carcinoma with diffuse bone metastases by examinations of the upper gastrointestinal tract and iliac bone biopsy. The alkaline phosphatase isozyme of this patient was of the bone type as measured by cellulose acetate membrane ele

[THe Laumonier wax model of the ear (Collections of the Museums of the Anatomy Laboratory of Saints Pères, Paris)].

Authentified by the name of Laumonier (fecit), written on the zygomatic process of the temporal bone, a model in wax of the medial, middle and lateral ears, belongs to the collection of the "Musées Delmas, Orfila et Rouvière" in Paris. This model presents large dimensions with a great anatomical rightness. The entire temporal bone is represented with the upper part of the endocranial petrous bone removed in order to demonstrate the main elements of the internal ear (cochlea and semi-circular canals) and of the middle ear (malleus and incus). Also were represented the temporal muscle and tempor

Composite rib and serratus anterior pedicle transfer for reconstruction of an osteomyelitis of the humerus.

We report the case of a 40 year-old male with Staphylococcus aureus osteomyelitis of the proximal humerus after open reduction and internal fixation of a fracture from motor vehicle accident. Removal of the osteosynthesis, extensive debridement and intravenous antibiotics administration was done followed by external fixation stabilization and reconstruction with a combined pedicled flap using the serratus anterior reversed flap and the 6th rib. At the last follow-up, healing of the bone flap was observed; the patient experienced useful motion of his upper extremity without any evidence of recu

The distal biceps tendon.

Distal biceps tendon ruptures continue to be an important injury seen and treated by upper extremity surgeons. Since the mid-1980s, the emphasis has been placed on techniques that limit complications or improve initial tendon-to-bone fixation strength. Recently, basic science research has expanded the knowledge base regarding the biceps tendon structure, footprint anatomy, and biomechanics. Clinical data have further delineated the results of conservative and surgical management of both partial and complete tears in acute or chronic states. The current literature on the distal biceps tendon is

Liposarcoma involving the periodontal tissues. A case report.

Liposarcomas constitute 15 to 20% of all soft tissue tumors. They are extremely rare in the head and neck and in the oral cavity. A 30-year-old patient was seen for a soft, painless mass in the right palate. Through panoramic radiography it was possible to observe a radiolucent area with sharp margins in the right upper quadrant. The lesion, after an incisional biopsy, was diagnosed as a "myxoid liposarcoma." The patient underwent a wide excision of the lesion with bone laminectomy and he is well at a 4-year follow-up. The differential diagnosis included salivary gland tumors and palatal absce

Limb salvage in malignant tumours of the upper limb using vascularised fibula.

INTRODUCTION: Modern reconstructive techniques can prevent amputation in most cases of malignant musculoskeletal tumours. The free fibula has emerged as the primary method of bridging long bone gaps during limb salvage. METHODS: Limb salvage was attempted in 23 patients (15 males and eight females) aged 17-57 years. The tumour was located in the humerus in 18 patients, radius in four patients and the metacarpals in one patient. Osteogenic sarcoma was the most common tumour (11 cases) followed by Ewing's sarcoma in six patients. After neoadjuvant chemotherapy, MRI was repeated and resectabilit

Trauma-induced Rejection in Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation.

: Vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA) is a relatively new field in reconstructive medicine. Likely a result of the unique tissue composition of these allografts-including skin and often a bone marrow component-the immunology and rejection patterns do not always mimic those of the well-studied solid organ transplantations. While the number and type of VCAs performed is rapidly expanding, there is still much to be discovered and understood in the field. With more patients, new findings and patterns emerge and add to our understanding of VCA. Here, we present a case report of an uppe
