[Apropos of 6 para-esophageal cysts. A discussion about their origins].

Para-oesophageal cyst is a rare lesion which can be classified, by its origin, as a gastrointestinal duplication. It is mostly encountered in children. Since 1977, we have observed 6 cases in adults, and 5 out of 6 presented as postero-inferior mediastinal tumors. Pre-operative diagnosis is difficult: when the lesion is intramural, the only other diagnosis is leiomyoma; in other cases, a bronchogenic cyst or a posterior mediastinal enteric formation can be discussed. Surgical findings and histological criteria allow a precise definition of these cysts, which lie at least partially in the wall …

[The late results of the surgical treatment of congenital anomalies of the bronchopulmonary system in childhood].

The long-term results of operative management in a series of 98 children presenting congenital anomalies of the bronchopulmonary system, aged 6 months to 17 years, are studied. Of the total, 3 children (3.1 per cent) are operated for pulmonary sequestration, 25 (25.5 per cent)--for bronchogenic cysts, 19 (19.3 per cent)--for polycystic conditions, 2 (2.0 per cent)--bronchial stenosis, 18 (18.1 per cent)--infantile (congenital) lobar emphysema, and 30 (31 per cent)--bronchiectasia. Postoperative follow-up period--from 6 months to more than ten years. An overall assessment is done of the results…

Retroperitoneal cystic masses: CT, clinical, and pathologic findings and literature review.

Cystic lesions of the retroperitoneum can be classified as either neoplastic or nonneoplastic. Neoplastic lesions include cystic lymphangioma, mucinous cystadenoma, cystic teratoma, cystic mesothelioma, müllerian cyst, epidermoid cyst, tailgut cyst, bronchogenic cyst, cystic change in solid neoplasms, pseudomyxoma retroperitonei, and perianal mucinous carcinoma. Nonneoplastic lesions include pancreatic pseudocyst, nonpancreatic pseudocyst, lymphocele, urinoma, and hematoma. Because the clinical implications of and therapeutic strategies for retroperitoneal cystic masses vary depending on the c…

[Morphogenesis of cystic abnormalities of the lung].

The material used was the pathomorphological studies of cystic developmental lung defects with consideration of X-ray and clinical data. In total 126 cases have been studied including: 72 cystic lung hypoplasias, 38 solitary cysts, 8 sequestrations, 8 bronchogenic cysts of mediastinum. Cystic hypoplasia revealed branching of cystic cavities and sometimes their connection with respiratory compartments. The other above mentioned defects reveal sometimes the connection between cysts, bronchi and respiratory compartments. Consequently with the formation of cystic developmental lung defects the dev…

Cytologic features of benign solitary pulmonary nodules with radiologic correlation and diagnostic pitfalls: a report of six cases.

BACKGROUND: The solitary pulmonary nodule (SPN) is a common radiologic abnormality often detected incidentally. The majority of SPNs represent benign processes, including granulotmatous inflammation, bronchogenic cysts and hamartomata. However, a solitary nodule may also potentially represent an early stage of lung cancer or a metastasis. Diagnostic procedures such as percutaneous fine needle aspiration biopsy can exclude malignancy in a majority of cases and may eliminate the need for more invasive surgical procedure. Correlation of the findings on the FNAB with radiologic features is helpful…

Middle mediastinal cavernous hemangioma: a case report of clinical, pathologic and radiologic features.

Benign vascular tumors of the mediastinum are rare, representing only 0.5% of all mediastinal masses. Given their rare presentation, they are infrequently considered in the workup of a middle mediastinal mass. We present a unique case describing the clinical, imaging and pathologic characteristics of a middle mediastinal cavernous hemangioma which was initially misdiagnosed as a bronchogenic cyst and ultimately required surgical resection with the use of veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

Association of three different congenital malformations in a same pulmonary lobe in a 5-year-old girl.

We report the case of a 5-year-old girl with persistent chest X-ray abnormalities following an episode of pneumonia who has a complex congenital pulmonary malformation comprising of a congenital pulmonary airway malformation, an intralobar sequestration and two bronchogenic cysts, all present within the same lobe. The observation suggests a common embryological origin of these malformations.

Imaging of congenital lung malformations.

Congenital lung malformations are a heterogeneous group of anomalies that involve the lungs and tracheobronchial tree (congenital airway pulmonary malformation, bronchial atresia, bronchogenic cyst, congenital lobar overinflation, pulmonary cyst, hamartoma, pulmonary isomerism and azygous lobe), vascular abnormalities (arteriovenous malformations, anomalous pulmonary venous return, pulmonary artery sling, interrupted pulmonary artery, pulmonary varix, pulmonary vein stenosis and pulmonary lymphangiectasia), or frequently both entities (pulmonary sequestration, pulmonary maldevelopment and scim…

Computed tomography characterization of anterior mediastinal tumors.

The computed tomography manifestations of 39 patients with histologically proved anterior mediastinal tumors were studied by categorizing the tumors by content as solid homogeneous, cystic homogeneous, and heterogeneous. Among 24 solid tumors, thymomas were easily distinguished by their lack of invasiveness from malignant lymphomas and germ-cell tumors. Among 11 cystic tumors, pericardial and thymic cysts were differentiated from cystic teratomas and bronchogenic cysts by their lack of recognizable capsules with or without calcification. The differential diagnosis of a variety of tumors of the…

[Mediastinal cysts, surgical management].

INTRODUCTION: Mediastinal cysts are common lesions, affecting children, as well as adults. They account for 20-30 % pathological mediastinal masses. The treatment is surgical, including extirpation, respectively enucleation of the cyst. AIM OF THE STUDY: Assessment of the author's patient group and overview of current literature data. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of a group of 11 patients (9 female and2 male subjects, the mean age was 47.6 years) indicated for scheduled procedures for mediastinal cysts from 2006 to 2010. RESULTS: Histological examination confirmed pericardia

A ciliated cyst in the posterior mediastinum compatible with a paravertebral Mullerian cyst.

Several types of cysts in the mediastinum have been described, such as bronchogenic or thymic cysts and esophageal duplications, most of which arise in the middle or posterior mediastinum close to the tracheobronchial system or the esophagus. We present herein the rare case of a ciliated cyst anatomically distant to the genitourinary organs. An abnormal formation in the posterior mediastinum was incidentally detected on chest X-ray during the preoperative evaluation for a herniorrhaphy in a 54-year-old woman who had a negative medical history. The patient exhibited no clinical signs or symptom

Thoracoscopy in the management of anterior mediastinal masses.

Thoracoscopy has been found useful for both the diagnosis and treatment of anterior mediastinal disorders. We have reserved it for use during thymectomy in the management of new-onset myasthenia gravis and for the resection of benign thymic, pericardial, and bronchogenic cysts. The application of thoracoscopic techniques in the anterior mediastinum should be approached conservatively. At this time, we believe it should be limited to diagnostic procedures requiring adequate biopsy and to therapeutic resections in which the extent of the resection is assured and therapeutic efficacy is maintaine…

Polypoid endobronchial lung cyst with bronchoscopic removal: a case report.

Pulmonary bronchogenic cyst in adults is rare and the typical appearance is a sharply circumscribed, round or oval nodule or mass, usually in the medial third of the lungs. Bronchial polyps are rare histopathologically distinct nonneoplastic endobronchial lesions and are classified as multiple papillomas, solitary papillomas, and inflammatory polyps. We herein report a patient with polypoid endobronchial lung cyst. A 68-yr-old woman presented with a discomfort and pain in the right upper chest of four weeks' duration. Chest radiography revealed a cystic lesion in the right upper lung. Computed…

The American lung fluke, Paragonimus kellicotti, in a cat model.

Twenty-four specific-pathogen-free domestic cats were infected orally with from 2 to 30 Paragonimus kellicotti metacercariae and followed for 2-61 wk. Following infection by metacercarial cysts dissected from crayfish, the lungs of the cats undergo changes of intense eosinophilic pneumonia, granulomatous pneumonitis, squamous epithelial-lined cyst formation of bronchogenic origin, and finally (late in infection) partial resolution of the host response. Bronchograms and mechanical probing illustrate the patency of cyst communication with bronchi. The modulation of the host response and adaptive

Factors affecting the preoperative diagnosis of anterior mediastinal cysts.

OBJECTIVE: Although anterior mediastinal cysts are generally benign diseases, the preoperative diagnosis of these lesions is not necessarily accurate. This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting the preoperative diagnosis of anterior mediastinal cysts. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 35 patients with pathologically diagnosed anterior mediastinal cysts (20 thymic cysts, 7 bronchogenic cysts, 5 pericardial cysts, and 3 others) that were resected at our hospital and evaluated their preoperative diagnosis, cyst size, and fluid content. RESULTS: Eighteen, 15, 1, and 1 …

Intraspinal endodermal cyst: ultrastructural study of abnormal cilia.

Abnormal cilia were demonstrated in the lining epithelial cells of three cases of intraspinal endodermal (bronchogenic) cyst. The changes comprised a wide spectrum of ultrastructural abnormalities, including (a). cilia with abnormal axonemal microtubules, (b). swollen cilia, (c). compound cilia with or without excessive ciliary matrix, (d). naked cilia without limiting membrane, and (e). intracytoplasmic cilia and aggregates of microtubules. Of these, compound cilia and swollen cilia were most common. Cilia with dynein arm deficiency were not observed. Ciliary abnormalities found in the presen
