Effects of Mosquito coil Smoke Inhalation on Spatial Memory in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito coil (MC) is widely used to repel mosquitoes in order to prevent malaria in many malaria-endemic countries. Although we are fully aware and concerned about carbon monoxide (CO) and its toxicity, exposure to CO from common, though occult sources like MC smoke is often overlooked. Equally, the adverse health effects, especially to the brain, are usually underestimated. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of exposure to CO from MC smoke inhalation on spatial memory in mice. METHODS: Sixteen, adult, male, mice, were randomly assigned to either the experimental or the control gr

Non-necrotizing granulomatous pneumonitis and chronic pleuritis in soldiers deployed to Southwest Asia.

AIMS: Reports of respiratory illnesses among soldiers returning from Southwest Asia have been described. During deployment to Southwest Asia, soldiers are exposed to various respiratory hazards, including dust storms, smoke from burn pits and industrial air pollutants. A few studies have reported increased rates of constrictive bronchiolitis and asthma in these patients. We sought to expand upon the pathological findings in this cohort. METHODS AND RESULTS: Lung biopsies from veterans of Southwest Asia were identified and re-reviewed. All patients had undergone pulmonary function tests and ch

Iatrogenic pediatric hydroxocobalamin overdose.

INTRODUCTION: Hydroxocobalamin, a precursor molecule to vitamin B12, has emerged as the preferred empiric treatment for patients rescued from enclosed-space fires with concern for inhalational injury and potential concomitant cyanide toxicity. Limited data exist on the effects of hydroxocobalamin toxicity, particularly in pediatric patients. CASE REPORT: We report a case of a healthy three-year old girl who was rescued from an apartment fire and electively intubated by prehospital providers. Due to concern for potential cyanide toxicity, she received 5 g (373 mg/kg) of intravenous hydroxocoba

High-Dose Ascorbic Acid for Burn Shock Resuscitation May Not Improve Outcomes.

High dose ascorbic acid (HDAA) has been touted to ameliorate inflammation and reduce fluid requirements during burn shock resuscitation (BSR). Whether this leads to improved outcomes is not known. The authors' aim for this study was to compare ventilator days, ventilator-associated pneumonia, and mortality between patients who did and did not receive HDAA during BSR.The authors performed a retrospective case control study from 2012 to 2015. They identified 38 patients (HDAA) who received HDAA during BSR. Using age and %TBSA, the authors identified and matched 42 control patients (CTL) who did

Year in review 2008: Critical Care--trauma.

Eleven papers on trauma published in Critical Care during 2008 addressed traumatic brain injury (TBI), burns, diagnostic concerns and immunosuppression. In regard to TBI, preliminary results indicate the utility of either magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or ultrasound in measuring optic nerve sheath diameter to identify elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) as well as the potential benefit of thiopental for refractory ICP. Another investigation demonstrated that early extubation of TBI patients whose Glasgow Coma Scale score was 8 or less did not result in additional incidence of nosocomial pne

Final report of the safety assessment of methacrylic acid.

Methacrylic Acid is an organic acid used at concentrations between 50 and 88 percent to pretreat the nail and maximize the adhesion between the nail and artificial nail extender. Methacrylic Acid is readily absorbed through mucous membranes of the lungs, the gastrointestinal tract, and the skin; and is distributed to all major tissues. Oral LD50 values for rats ranged from 277 to 2260 mg/kg; acute toxicity symptoms included severe gastric irritation, gasping, labored respiration, prostration and hematuria. In a short-term inhalation study, rats exposed to Methacrylic Acid at 1300 ppm showed no

Case report of severe bronchial web-like stenoses after 'surviving the unsurvivable'.

BACKGROUND: There are few cases of multiple bronchial stenoses reported in the literature and none of the severity described here. The case is relevant due to its rareness, the pathophysiological insights derived, the successful interventional pulmonology strategies demonstrated, and as an example of a rare indication for high-risk lung transplantation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old man developed multiple recurrent bronchial web-like stenoses five weeks after an episode of severe tracheo-bronchitis presumed secondary to a chemical inhalation injury which initially caused complete bilateral

Airway response of asthmatic subjects to inhaled allergen after exposure to pollutants.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested that air pollutants resulting from vehicle exhaust emissions and burning of fossil fuels, either in combination or individually, may enhance the airway response of asthmatic subjects to inhaled allergen. It was hypothesised that the airway response to inhaled allergen after exposure to a combination of 400 ppb nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and 200 ppb sulphur dioxide (SO2) is increased 24-48 hours after exposure. METHODS: Thirteen mild atopic asthmatic volunteers were exposed for six hours to a single exposure of air and three exposures of the combination of

Cerebellar infarction following accidental inhalation of toluene-mixed paint.

We report a case of atypical cerebellar infarction following accidental inhalation of toluene mixed paint. An unconscious 57-year-old housewife with hypertension arrived at our emergency department by ambulance. She had been rescued from a basement (30 m3) 12 h after exposure to paint containing toluene (34%). On arrival, she was comatose (E1V1M1) with a mild fever (37.4 °C). Physical examination showed chemical burns on her buttocks and rales on the left lung. Initial arterial blood gas with 15 L/min of oxygen showed a pH of 7.142, PCO2 of 47.3 mmHg, and PaO2 of 204.7 mmHg. She received endot

Long-term tolerance of airway silicone stent in patients with post-tuberculosis tracheobronchial stenosis.

Surgery is a well-recognized modality of treatment for benign tracheobronchial stenosis. However, in some benign disease groups, such as tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, war gas exposure, and inhalation burns, multiplicity of involvement or long length of stenosed segment heightens surgical challenge. We investigated the outcomes and long-term tolerability of the Natural stent (N-stent) in such patients with post-tuberculosis tracheobronchial stenosis. A retrospective review was done for 17 patients who underwent silicone stenting (N-stent) for post-tuberculosis tracheobronchial stenosis during Janu

Six medical papyri describe the effects of Santorini's volcanic ash, and provide Egyptian parallels to the so-called biblical plagues.

Six medical papyri document how Santorini's volcanic ash from the Bronze Age biphasic eruption, otherwise attested by material retrieved at the bottom of lakes at the edge of the Nile Delta, severely affected the health of the inhabitants of Egypt as well as their society as a whole. Treatments for burns caused by particulate and dissolved acids are documented in the London Medical Papyrus as well as in the Ebers Papyrus, and are compatible with ash fallout and ash in rain, respectively. Furthermore, both instances of ash correlate to the first eight biblical plagues. Moreover, the latter text

New-Onset Convulsive Status Epilepticus Temporally Associated With Accidental Inhalation of Billygoat Weed (Ageratum conyzoides) Smoke: A Case Report.

Status epilepticus is most commonly associated with structural, metabolic, infectious, autoimmune, or toxic etiologies. Plant-related toxic exposures are uncommon causes of new-onset status epilepticus and remain poorly characterized. Ageratum conyzoides (billygoat weed) is an invasive plant widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions and is frequently used in traditional medicine. We report the case of a 76-year-old male with no prior history of epilepsy, cerebrovascular disease, dementia, head injury, alcohol use, or substance abuse who developed generalized convulsive status epil

Adipose-derived stem cells attenuate pulmonary microvascular hyperpermeability after smoke inhalation.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary edema is a hallmark of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Smoke inhalation causes ARDS, thus significantly increasing the mortality of burn patients. Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) exert potent anti-inflammatory properties. The goal of the present study was to test the safety and ecfficacy of ASCs, in a well-characterized clinically relevant ovine model of ARDS. METHODS: Female sheep were surgically prepared. ARDS was induced by cooled cotton smoke inhalation. Following injury, sheep were ventilated, resuscitated with lactated Ringer's solution, and cardiopul

Measuring surface temperature and grading pathological changes of airway tissue in a canine model of inhalational thermal injury.

BACKGROUND: Airway tissue shows unexpected invulnerability to heated air. The mechanisms of this phenomenon are open to debate. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to measure the surface temperatures at different locations of the airway, and to explore the relationship between the tissue's surface temperature and injury severity. METHOD: Twenty dogs were randomly divided into four groups, including three experimental groups (six dogs in each) to inhale heated air at 70-80 °C (group I), 150-160 °C (group II) and 310-320 °C (group III) and a control group (two dogs, only for histological observ

Temperature processing and distribution in larynx thermal inhalation injury with analogy to human airway cells: a mechanism of protection.

OBJECTIVE: Inhalation injuries, especially laryngeal injuries, threaten the lives of burn patients. Unlike studies on temperature distribution in the upper airway, studies on temperature development in different laryngeal layers, including the mucosa, lamina propria, cartilage, muscle, and subcutaneous layer, are lacking. METHOD: For the in-vivo study, 16 healthy adult male beagles were divided into four groups: control, low-, medium-, and high-heat groups, inhaling dry air at 26, 80, 160, and 320°C for 20 min, with temperature probes punctured through skin into layers as mentioned, and heat

Fire deaths in Cape Town, South Africa: A retrospective review of medico-legal and toxicological findings (2006 - 2018).

BACKGROUND: In South Africa, fire-related deaths are common, particularly within dense informal housing settlements. Published data on deaths from fire incidents in Cape Town is sparse. Additionally, little emphasis has been placed on the role of toxicological investigations in these deaths, despite the known risk of alcohol and drug impairment to burn injury. METHODS: A retrospective, descriptive analysis of post-mortem case reports from Salt River Mortuary was conducted to investigate all deaths in which fires were involved in the west metropole of Cape Town, between 2006 to 2018. Poisoning due to Abrus precatorius (jequirity bean).

Hydrogen peroxide is an oxidising agent that is used in a number of household products, including general-purpose disinfectants, chlorine-free bleaches, fabric stain removers, contact lens disinfectants and hair dyes, and it is a component of some tooth whitening products. In industry, the principal use of hydrogen peroxide is as a bleaching agent in the manufacture of paper and pulp. Hydrogen peroxide has been employed medicinally for wound irrigation and for the sterilisation of ophthalmic and endoscopic instruments. Hydrogen peroxide causes toxicity via three main mechanisms: corrosive dama
