PURPOSE: To assess prognostic factors in a large population of patients with metastatic nonseminomatous germ cell tumors (NSGCT) arising in gonadal or extragonadal sites.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data from 795 patients treated with chemotherapy between 1982 and 1986 in 13 centers were analyzed. Particular emphasis was placed on exact tumor measurements (eg, size of nodal masses, number of lung metastases), and the diagnostic pathology was also reviewed. Two cases of germ cell tumors (GCTs) of the basal ganglia are presented and 40 previously reported cases are reviewed. The incidence of GCTs of the basal ganglia and thalamus was estimated as less than 14% of all intracranial GCTs. All patients except for two (95%) were male, aged 7-19 years. Heterotaxy syndrome with polysplenia is an extremely rare congenital disorder caused by a disruption in the embryonic development that results in an abnormal arrangement of the abdominal and thoracic organs. We present the case of a 59-year-old female patient with invasive ductal carcinoma of the right breast (luminal A type) and CT findings of heterotaxy syndrome with polysplenia. The most remarkable anomalies identified were a left inferior vena cava draining into the hemiazygos vein, absent inferior vena cava at the thoracic level, and hepatic veins directly draining into the right atrium.

Germline mutations in the fumarate hydratase (FH) tumor suppressor gene predispose to leiomyomatosis, renal cysts, and renal cell cancer (HLRCC). HLRCC tumors overexpress HIF1alpha and hypoxia pathway genes. We conditionally inactivated mouse Fh1 in the kidney. The presence of Tissue Polypeptide Antigen (TPA) and Carcino-embryonic Antigen (CEA) in serial sections of 32 breast carcinomas and one case of neurofibrosarcoma was demonstrated by immunocytochemistry using the indirect peroxidase technique.
