Characterization of costal cartilage collagen in funnel chest.

Parallel measurements of pyridinoline content, the ratio of soluble:insoluble collagen, and the percentage of endogenous collagenolysis were made in samples of costal cartilage from forty-five children with funnel chest (FC) and from twenty-two control children. From an analysis of the influence of different factors, such as FC type (isolated or syndromic), a diagnosed syndrome, extent of FC depression (second or third), and age, two biochemical variants of FC-variants a and b, which were not related to the presence or absence of a known concurrent syndrome, were distinguished. These variants …

Cartilage hair hypoplasia in infancy: a misleading chondrodysplasia.

Among children with recessive metaphyseal dysplasia, cartilage hair hypoplasia, as described by McKusick is often recognized only during the 2nd year or later. The early radiological changes observed in six children with cartilage hair hypoplasia demonstrate the misleading aspect of this chondrodysplasia: micromelia, massive appearance of the long bones and round inferior femoral epiphyses, without distinct metaphyseal involvement. Early diagnosis permits the organisation of clinical, immunological and orthopaedic follow up and allows for correct genetic counselling.

[Indicators of articular cartilage degeneration in synovial fluid].

Detection of proteoglycans in biological fluids is a perspective method for the evaluation of the degree of catabolic processes in articular cartilage. The demand of accuracy and specificity of detection of substructures of the degradation products of the cartilaginous matrix, with the perspective of routine large scale examinations, restricts available possible methods practically only to the use of immunochemical methods. In the present investigation in the inhibitory ELISA test polyclonal antibodies with a double specificity in relation to basic structures of the cartilage--proteoglycans--w…

Staged, laminated, costal cartilage framework for ear reconstruction.

Two features of greatest importance in achieving a normal appearance in the reconstruction of an ear with microtia are that a conchal component with sufficient size, shape, and depth is present; and that auricular projection, sufficient in degree to show contours that appear normal from a posterior view, is present. The authors describe the construction of a staged, laminated framework that helps achieve these goals.

Subchondral bone drilling: a treatment for cartilage defects.

Clearly, no one surgical procedure is ideal for the treatment of degenerative joint disease. Many factors are involved in planning for the p … these generally are reserved for late stage arthroses. Subchondral drilling has been used to treat cartilage defects in conjunction with other procedures that address the etiology and symptomatology of the disease process. It has been shown that small drill holes may be effective in producing fibrocartilage to replace full- and partial-thickness cartilage …

Thyroid cartilage imaging with diagnostic ultrasound. Correlative studies.

In 1976, Noyek observed that the thyroid cartilage framework of the larynx could be imaged by diagnostic ultrasound; the image appeared uniquely independent of the presence or absence of calcification. It was suggested that ultrasound, with its simple, nonroentgenographic, noninvasive features, might permit screening detection of thyroid cartilage destruction. It might, therefore, give direction to better computed tomographic (CT) imaging, and, specifically, more effectively identify T4 laryngeal cancer. Since that time, with improving generations of ultrasound transducers, more than 130 clini…

Autogenous auricular cartilage grafting for lower eyelid retraction.

The authors discuss the surgical correction of lower eyelid retraction in dysthyroid, socket, and blepharoplasty patients. Sixty-three patients underwent a lateral canthal tightening combined with a vertical lengthening of the posterior lamella using autogenous posterior auricular cartilage. The average follow-up was for 2 years. We propose this combined procedure as the surgery of choice in the treatment of lower eyelid retraction seen in these three groups of patients.

Familial osteochondritis dissecans: a dysplasia of articular cartilage?

Two cases of osteochondritis dissecans in a boy and his mother are described. In the son only the knee and elbow joints and the epiphysis of the right second metacarpal were involved, whereas the mother showed early generalised degenerative joint disease associated with many large loose bodies in one knee. The authors speculate that familial osteochondritis dissecans is a dysplasia of articular cartilage caused by abnormal chondrocyte metabolism.

Craniofacial and dental characteristics of cartilage-hair hypoplasia.

The cranio-facial and dental features were studied by means of roentgencephalometry and anthropometry in 24 patients with cartilage-hair-hypoplasia. Data pertaining to the cranial base were considered indicative of subnormal growth in some of the cranial synchondroses. The width of the neurocranium was slightly below the values of the controls, whereas neurocranial length and circumference appeared unaffected. Facial height was larger than in the controls and facial index values were high. The chin was receding, but the other values of facial depth were relatively large. No abnormalities were …

Protocol for Cryopreservation of Particulated Articular Cartilage by Vitrification.

Transplantation of particulated articular cartilage (AC) is an established surgical procedure that produces promising clinical results while potentially preventing joint deterioration into osteoarthritis. This chapter documents a patented vitrification protocol that is able to cold preserve particulated AC tissue, thereby maintaining cell viability and matrix integrity. Mathematical modeling was used to develop this two-step, dual-temperature, multi-cryoprotectant loading protocol. The cryoprotectant loading consists of exposing the particulated AC to two sequential cryoprotectant cocktails at…

The Role of Plastin in Bone, Cartilage, and Related Diseases.

The plastin family (PLS1, PLS2, PLS3) comprises highly conserved actin-binding proteins (ABPs) that regulate cytoskeletal dynamics by cross-linking actin microfilaments and play key roles in bone and cartilage development, homeostasis, and disease. PLS1 primarily stabilizes tight actin bundles in epithelial brush-border microvilli and has also been reported to support osteoblast differentiation via regulating intracellular Ca2+ homeostasis. In bone, PLS3 mutations lead to X-linked osteoporosis through mechanisms involving the inhibition of the WNT pathway, activation of TH17 cell differentiati…

Key insights and implications of cartilage degradation in osteoarthritis.

Progressive degradation of articular cartilage is characteristic of osteoarthritis (OA), but OA is more than a wear-and-tear disease of the cartilage. It is a complex, multifactorial disease affecting all joint tissues, amplified by local and systemic inflammation. Chondrocytes play a crucial role in cartilage homeostasis and various molecular pathways that leading to their catabolic state have been identified. Cartilage degradation fragments and direct exposure of chondrocytes to extracellular matrix molecules provide feedback loops that further stimulate the catabolic profile. Synovial infla…

[Advances in mechanisms of Meckel's cartilage development and degeneration].

Meckel's cartilage (MC) was first delineated in 1820 by the German anatomist Johann Friedrich Meckel the Younger through his examination of human embryos. During early development, MC functions as a supportive structure for the mandible and serves as a template for the subsequent formation of the jaw bones. Ultimately, MC transforms into either skeletal tissue, ligaments, or completely resorbs, integrating with the continuously developing osseous structures. This review elucidates the influence of MC development and degeneration on mandibular morphogenesis, delineating cellular processes and k…

Element accumulation in the tracheal and bronchial cartilages of monkeys.

Compositional changes in the tracheal and bronchial cartilages can affect respiratory ventilation and lung function. We aimed to elucidate element accumulation in the tracheal and bronchial cartilages of monkeys and divided it into four sites: the tracheal, tracheal bifurcation, left bronchial, and right bronchial cartilages. The elemental content was analyzed using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. The average calcium content was two to three times higher in the tracheal cartilage than in the other three cartilages. The trends of phosphorus and zinc were similar to thos…
