Structural Neuroimaging and Neuropsychologic Signatures in Children With Vertically Acquired HIV.

BACKGROUND: Children with vertically acquired HIV exhibit persistent cognitive impairments, yet the corresponding neuroimaging signature of vertical infection remains unclear. METHODS: Fifty healthy control children and 51 vertically infected children were included in the study. The HIV-infected group consisted of survivors who had not received antiretroviral therapy at birth. The HIV-infected group averaged 11.4 (2.5) years of age, with a median CD4 count of 683 cells/mm(3). Most (71%) of the HIV-infected children were on antiretroviral therapy for a median of 34 months (range: 33-42) with H

Cortical and subcortical 5-HT2A receptor binding in neuroleptic-naive first-episode schizophrenic patients.

The serotonin 5-HT(2A) receptor is suspected to be involved in a number of psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia. In particular, at … eceptor distribution between patients and controls. An increase in 5-HT(2A) receptor binding in the caudate nucleus was detected in the group of schizophrenic patients (0.7+/-0.1) when compared to the healthy controls (0.5+/-0.3) (p=0.02). Our results confirm other in vivo findings of no difference in cortical 5-HT(2A) receptor binding between first-episode antip …

Distribution of six transplasma membrane NADH-dehydrogenases in rat brain tissue.

Transplasma membrane redox plays a significant role in cellular activation and growth. Six isoenzymes could be prepared from purified rat brain synaptic plasma membrane. Polyclonal antibodies have been prepared against six transplasma membrane oxydoreductases (PMO-I to PMO-VI) and the tissue distribution of the various iso-enzymes have been investigated in adult rat brains by means of immunohistochemistry. PMO-I is densely observed in layers I, IV and V of the parietal cortex, in CA1 of the hippocampus (except for the molecular layer), in the caudate putamen, in the dorsal, granular and ventra

The emerging role of the cerebellum in neurodegeneration linked to cognitive impairment.

The cerebellum has been largely overlooked in Alzheimer's disease, despite increasing evidence implicating its cognitive capacities and functional networks, which interacts with cerebral cortex to subserve cognition. A study by Lin et al. has indicated that the cerebellum is part of the integrated network in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), a prodromal state of Alzheimer's disease. The aMCI patients exhibited weaker cerebello-parietal functional connectivity but stronger cerebellar coupling with precuneus cortex, posterior cingulate gyrus, and caudate nucleus. These alterations in ce…

Motor Phenomena Associated With Leucine-Rich Glioma-Inactivated (LGI1) Emi-Encephalitis.

LGI1 encephalitis is a rare immune-mediated brain disorder. Its typical features include faciobrachial dystonic seizures (FBDS), startle reactions, chorea, myoclonus, atypical parkinsonism, cogni-tive impairment, and personality changes. We report the case of a 57-year-old woman presenting with distinct patterns of involuntary movements, including faciobrachial dystonic spasms, dyskinetic movements, and chorea. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and tests on blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) demonstrated encephalitis involving the right temporal lobe and caudate nucleus and associated with LGI…

Akinetic mutism and gait disturbance in a patient with delayed post-hypoxic leukoencephalopathy.

We report on a patient with delayed post-hypoxic leukoencephalopathy (DPHL) who showed akinetic mutism and gait disturbance, neural injuries that were demonstrated on diffusion tensor tractography (DTT). A patient was exposed to carbon monoxide (CO) and rapidly recovered; however, two weeks after onset, he began to show cognitive impairment and gait disturbance. At six weeks after CO exposure, he showed akinetic mutism and gait inability. DTT at 6-weeks post-exposure showed discontinuations in neural connectivities of the caudate nucleus to the medial prefrontal and orbitofrontal cortex in bot…

Genomic analysis of intracranial and subcortical brain volumes yields polygenic scores accounting for variation across ancestries.

Subcortical brain structures are involved in developmental, psychiatric and neurological disorders. Here we performed genome-wide association studies meta-analyses of intracranial and nine subcortical brain volumes (brainstem, caudate nucleus, putamen, hippocampus, globus pallidus, thalamus, nucleus accumbens, amygdala and the ventral diencephalon) in 74,898 participants of European ancestry. We identified 254 independent loci associated with these brain volumes, explaining up to 35% of phenotypic variance. We observed gene expression in specific neural cell types across differentiation time p…

Dopamine release within forebrain sites perfused with tetrahydroisoquinolines or tryptoline in the rat.

The localized effect of amine-aldehyde condensation products on the endogenous release of dopamine (DA) was examined in dopaminergic-rich areas of the brain. In the unanesthetized rat, dopaminergic stores were labeled by 14C-dopamine (1.0 microCi) microinjected in a volume of 1.0 microliters into the caudate nucleus, tuberculum olfactorium, nucleus accumbens or other contiguous sites within the ventral forebrain. Subsequently, each labeled site was locally perfused with an artificial CSF, by means of push-pull cannulae, at a rate of 25.0 microliters per min. Two tetrahydroisoquinolines, tetrah…
