Virtual reality technologies are in wide use in sport psychology. An advantage of this kind of technology is the possibility to assess sportspeople's readiness to perform complex movements. This study is aimed at developing a method for the evaluation of vestibular function disturbances in young skaters. Such disturbances may occur while skaters are performing rotation movements. To achieve this goal, we induced a vection illusion, accompanied by virtual environment rotation in a CAVE virtual reality system. Vestibular disturbances were tested for two groups-professional skaters and people who

Epidermoid cysts are rare lesions accounting for 1% of intracranial tumors with approximately 50% located within the cerebello-pontine angle (CPA). Resection is complicated by their close anatomical relation to critical neurovascular structures and their tendency to be densely adherent making complete removal a significant neurosurgical challenge. We present a 35-year-old woman with left sided tongue numbness and lower lip paresthesias with a CPA epidermoid. An endoscopic assisted retrosigmoid approach was utilized for resection. A 30-degree endoscope was used to assist in removal of unseen tu

Although many approaches to the anterior clivus and parasellar region have been described, safe access to this area remains difficult. The authors describe the use of the midface degloving approach as a route for resection of intracranial lesions of the anterior skull base. Six cases are presented: two sellar meningiomas, a trigeminal neuroma, a pituitary adenoma, fibrous dysplasia and fibrosis of the trigeminal nerve within Meckel's cave. The midface degloving approach has allowed excellent exposure, avoids any visible scarring and obviates the need for craniotomy. The approach is a useful ad

A review of 4756 deaths investigated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in 1984-6 found 233 deaths from asphyxiation and poisoning, excluding asphyxiations from trench cave-ins. The highest rates were in the oil and gas industry and in utilities. Toxic gases were the largest group (65) followed by simple asphyxiants (48), mechanical causes (42), and solvents (35). Deaths from solvents were significantly more likely in young workers. Nine deaths were caused by improper air supply to respirators and five by recreational inhalation of gas or vapours. Of the 146 deaths in

We describe a case of Sjögren's syndrome-associated trigeminal neuropathy with mandibular nerve enhancement at the foramen ovale and Gasserian ganglion (Meckel's cave) in a patient with a prior history of breast cancer. We also explore the differential diagnosis of trigeminal neuropathy associated with mandibular nerve involvement at the foramen ovale and exclude other diseases such as Sjögren's syndrome or perineurial invasion as a result of various carcinomas. We emphasize the importance of an investigative triad of searching for a local head-and-neck malignancy that may metastasize by perin

Anomalies of the appendix are uncommon and are usually discovered incidentally during surgery for appendicitis. We present a rare case of appendiceal duplication, which can have serious consequences if overlooked during an operation. Following an initial admission for right iliac fossa pain which led to an uneventful laparoscopic appendicectomy, a 36 year old male was readmitted for increasing abdominal pain and distension. Subsequent surgical exploration revealed a second appendix, which was retrocaecal and gangrenous. Careful inspection of the caecal pole should always be performed during su

BACKGROUND: Vestibular schwannoma (acoustic neuroma) most commonly presents with ipsilateral disturbances of acoustic, vestibular, trigeminal and facial nerves. Presentation of vestibular schwannoma with contralateral facial pain is quite uncommon.
CASE PRESENTATION: Among 156 cases of operated vestibular schwannoma, we found one case with unusual presentation of contralateral hemifacial pain.
CONCLUSION: The presentation of contralateral facial pain in the vestibular schwannoma is rare. It seems that displacement and distortion of the brainstem and compression of the contralateral trigemina

The main deep-seated fungal diseases and their encountered pathology in New Caledonia and other islands of the South Pacific are reviewed (1970-96). Cryptococcosis is encountered in all islands of the South Pacific, Australia and Papua New Guinea, with a predominance of variety gattii, which is associated with some species of Eucalyptus. Histoplasmosis is not uncommon, and there was an epidemic in New Caledonia in 1994 among people who had visited a bat-inhabited cave. Mycetomas, in particular presenting as pale granules in tissues, are encountered in New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea,

It is difficult to deal with interventional management of partial stenosis or occlusion type of Budd-chiari syndrome and manage the hepatic veins associated with inferior vena cave occlusion. Puncture, PTA and vascular stent plant were used to treat 12 patients with partial stenosis or occlusion of Budd-chiari syndrome. The procedures were successful. Either the symptoms or signs disappeared or relieved after operation. No severe side effects occurred. Follow-up for 1.5 through 26 months (average 8.5 months) revealed that the early or middle results were gratifying. There may be danger during

Carlsbad Caverns National Park in southeastern New Mexico is adjacent to the Permian Basin, one of the most productive oil and gas regions in the country. The 2019 Carlsbad Caverns Air Quality Study (CarCavAQS) was designed to examine the influence of regional sources, including urban emissions, oil and gas development, wildfires, and soil dust on air quality in the park. Field measurements of aerosols, trace gases, and deposition were conducted from 25 July through 5 September 2019. Here, we focus on observations of fine particles and key trace gas precursors to understand the important contr

Marburg virus (MARV) causes sporadic outbreaks of severe Marburg virus disease (MVD). Most MVD outbreaks originated in East Africa and field studies in East Africa, South Africa, Zambia, and Gabon identified the Egyptian rousette bat (ERB; Rousettus aegyptiacus) as a natural reservoir. However, the largest recorded MVD outbreak with the highest case-fatality ratio happened in 2005 in Angola, where direct spillover from bats was not shown. Here, collaborative studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Njala University, University of California, Davis USAID-PREDICT, and the Univ

A novel strain of methanogenic archaea, designated MC-20(T), was isolated from the anoxic sediment of a subsurface lake in Movile Cave, Mangalia, Romania. Cells were non-motile, Gram-stain-negative rods 3.5-4.0 µm in length and 0.6-0.7 µm in width, and occurred either singly or in short chains. Strain MC-20(T) was able to utilize H2/CO2, formate, 2-propanol and 2-butanol as substrate, but not acetate, methanol, ethanol, dimethyl sulfide, monomethylamine, dimethylamine or trimethylamine. Neither trypticase peptone nor yeast extract was required for growth. The major membrane lipids of strain MC

Surgery for petroclival meningioma is challenging because cranial nerve preservation during tumor removal can be very complex. For small- to medium-sized tumors, the anatomical relationship between tumor and neurovascular structures can be assessed before surgery. However, in large tumors, cranial nerves usually cannot be seen in preoperative images. The authors present a case of a 65-year-old woman who presented with gait disturbance and hearing loss and was diagnosed with huge retroclival meningioma involving the cavernous sinus, Meckel's cave, and internal acoustic meatus. In this video, th

We discuss a case of lower lip carcinoma which presented with atypical symptoms; facial paralysis, conductive type hearing loss, and ophthalmoplegia. Due to an earlier resection, no mass was evident on the primary examination. Diagnostic imaging revealed a mass originating from the lower lip, the perineural spread of the tumor along the left inferior alveolar nerve to the left infratemporal fossa and the left foramen ovale. Through a retrograde course from the foramen ovale, the tumor extended the ipsilateral cavernous sinus, Meckel's cave, and cisternal portion of the CN V. This atypical spre

Binocular diplopia and right hemifacial numbness developed in a 52-year-old woman after resection of a right temporal lobe glioblastoma. Based on the Parks-Bielschowsky 3-step test, she was diagnosed with a right cranial nerve (CN) IV palsy in addition to right CN V dysfunction. Iatrogenic diplopia may result from temporal lobe surgery due to the intimate relationship of CN IV and CN III to the mesial temporal lobe. In addition, injury to CN V within Meckel cave is believed to be the cause of facial numbness in some patients after temporal lobe surgery. The anatomy of the intracranial portion

An adult autopsy case of the persistent primitive trigeminal artery (PTA) is reported. At the origin of the PTA in the cavernous portion of the internal carotid artery, the PTA branched into the meningohypophyseal trunk and the artery of the inferior cavernous sinus. This might indicate that these arteries were formed at the same embryonic stage. At the cisternal portion of the PTA in the posterior fossa, it also branched into the trigeminal nerve root and pons on the way to the basilar artery. The PTA might have functions for the normal structures even in the case of adults. The PTA passed th

The 46-year-old woman was admitted with an acute inflammatory swelling of the left forearm. During the previous six months the patient had suffered from recurrent thromboses of the superficial veins associated with generalized physical weakness. The gynaecological history was remarkable for hypermenorrhea and metrorrhagia. On examination, the signs of an acute thrombophlebitis with concomitant lymphangitis were observed. In the lower right abdomen there was a palpable tumor. Laboratory findings showed a mild anemia and indices of inflammation. Subsequent procedures (abdominal sonography, gynae

Håkanson's treatment of trigeminal neuralgia by injecting 0.2 to 0.4 ml of glycerol into the cerebrospinal fluid in Meckel's cave was carried out in 27 patients with trigeminal neuralgia, 3 with atypical facial neuralgia, and 1 with post-traumatic facial neuralgia. Minor modifications of his technique are described based on our finding of a greater pain and sensory loss upon injection than he noted. We present evidence that glycerol is more toxic than its cryoprotectant effect would intimate and that it selectively eliminates those components of the compound action potential in the trigeminal

Chelicerae, the mouthparts of chelicerates, are essential for food processing. Particularly within harvestmen (Opiliones), some species have greatly elongated their tripartite chelicerae and utilize them for mating behavior, defense, and primarily for predation. We investigated two European species, Ischyropsalis muellneri and Ischyropsalis hellwigii, which occupy different niches (caves, forests), exhibit different feeding ecologies (opportunist, specialist), and first and foremost possess different chelicerae morphologies (long and thin, short and robust). We scanned the specimens using stat…

Egyptian rousette bats (ERBs) are implicated as reservoir hosts for Marburg virus (MARV), but natural mechanisms involved in maintenance of MARV in ERB populations remain undefined. A number of hematophagous ectoparasites, including fleas, parasitize bats. Subcutaneous (SC) inoculation of ERBs with MARV consistently results in viremia, suggesting that infectious MARV could be ingested by blood-sucking ectoparasites during feeding. In our study, MARV RNA was detected in fleas that took a blood meal during feeding on viremic bats on days 3, 7, and 11 after SC inoculation. Virus concentration in
