BACKGROUND: Obtaining successful arthrodesis at the craniocervical junction and atlantoaxial joint can be more challenging than in other segments of the cervical spine. This challenge stems from the relatively hypermobile joints between the occipital condyles, the motion that occurs at C1 and C2, as well as the paucity of dorsal bony surfaces for posterior arthrodesis. BACKGROUND: Rib-based and spine-based systems are commonly used distraction-based growth friendly treatments for early-onset scoliosis (EOS). Our primary purpose was to determine the risk of developing postoperative proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) during distraction-based growth friendly surgery.
METHODS: A multicenter, retrospective, radiographic comparison was performed for a group of 40 children with EOS who were treated with posterior distraction-based implants. PJK was defined as proximal junction sagittal angle (PJA)≥10 degrees and PJA at least 10 degrees greater than preoperative.

OBJECTIVE: Thoracic outlet syndrome is a condition caused by compression of the subclavian artery, subclavian vein and/or the brachial plexus. Scalene muscle section and first rib removal is the most effective treatment. The objective of this article is to demonstrate first rib resection using videothoracoscopy.
TECHNIQUE: We describe first rib removal by videothoracoscopy using three 12 mm entrance ports (although one is widened to 3 cm to introduce periosteotomy cutters and rib shears). We have performed this operation on three cases of thoracic outlet syndrome with very good results.

STUDY DESIGN: A study on a pair of male sibs to reach for the etiological understanding of unusual skull base/spine maldevelopment.
OBJECTIVE: Previously, radiographs alone were used to formulate this diagnosis. Here, three-dimensional computed tomography (3D CT) studies further clarified the typical diagnostic findings associated with spondylocostal dysostosis (SCD). Interestingly, patients with SCD are at increased risk for diffuse skull base/cervical fusion syndromes and can result in severe neurologic deficits associated with any degree of trauma.

A total of 136 patients with a compression syndrome of the upper limb were examined systematically by selective dynamic angiography as developed by the Hôtel-Dieu Hospital in Montreal.
