A 12-year-old female was treated surgically for an aneurysmal bone cyst of the cervical spine involving the C2 and C3 vertebrae. The patient underwent surgery twice and further surgery was assessed as unfeasible. Treatment by intraosseous injection of doxycycline was uncomplicated and has resulted in resolution of the multifocal recurrent disease.

Evaluation of facial asymmetries requires a complete and systematic approach. This clinical examination is supplemented with radiographic studies including panoramic and cephalometric views. For complex cases CT scans are useful. Evaluation of the shape of the cervical vertebrae seen on lateral cephalometric radiographs can be used to predict potential growth in children.

Degenerative cervical spondylolisthesis (DCS) is a cervical deformity arising from regressive changes where trapezoidal deformity characterized by hypertrophic osteophytes of spinal elements is often observed. There is a paucity of literature about the spinal contour of DCS and trapezoidal vertebrae. We conducted this research to clarify the relationship between spinal sagittal alignment and trapezoidal deformity in DCS. Total seventy-nine patients with cervical spondylosis were enrolled. Twenty-four patients who exhibited cervical spondylolisthesis were classified into DCS group. Other patien

Inhalation of foreign bodies, a common occurrence in children, can be life-threatening. Different types of foreign bodies can be found, but laryngeal localization is rare. We here report the case of an 8-month-old male infant who presented with respiratory distress, dysphonia, and stridor. On admission, the child exhibited severe laryngeal dyspnea. Cervical CT scan revealed a radiopaque foreign body in the larynx. Endoscopic extraction revealed an impacted fish vertebra in the subglottis. Foreign bodies located in the laryngeal area of the lower airways are rare, and the discovery of a fish ve

BACKGROUND: Intermediate vertebral collapse is a newly discovered complication of consecutive two-level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). There have been no analytical studies related to the effects of endplate defects on the biomechanics of the intermediate vertebral bone after ACDF. This study aimed to compare the effects of endplate defects on the intermediate vertebral bone biomechanics in the zero-profile (ZP) and cage-and-plate (CP) methods of consecutive 2-level ACDF and to determine whether collapse of the intermediate vertebra is more likely to occur using ZP.
METHODS:

A 16-year-old man was hospitalised with a painful space-occupying lesion in his posterior neck involving muscles, soft tissues, C1 cervical vertebra and vital cervical blood vessels. The true-cut biopsy showed inflammatory tissue. The microbiological analysis, which combined classical bacteriological and molecular methods, yielded at least four different anaerobic species. The patient was treated successfully with a prolonged course of ceftriaxone and metronidazole.

The integrity of the high cervical spine, the transition zone from the brainstem to the spinal cord, is crucial for survival and daily life. The region protects the enclosed neurovascular structure and allows a substantial portion of the head motion. Injuries of the high cervical spine are frequent, and the fractures of the C2 vertebra account for approximately 17-25% of acute cervical fractures. We review the two major types of C2 vertebral fractures, odontoid fracture and Hangman's fracture. For both types of fractures, favorable outcomes could be obtained if the delicately selected conserva

PURPOSE: To report the prevalence and relationship of developmental cervical and lumbar spinal stenosi … was conducted. We measured the anteroposterior (AP) and transverse diameter of the fourth to sixth cervical vertebrae (C4-C6) and third to fifth lumbar vertebrae (L3-L5). Stenosis of the cervical spine and lumbar spine was defined as an AP diameter of <12 mm and <13 mm, respectively. We also measured the skull circumference, the AP and transverse diameters of the f …

Twelve patients treated with cervical traction for complaints of cervical radicular pain subsequently developed lumbar radicular discomfort. Intermittent cervical traction therapy had been initiated at 15 pounds and increased to 30 pounds. Lumbar spine roentgenographs in four patients demonstrated a transitional lumbar vertebrae and ten patients had evidence of spinal osteoarthritis with associated degenerative changes. Abnormal electroneuromyographs were found in four patients. In two additional patients with normal electromyographs, the spinal evoked potentials were asymmetrically slowed sug

Megaraptora constitute a distinctive clade of Cretaceous theropods that evolved long and powerful arms, long and unsculptured skull and, particularly, highly pneumatized and slender skeletons in comparison to their relatives (e.g., tyrannosaurs). Furthermore, younger and late branching megaraptorans become progressively bigger and more pneumatic, which has been related with the extinction of carcharodontosaurids in the Cenomanian-Turonian limit and the niche shifting of megaraptorans as top predators of their ecosystems. Notwithstanding, the progressive increment of the pneumaticity and body m

OBJECTIVE: This study assesses the value of quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI) in evaluating clival invasion (CI) and monitoring … nse (CR) and non-CR groups based on nasopharyngeal soft tissue tumor regression per RECIST 1.1. The cervical vertebrae served as self-controls.
RESULTS: At baseline, T1, T2, and T2* mapping values were significantly higher in clival invasion than in normal cervical vertebrae (p < 0.001). During treatment, the CR group (87.3%) exhibited marked decreases in T1 values …

OBJECTIVES: To identify the variation of C2 vertebral artery groove (VAG) based on the thin-slice computed tomography (CT) scan and choose an individual screw placement method to decrease risk of malposition.
BACKGROUND: C2 pedicle screws can be successful anchors for a variety of cervical disorders. However, variations of VAG may cause malposition and breach when C2 transpedicle screw was inserted. Recognizing the variations of vertebrae artery groove (VAG) in C2 and choosing an individual screw placement method (transpedicle or translaminar) may be

BACKGROUND: Grisel syndrome describes an infectious soft tissue process that destabilizes the cervical bony elements and ligamentous complexes. This nontraumatic atlantoaxial rotary subluxation occurs in children primarily. This case illustrates a rare case presentation of an adult with Grisel syndrome: infectious destruction of the right atlantoaxial facet joint caused the occiput-C1 vertebra (head) to rotate rightward with lateral horizontal displacement off the C2 vertebra.
OBSERVATIONS: Because the infection destroyed the C1 bony arch and atlantoaxial facet joints with epidural extension,

BACKGROUND: Congenital spondylolytic spondylolisthesis of C2 vertebra resulting from deficient posterior element of the axis is rarely described in the literature.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe a unique case of agenesis of posterior elements of C2 with craniovertebral junction anomalies consisting of osseous, vascular, and soft tissue anomalies. A 26-year-old man presented with symptoms of upper cervical myelopathy of 12 months' duration. A computed tomography scan of the cervical spine including the craniovertebral junction revealed spondylolisthesis of C2 over C3, atlantoaxial dislocation,

Neutrophil alkaline phosphatase score was normal. Serum vitamin B12 and plasma platelet-derived growth factor level were elevated. Skeletal X-ray revealed multiple punched-out lesions at the 8th thoracic vertebra, and 6t
