One hundred and thirty-six patients with biopsy-proven carcinoma of cervix were treated with external beam irradiation to the whole pelvis (46 Gy in 23 fractions) and three weekly applications of high-dose-rate (HDR) intracavitary brachytherapy of 7 or 8 Gy per fraction to point A (2 cm above and 2 cm lateral to the cervical os). During the last decade, the organization of brachytherapy in France moved to 62 units in 173 radiotherapy centres in 2009. More than 7500 patients were treated in 2009, quite exclusively with curative intent, for 80% in public or associated hospitals. The techniques improved to high tech 3D dosimetry and optimization of the dose distribution. Brachytherapy, despite representing only 5% of the treatments by irradiation, is a reference treatment for several tumors.

K+ and Cl- channels are involved in regulating the proliferation of a number of cell types. Two main hypotheses have been proposed to explain the mechanism by which these channels influence cell proliferation: regulation of membrane potential and regulation of cell volume. Effects of low doses of protracted gamma irradiation on pre- and neonatally exposed ovaries in CBA mice have been compared with those previously obtained by 90Sr contamination of the dam.
