Ilex paraguariensis, white mulberry and chromium picolinate in patients with pre-diabetes.

AIM: to evaluate if a nutraceutical compound containing Ilex paraguariensis, White Mulberry and Chromium Picolinate can ameliorate glycemic status in patients with pre-diabetes. METHODS: we enrolled patients with IFG or IGT, not taking other hypoglycemic compounds. Patients were randomized to take placebo or the nutraceutical compound for 3 months, in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design. Both treatments were self-administered once a day, 1 tablet during the breakfast. RESULTS: a reduction of FPG was observed with the nutraceutical combination (-7.8%). Furthermore, there was…

Exposure to Welding Fumes, Hexavalent Chromium, or Nickel and Risk of Lung Cancer.

To investigate the risk of lung cancer after exposure to welding fumes, hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), and nickel, we analyzed 3,418 lung cancer cases and 3,488 controls among men from 2 German case-control studies (1988-1996). We developed a welding-process exposure matrix from measurements of these agents, and this was linked with welding histories from a job-specific questionnaire to calculate cumulative exposure variables. Logistic regression models were fitted to estimate odds ratios with confidence intervals conditional on study, and they adjusted for age, smoking, and working in other at…

Chromium-Salen Catalyzed Cross-Coupling of Phenols: Mechanism and Origin of the Selectivity.

A highly chemoselective phenol cross-coupling reaction catalyzed by a Cr-salen catalyst was developed. Kinetic studies showed that the oxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(V) is the rate-determining step of the reaction. In addition, experimental stoichiometric analysis showed that a high valent Cr(V) species is the active catalyst for this process. The selectivity of the reaction was found to be determined by the cross-coupling carbon-carbon bond forming reaction, rather than any precoordination species. It appears that the lowest energy cross-coupling pathway requires a lesser degree of electronic reo

Adsorption and desorption of chromium with humic acid coated iron oxide nanoparticles.

Presence of carcinogenic chromium, i.e., Cr(VI), in different industrial effluents necessitates design and development of effective abatement technologies. Nanosorbent consisting of iron oxide nanoparticles functionalized with soil-derived humic acid was employed for removal of Cr(VI). The point of zero charge for both humic acid and nanoparticles as estimated from pH shift experiments was between pH 8 and 9. Adsorption isotherm from batch experiments at neutral pH followed Langmuir model with projected maximum adsorption capacities for humic acid coated nanoparticles (24.13 mg/g) much higher …

Chromium chains as polydentate fluoride ligands for actinides and group IV metals.

The reactions of {Cr6} horseshoe chains {[nPr2NH2]3[Cr6F11(O2CtBu)10]}2, 1 and precursors of actinides and group IV metals led to a series of ring complexes [nPr2NH2][Cr7TiF6O2(O2CtBu)16], 2, [nPr2NH2][Cr6Ti2F5O3(O2CtBu)16], 3, [Cr6ThF7(O2CtBu)15 (Me2SO)], 4, [(nPr2NH2)2(Cr6Th2F12(O2CtBu)16)], 5 and [nPr2NH2][Cr6U2O2F8(O2CtBu)16(Me2SO)], 6. X-ray structure studies indicate that the {Cr6} chains maintain their structures in these complexes, acting as polydentate fluoride ligands. Their static magnetic properties were measured and fitted by isotropic exchange Hamiltonian. In accordance with 1, t

Removal of elevated level of chromium in groundwater by the fabricated PANI/Fe3O4 nanocomposites.

In this work, we report the reduction of chromium concentration in the polluted groundwater samples from Madurai Kamaraj University area, India, where the dissolved salts in groundwater are reported as serious health hazards for its inhabitants. The water samples have intolerable amounts of total dissolved solids (TDS) and chromium is a prominent pollutant among them. Chromium reduction was achieved by treating the polluted groundwater with PANI/Fe3O4 nanocomposites synthesized by in situ polymerization method. Further experimentation showed that the nanocomposites exhibit better chromium remo…

Differential physiological responses of two Salvinia species to hexavalent chromium at a glance.

In plants of Salvinia rotundifolia and Salvinia minima the effect of two Cr(VI) concentrations (5 and 20mgL(-1)) applied for 7days was assessed by measuring changes in biomass, photosynthetic pigments, Cr accumulation, malondialdehyde (MDA), membrane stability index (MSI), thiols (TT, NPT and PBT), and phenolics (SP and IP). Biomass in S. minima was decreased at highest Cr(VI) concentration, but there were no changes in S. rotundifolia. Metal accumulation was different in both species. S. minima accumulates more metal in fronds, but S. rotundifolia accumulates more metal in lacinias. Results a

Influence of pH on hexavalent chromium reduction by Fe(II) and sulfide compounds.

Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of pH on Cr(VI) reduction with Fe(II), sulfide and mixtures of Fe(II) and sulfide at pH 3.0-12.0. The results showed that Fe(II) could reduce Cr(VI) with a high removal of nearly 100% in the pH range of 3.0-9.0, while the reduction of Cr(VI) decreased to approximately 60% considering the oxygenation of Fe(II) at pH 12.0. The reaction between Cr(VI) and sulfide, however, was largely pH dependent. H2S was the main sulfide species with the Cr(VI) removal of ∼80% at pH < 7.0, while sulfide mainly existed in the forms as HS(-) or S(2-) a

Direct synthesis of chromium perovskite oxyhydride with a high magnetic-transition temperature.

We report a novel oxyhydride SrCrO2H directly synthesized by a high-pressure high-temperature method. Powder neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction revealed that this compound adopts the ideal cubic perovskite structure (Pm3̄m) with O(2-)/H(-) disorder. Surprisingly, despite the non-bonding nature between Cr 3d t(2g) orbitals and the H 1s orbital, it exhibits G-type spin ordering at T(N)≈380 K, which is higher than that of RCrO3 (R=rare earth) and any chromium oxides. The enhanced T(N) in SrCrO2H with four Cr-O-Cr bonds in comparison with RCr(3+)O3 with six Cr-O-Cr bonds is reasonably expla…

Removal of hexavalent chromium by using red mud activated with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide.

The removal of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] from aqueous solution by using red mud activated with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was studied. The optimum operation parameters, such as CTAB concentration, pH values, contact time, and initial Cr(VI) concentration, were investigated. The best concentration of CTAB for modifying red mud was found to be 0.50% (mCTAB/VHCl,0.6 mol/L). The lower pH (<2) was found to be much more favourable for the removal of Cr(VI). Red mud activated with CTAB can greatly improve the removal ratio of Cr(VI) as high as four times than that of original red mud. A…

The use of chromium(III) to supercharge peptides by protonation at low basicity sites.

The addition of chromium(III) nitrate to solutions of peptides with seven or more residues greatly increases the formation of doubly protonated peptides, [M + 2H](2+), by electrospray ionization. The test compound heptaalanine has only one highly basic site (the N-terminal amino group) and undergoes almost exclusive single protonation using standard solvents. When Cr(III) is added to the solution, abundant [M + 2H](2+) forms, which involves protonation of the peptide backbone or the C-terminus. Salts of Al(III), Mn(II), Fe(III), Fe(II), Cu(II), Zn (II), Rh(III), La(III), Ce(IV), and Eu(III) we…

Proteomics reveals plasma profiles for monitoring the toxicity caused by chromium compounds.

BACKGROUND: Today, various heavy metals are widespread in the ecosystem and have become important environmental contaminants. Exposure to these hazardous metals such as chromium usually results in cytotoxicity and large-scale protein changes which reflect pathologic states. METHODS: We used a comprehensive proteomic tool to survey changes in plasma proteins elicited by two chromium species (Cr(6+) and Cr(3+)). RT-PCR was applied to evaluate levels of cytokines associated with adverse responses. Lectin blotting was used to investigate the contents of fucosylated proteins. RESULTS: Protein pro…

Exposure of soil microbial communities to chromium and arsenic alters their diversity and structure.

Extensive use of chromium (Cr) and arsenic (As) based preservatives from the leather tanning industry in Pakistan has had a deleterious effect on the soils surrounding production facilities. Bacteria have been shown to be an active component in the geochemical cycling of both Cr and As, but it is unknown how these compounds affect microbial community composition or the prevalence and form of metal resistance. Therefore, we sought to understand the effects that long-term exposure to As and Cr had on the diversity and structure of soil microbial communities. Soils from three spatially isolated t…

Chromium induced stress conditions in heterotrophic and auxotrophic strains of Euglena gracilis.

Oxidative stress parameter and antioxidant defense compound as well as enzyme activity were studied in relation to different Cr(VI) concentrations (0, 10, 20, 40 μM) in two strains of Euglena gracilis, one isolated from a polluted river (MAT) and the other acquired from a culture collection (UTEX). Chromium toxicity was measured in the auxotrophic and obligated heterotrophic variants of the two strains. Chromium uptake was higher in auxotrophic cultures, reflected by their higher cell proliferation inhibition and lower IC50 levels compared to heterotrophic ones. In the Cr(VI) treatments a redu…

Genotoxicity and oxidative stress in chromium-exposed tannery workers in North India.

Trivalent chromium (Cr) is an environmental contaminant, which is extensively used in tanning industries throughout the world and causes various forms of health hazards in tannery workers. Therefore, a cross-sectional study design was used to evaluate the DNA damage and oxidative stress condition in tannery workers exposed to Cr in North India. The study population comprised 100 male tanners in the exposed group and 100 healthy males (no history of Cr exposure) in the comparable control group. Baseline characteristics including age, smoking, alcohol consumption habits and duration of exposure …
