Impacts of climate change and variability on tropospheric ozone and its precursors.

Two coupled climate-chemistry model experiments for the period 1990-2030 were conducted: one with a fixed climate and the other with a varying climate forced by the is92a scenario. By comparing results from these experiments we have attempted to identify changes and variations in physical climate that may have important influences upon tropospheric chemical composition. Climate variables considered include: temperature, humidity, convective mass fluxes, precipitation, and the large-scale circulation. Increases in humidity, directly related to increases in temperature, exert a major influence o

Determinants of the incidence of hand, foot and mouth disease in China using geographically weighted regression models.

BACKGROUND: Over the past two decades, major epidemics of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) have occurred throughout most of the West-Pacific Region countries, causing thousands of deaths among children. However, few studies have examined potential determinants of the incidence of HFMD. METHODS: Reported HFMD cases from 2912 counties in China were obtained for May 2008. The monthly HFMD cumulative incidence was calculated for children aged 9 years and younger. Child population density (CPD) and six climate factors (average-temperature [AT], average-minimum-temperature [AT(min)], average-ma

Interplay between Safety Climate and Emotional Exhaustion: Effects on First Responders' Safety Behavior and Wellbeing Over Time.

Various job demands continuously threaten Emergency Medical Service (EMS) first responders' safety and wellbeing. Drawing on Job Demands-Resources Theory, the present study examines the effects of the organizational context-safety climate-and the psychological context-emotional exhaustion-on safety behaviors and wellbeing over time. We tested our hypotheses in a longitudinal study of 208 EMS first responders nested within 45 stations from three fire departments in US metropolitan areas over 6 months during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Multilevel modeling showed that the relationship

Scientific issues in the design of metrics for inclusion of oxides of nitrogen in global climate agreements.

The Kyoto Protocol seeks to limit emissions of various greenhouse gases but excludes short-lived species and their precursors even though they cause a significant climate forcing. We explore the difficulties that are faced when designing metrics to compare the climate impact of emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NO(x)) with other emissions. There are two dimensions to this difficulty. The first concerns the definition of a metric that satisfactorily accounts for its climate impact. NO(x) emissions increase tropospheric ozone, but this increase and the resulting climate forcing depend strongly on

The number of phosphorus loss events will increase with variability and seasonality in far future climate scenarios.

Climate change is likely to add further pressures to water quality degradation across the globe. The development of robust climate-smart mitigation measures necessitates understanding the impact of extreme hydrological events on catchment hydrology and nutrient losses. Here, empirical modelling (EM) was applied on 14 years of sub-hourly water quality and weather data from six hydrologically diverse agricultural catchments in Ireland to understand the climatic factors that trigger an increase in phosphorus (P) losses [manifested as increase of 0.01 mg L- 1 in total phosphorus (TP) and increase

Weathering the ride: Associations of heat, smoke, precipitation, and ozone with bus ridership in Colorado.

Weather and climate variability increasingly shape urban travel behavior, yet the short-term temporal dynamics and contextual modifiers of weather-transit relationships remain poorly understood. We analyzed system-wide hourly bus ridership in the Denver metropolitan area from June 2022 through September 2023 using fixed-effects negative binomial distributed lag nonlinear models with lags up to 24 h. Nonlinear exposure-response and lag-response functions were specified for hourly Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) and precipitation, with additional indicators for daily ozone exceedance and

Ecological niche modeling and distribution of Ornithodoros hermsi associated with tick-borne relapsing fever in western North America.

Tick-borne relapsing fever in western North America is a zoonosis caused by the spirochete bacterium, Borrelia hermsii, which is transmitted … ions of both the tick and spirochete align with known endemic foci for the disease. Further, global climate models predict a shift in the distribution of suitable habitat for the tick vector to higher elevations. Our predictions are useful for targeting surveillance efforts in areas of high risk in western North America, increasing the efficiency and accuracy of …

Bayesian variable selection in modelling geographical heterogeneity in malaria transmission from sparse data: an application to Nouna Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) data, Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: Quantification of malaria heterogeneity is very challenging, partly because of the underlying characteristics of mosquitoes and also because malaria is an environmentally driven disease. Furthermore, in order to assess the spatial and seasonal variability in malaria transmission, vector data need to be collected repeatedly over time (at fixed geographical locations). Measurements collected at locations close to each other and over time tend to be correlated because of common exposures such as environmental or climatic conditions. Non- spatial statistical methods, when applied to an

Talking About the Anti-Trans Sociopolitical Climate with Transgender and Gender Diverse Children and Their Caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) children and adolescents in the United States are currently experiencing an oppressive sociopolitical climate that is likely impacting their mental wellbeing. TGD children, defined as 5- to 10-year-olds, have the capacity to be aware of the anti-trans sociopolitical climate and, within the context of developmental readiness, TGD children and their caregivers may benefit from having conversations about the sociopolitical climate with a mental health provider. However, there are no clinical guidelines for how mental health providers may approach c

Climate change and malaria in west Africa: a review of strategies to handle one of the world's most prominent anthroponoses.

Climate change is intensifying the threat of malaria in Africa by altering the geographical range, seasonality, and transmission intensity of the disease. Rising temperatures promote mosquito breeding and parasite development, whereas extreme weather events, particularly flooding, disrupt control efforts and create breeding sites, enabling their spread into previously unaffected highland areas. These factors pose an evolving public health challenge. Malaria-control strategies, often designed for stable climatic conditions, risk being outpaced by rapid environmental changes. However, little is

Racing against change: understanding dispersal and persistence to improve species' conservation prospects.

Climate change is contributing to the widespread redistribution, and increasingly the loss, of species. Geographical range shifts among many species were detected rapidly after predictions of the potential importance of climate change were specified 35 years ago: species are shifting their ranges towards the poles and often to higher elevations in mountainous areas. Early tests of these predictions were largely qualitative, though extraordinarily rapid and broadly based, and statistical tests distinguishing between climate change and other global change drivers provided quantitative evidence t

Climate variability and dengue incidence in southern Ecuador: an ecological analysis in two contrasting climatic settings (2019-2024).

BACKGROUND: Dengue transmission is modulated by climatic conditions through their effects on vector ecology and viral dynamics; however, these relationships are context-dependent and operate across multiple temporal scales. Evidence from ecologically diverse regions remains limited, particularly in settings where contrasting climatic regimes coexist within the same geographic area. This study aimed to characterize interannual climate variability and to evaluate immediate and lagged associations between temperature, precipitation, and dengue incidence in two climatically distinct cantons of sou

Long-Term and Regional-Scale Data Reveal Divergent Trends of Different Climate Variables on Fish Body Size Over 75 Years.

Across many ecto- and endothermic organisms, climate change has induced a general shift towards smaller body sizes. Several existing hypotheses (e.g., Temperature Size Rule-TSR, metabolic theory) contribute to our understanding of climate-driven changes in body size. However, empirical support for climate-induced reductions in body size is mixed with some species growing larger under warmer temperatures, and underlying mechanisms are under debate. To address these inconsistencies, we used Bayesian hierarchical modeling to determine if mean length-at-age (proxy for growth) changed from 1945 to

Comparable Organic Aerosol Mass Enhancement during Photochemical and Dark Oxidation of Biomass Burning Emissions.

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formed from wildfire/biomass-burning emissions (BB) represents a significant fraction of global SOA production. However, there are large uncertainties in representing BB-SOA in climate models. We studied the evolution of organic aerosols (OA) from burning three biomass samples─savannah grass, savannah wood, and boreal forest surface─under different combustion conditions and during daytime (photochemical oxidation) and nighttime (dark oxidation) aging in an atmospheric chamber. OA dominated the BB emissions by contributing ∼82-99% of the total PM1 mass. Atmospher…

Effects of large-scale oceanic phenomena on non-cholera vibriosis incidence in the United States: implications for climate change.

Non-cholera Vibrio (NCV) species are important causes of disease. These pathogens are thermophilic and climate change could increase the risk of NCV infection. The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a 'natural experiment' that may presage ocean warming effects on disease incidence. In order to evaluate possible climatic contributions to observed increases in NCV infection, we obtained NCV case counts for the United States from publicly available surveillance data. Trends and impacts of large-scale oceanic phenomena, including ENSO, were evaluated using negative binomial and distributed non

Analysis and forecast of dengue incidence in urban Colombo, Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the dynamical behavior of dengue transmission is essential in designing control strategies. Mathematical models have become an important tool in describing the dynamics of a vector borne disease. Classical compartmental models are well-known method used to identify the dynamical behavior of spread of a vector borne disease. Due to use of fixed model parameters, the results of classical compartmental models do not match realistic nature. The aim of this study is to introduce time in varying model parameters, modify the classical compartmental model by improving its pre
