Postural control and vestibular and eye motor function were evaluated in 7 postlingually deaf patients before cochlear implantation as vibration toward the calf muscles or galvanic electrical stimulation of the vestibular nerves perturbed stance. The patients were compared with 21 control subjects. Vibration-induced bodysway was increased in the patients compared to the normals. Galvanic stimulation induced a bodysway that was not significantly different from that of the control group suggesting that the patients selected for cochlear implantation, and with otherwise reduced postural control, …

PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective study is to compare the results of electrically evoked compound action potential (ECAP) measurements using automatic auditory response telemetry (AutoART) with those obtained by ART in adults. The study also aimed to evaluate the predictive value of intraoperative ART and AutoART ECAPs for speech intelligibility (SI) and hearing success (HS), and to determine if cochlear nerve (CN) cross-sectional area (CSA) obtained preoperatively by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans could predict ART and AutoART ECAPs and SI and HS outcome.
METHODS: The study

Channel interaction from a broad spread of excitation is likely to be a limiting factor in performance by cochlear implant users. Although partial tripolar stimulation has been shown to reduce spread of excitation, the magnitude of the reduction is highly variable across subjects. Because the reduction in spread of excitation is typically only measured at one electrode for a given subject, the degree of variability across cochlear locations is unknown. The first goal of the present study was to determine if the reduction in spread of excitation observed from partial tripolar current focusing s

BACKGROUND: Electrode impedance (EI) monitoring is vital for understanding electrode-tissue interface dynamics and ensuring consistent neural stimulation in cochlear implant (CI) recipients.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study examined long-term EI patterns in 79 CI recipients (136 implanted ears) over a 5-year period. Impedance measurements were obtained intraoperatively and at 1 and 5 years post-implantation across 12 electrodes, categorized into apical (electrodes 1-4), middle (5-8), and basal (9-12) regions.
RESULTS: The apical region showed stable impedance throughout the 5-year an

Background/Objectives: Approximately half of US children who meet traditional cochlear implant (CI) candidacy criteria receive an implant. As candidacy expands to include a broader range of hearing configurations, identifying factors that influence referral completion and CI uptake is increasingly important. This study examined the predictors of CI evaluation completion and surgery among children referred for CI assessment, including both traditional and non-traditional candidates. Methods: The medical records of pediatric patients referred for an initial CI evaluation from 2018 through 2024 w

Cochlear nerve deficiency(CND) is a rare inner ear malformation characterized by a hypoplastic or absent cochlear nerve, resulting in variable hearing loss or total deafness, depending on the quantity of nerve fibers present. About 18% of congenital hearing loss are associated with CND. It is a disease of uncertain cause. The outcome of auditory implant in CND patients varies widely. This article will discuss the related issues of CND.

The amount of time that a person with a cochlear implant experiences severe-to-profound hearing loss before implantation is thought to impact the underlying neural survival, health, and function of the auditory system, thus likely being closely related to post-implantation performance in auditory tasks. The reporting of this number in the research literature is ubiquitous. Although it is most commonly called "duration of deafness," our point of view is that the term is imprecise and the calculation of this number can be nontrivial, particularly for cases of adult onset of hearing loss. We prov

Cochlear implants are the most successful neural prostheses used to restore hearing in severe-to-profound hearing-impaired individuals. The field of cochlear implant coding investigates interdisciplinary approaches to translate acoustic signals into electrical pulses transmitted at the electrode-neuron interface, ranging from signal preprocessing algorithms, enhancement, and feature extraction methodologies to electric signal generation. In the last five decades, numerous coding strategies have been proposed clinically and experimentally. Initially developed to restore speech perception, incre

PURPOSE: Deaf children with cochlear implants (CIs) experience challenges in early development of hearing and language skills that may place them at risk for externalizing behavior problems, such as aggression, hyperactivity-impulsivity, and oppositional behavior. This study is a longitudinal investigation of (a) between-groups differences in externalizing behavior problems between preschool-aged children with CIs and normal-hearing (NH) peers, and (b) within-group factors that may explain variability in externalizing problems within the sample of CI users.
METHOD: Parents of 26 children with

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Ichthyosis refers to a group of genetic disorders characterized by extensive scaling of the skin. Syndromic ichthyosis, such as KID syndrome, is associated with mutations in connexin 26, resulting in a triad of keratosis, ichthyosis, and deafness. Cochlear implant (CI) is considered an effective rehabilitation option for severe hearing loss in these patients, though challenges related to skin complications may arise. This study aims to systematically review the existing literature to evaluate the effectiveness of CI in patients with ichthyosis, focusing on auditory and c

Children with cochlear implants (CI) communicate in noisy environments, such as in classrooms, where multiple talkers and reverberation are present. Speakers compensate for noise via the 'Lombard effect'. The present study examined the Lombard effect on the intensity and duration of stressed vowels in the speech of children with Cochlear Implants (CIs) as compared to children with Normal Hearing (NH), focusing on the effects of speech-shaped noise (SSN) and speech-shaped noise with reverberation (SSN+Reverberation). The sample consisted of 7 children with CIs and 7 children with NH, aged 7-12
