[Vascular brain damage: an important and recognizable cause of cognitive and behavioral disorders].

Four patients presented symptoms of a dementia syndrome. A man aged 67 showed gradual aggravation of disorders of memory and gait, as well as subcortical infarctions. A man aged 65 had disorders of concentration non compatible with the infarctions on the MRI scan, which disappeared after discontinuation of use of flunarizine. A woman aged 55 and a man aged 52 had changes of character and infarctions in the frontal lobe. Vascular dementia is, contrary to what most criteria suggest, often a subcortical syndrome. The relationship between cerebrovascular pathology on CT and MRI scans and cognitive

Comorbid panic disorder and major depression: implications for cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Panic disorder and major depression frequently coexist, yet the implications of comorbidity for psychological treatments have rarely been studied. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether pretreatment comorbidity of major depression affects the outcome of cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) of panic disorder. Thirty-seven clients who met diagnostic criteria for both panic and major depression participated in 10 sessions of individual CBT for panic. Treatment outcome was contrasted with the outcome of 53 clients having only panic disorder who received the same treatment. The co-occu

Rate of improvement during cognitive-behavioral group treatment for panic disorder.

This study examined the rate of symptom improvement in patients receiving cognitive-behavioral group treatment for panic disorder in an outpatient clinic setting. Treatment was a standard program of 12 sessions that emphasized information, interoceptive and situational exposure, and cognitive restructuring, but also included diaphragmatic breathing and relaxation training as elements of treatment. Subjects were 37 patients selected from sequential admissions into an outpatient treatment program; all data were derived from ongoing quality assurance measures that are a standard part of clinical

Determinants of cognitive disorders in Autosomal Dominant Cerebellar Ataxia type 1.

We assessed neuropsychological performances of 22 patients affected by Autosomal Dominant Cerebellar Ataxia type 1. All subjects completed a comprehensive battery of standardized tests requiring a verbal response, without time constraints. In order to verify the hypothesis that disease severity is the major factor in determining the cognitive status in this syndrome, patients were divided into three groups according to the severity of the clinical picture, as evaluated by the Inherited Ataxias Progression Scale (IAPS). Statistical analysis of the three groups' raw scores showed a significant d

Cerebellar hypoplasia and frontal lobe cognitive deficits in disorders of early childhood.

A developmental chronometry hypothesis of early brain damage is suggested in which regions of the brain with a protracted course of postnatal development will be more vulnerable than earlier maturing areas to deleterious effects of early insult and, therefore, may become common sites of abnormality across many disorders originating in early childhood. Initial investigations of the cerebellum and frontal lobes are presented using MRI and neuropsychological measures. Planimetric measures of the cerebellar vermis (lobuli I-V and VI-VII) and pons, and neuropsychological frontal lobe measures were

ICD-10 mild cognitive disorder: epidemiological evidence on its validity.

Criteria for the diagnosis of ICD-10 Mild Cognitive Disorder (MCD) were applied to a sample of 897 community dwelling elderly participants. Criterion A (the presence of a physical disorder) was met by 44%, Criterion B (report of a cognitive disorder) by 17%, Criterion C (an abnormality in quantified cognitive assessments) by 60%, and Criterion D (exclusion on basis of dementia and other conditions) by 74%. A total of 36 cases (4%) met all four criteria. Correlations between Criteria A and B, and B and C were weak (r = 0.18), and the correlation between Criteria A and C was almost zero (r = 0.0

Cognitive-behavioral treatment for panic disorder with gastrointestinal symptoms: a case study.

A 25-year-old woman with a 12-year history of panic disorder with agoraphobia and gastrointestinal symptoms was treated using a cognitive-behavioral program which included: (a) correcting misconceptions about normal bowel functioning, (b) graduated in vivo exposure to internal stimuli which she misinterpreted as precursors of loss of bowel control, (c) graduated in vivo exposure to external stimuli associated with fears of loss of bowel control, (d) establishment of regular eating patterns, and (e) bowel control training. Self-ratings of avoidance and distress, frequency of panic attacks, diaz

Effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapies Targeting Cognitive Biases and Beliefs in Schizophrenia-Spectrum Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Cognitive models of schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (SSD) posit dysfunctional beliefs and cognitive biases as maintenance mechanisms of positive and negative symptoms. Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) targets these processes, its effects on mechanism-level outcomes remain unclear. This review examined whether CBT modifies dysfunctional beliefs and cognitive biases in SSD using rigorous randomized evidence. STUDY DESIGN: PRISMA 2020-compliant systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO registered). Primary analyses were restricted to intention-to-treat

Social cognition in women with borderline personality disorder based on an exhaustive analysis of the Movie for Assessment of Social Cognition (MASC) categories.

A significant number of borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms are manifested in the interpersonal context. This can be explained by the difficulties in attributing the mental states of oneself and others, which constitutes social cognition. Errors in social cognition are interrelated with the affective, cognitive, impulsive, and interpersonal areas of the person with BPD. The aims of this study was to analyze social cognition in women with BPD compared with a control group and to analyze social cognition in BPD based on BPD symptoms and its severity. To assess social cognition, we use

An Integrated Therapeutic Application Using Elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy in Treatment of Panic Disorder.

The commonly used protocol for the treatment of panic disorder has been the application of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). With the advent of third-wave psychotherapies such as acceptance and commitment therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), which focuses on experiential acceptance, there have been variations in the treatment of panic disorder. However, no case report has adopted an integrated treatment protocol using elements of CBT and MBCT. Here, we have presented a practical psychotherapy report of a 31-year-old woman who was treated ov

A multi-site randomized controlled trial of a cognitive skills programme for male mentally disordered offenders: social-cognitive outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive skills programmes have been associated with improvements on psychometric measures and reductions in antisocial behaviour in mentally disordered offenders (MDOs). However, to date there have been no randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of such programmes with this population. In the first RCT of a cognitive skills programme with MDOs we aimed to determine if participation in the Reasoning and Rehabilitation (R&R) programme was associated with improvements in social-cognitive skills and thinking styles. METHOD: A total of 84 men with a primary diagnosis of psychotic disorde

Comparative Clinical and Cognitive Outcomes of rTMS and Vortioxetine in Major Depressive Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive dysfunction is a core feature of major depressive disorder (MDD). Although both repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and vortioxetine have demonstrated procognitive effects, direct comparative evidence remains limited. This study compared the clinical and cognitive outcomes of rTMS and vortioxetine in patients with MDD. METHODS: In this 8-week naturalistic study, 40 patients with MDD received either rTMS (n = 25) or vortioxetine (n = 15). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS). Cognitive performance was

Cognitive and transcriptomic effects of Epigallocatechin gallate in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Prenatal alcohol exposure impacts fetal development, leading to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) characterized by cognitive, behavioral, and physical impairments. This pre-post, open-label, non-randomized pilot study explores Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate (EGCG), a potent antioxidant and neuronal plasticity modulator, as a therapeutic intervention for FASD improvement. In a 12-month pilot study, patients with 40 FASD (mean age 10 ± 3 years) received 9 mg/kg/day of EGCG, with outcomes assessed through RNA sequencing and neurocognitive evaluations (WISC-IV, CBCL 6-18, and NEPSY-II). Guidelines for visual cognitive rehabilitation of visual information processing disorders (2025).

Visual information processing (VIP) is essential for perception and cognition. It enables the brain to acquire and integrate visual stimuli into coherent representations. Visual information processing disorder (VIPD) is characterized by impairments in visuospatial ability, visual analysis, and visuomotor integration. These deficits significantly affect daily activities, learning, and occupational performance. The etiology of these disorders is multifaceted, including developmental anomalies, traumatic brain injuries, ocular diseases, and surgical interventions. This condition involves multiple

Timing of childhood adversity and cognitive profiles in adults with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: This study examined whether the timing of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) is associated with differences in intellectual ability in adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) without intellectual disability. METHODS: A total of 161 adults with ASD were categorized into three groups based on ACE onset: no ACEs (Group 0), early childhood ACEs (≤ 10 years; Group 1), and adolescent ACEs (11-18 years; Group 2). Intellectual ability was assessed using the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV). RESULTS: Findings revealed that Group 1 outperformed Group 2 on the

Attentional bias abnormalities and their association with cognitive load in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Attentional bias is a significant factor in the onset and persistence of obsessive-compulsive symptoms in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, the determinants of attentional bias in OCD remain inadequately understood. Research has indicated that certain goal-directed cognitive control factors, particularly working memory, affect the modulation of attentional bias. This study aimed to explore the relationship between cognitive load and attentional bias in OCD. METHOD: A total of 58 OCD patients (age: 31.34 ± 7.77, male:22, female: 36) and 59 healthy contr
